This was the very first Apple game I ever played, in our school's library in the early 80's. Played it on an Apple II+, not even a IIe. How bout that?
Huh. You got to play games at the library? They had an Apple II at my local library years ago, but they'd kick you off if they found you playing games on it. Doesn't mean lots of people didn't play games on it though. :)
OMG... this game brings back MEMORIES, hahahah!! Of both frustration and triumph, hahahah... as a kid, I sweat some BULLETS when those bloody jets came in... and although I remember surviving like 3 rounds of those things... I never could manage much of a true "score", lol.
But overall... the best part? When you shot off a parachute, and THAT poor bastard landed on ANOTHER bastard that had already landed. :) God. I ~loved~ that, hahahah
god i spent HOURS on this game as a kid!! I bought a 'new' apple ][e and adt card and adt program (and roms of course) to relive this and all the other great games. CLASSIC!
I didn't cut anything out. That's how the game ended. Besides the "sabotage" scenario, the game also ends if you get hit by a bomb, which is what happened here.
That's a "feature" of the game. The reason you can do that is you can't shoot the sabotuers once they're on the ground. When you get 4 of them on a side, they can attack the turret. The only way to kill them is to shoot out the parachute of a guy in the air so he falls on someone on the ground--SPLAT!
Good question. What I remember is sometimes I preferred stearable shells, other times I didn't. I think it does make it easier because you can put up "walls of lead" and direct them at groups of targets, rather than having to pick out each one. Personally I think it gives you a lower score, but I could be wrong. It encourages you to waste bullets, and that costs you points, but then you might be able to make more kills. I never kept score though. It was fun just to keep going until you died.
Always steerable shells. The game doesn't feel right without them.
Also, it makes hooking a shot around to hit the troopers' parachutes (which I always thought were their heads when I was little) is particularly useful.
Awesome game! Still have this one.
Nice job with the jets!LOL!

WOW! Forgot all about this game. I used to sign up to use the computer at the public library just so I could play this for 15 minutes.

The guys at Somethingawful forums are making a remake of this:

It's a pity - it seems to have stalled.

Yeah I was never a great scorer. I didn't keep track. I just kept going until I died.

And you can play it on most any old iPod, though it doesn't really have the same feel.

I remember this game. Never cared that I scored 0. I just tried to survive.

haha same here, who cares what the score was, as long as 4 guys didn't make it to one side!

Good game! You cut the best part. It's so hilarious when the guys pile up at the end to knock over your canon.

I loved the way the bodies splattered when they hit the ground after you shot away the parachute.

I remember playing this game in the early 80's. Do you think the game was easier to play with or without steerable shells?
