  • $500,000 in studio damage. Legendary.

  • I love this story so much.

  • it was 1980.

  • If you remove all the "fuckin" from his speech this becomes a 140-character Tweet.

  • who's bob wire?

  • Soooo.... Where's the video from the set? I could give a f*ck about some teeny bopper bullshit, where's the clip?

  • @yumaoldschool videosift . com/video/FEAR-Saturday-Night-Live-1981-Historic-Performance

  • Who the hell is this guy?

  • @LAGDB01 really? you have to ask who John Joseph is? fucking Cro-Mags you silly twat..

  • @johndillinger1932 sorry bro, i am new at this.

  • This is total bullshit. If they really fucked up the dressing room, like he SAYS they did, Fear wouldn't have played.

  • This is total bullshit. If they really fucked up the dressing room, like he SAYS they did, Fear wouldn't have played. They would have called the cops and stop the show, with no musical guest. What a crock!

  • @evelsteev That's the fans doing, not FEAR. Very presumptuous of you.

  • @ChuckMcChip not really, I was at the punk shows myself, in the 80's. I was THERE!

  • @evelsteev Congratulations, , but were you there for That particular show? If not, how would you even know the truth? Like I said, very presumptuous of you.

  • @ChuckMcChip that's like saying: "it's presumptuous of you to think that saying "nigger!" in a black church isn't going to piss anyone off." It's called reality.

  • @evelsteev So how do you explain people going apeshit at the show, causing damage to the set and yet FEAR kept playing?

If anything, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna take the word of a New York HC legend over some guy on youtube trying to convince me that HE knows the truth and not John, just because "he was there."

  • @ChuckMcChip yeah, it's not like they're lying or anything. Which was my point in the first place. LOL

  • @evelsteev And it's my point to say that I'm gonna take the word of someone who's done something with their lives over a 40 something youtube flamer. "LOL"

  • @ChuckMcChip nevermind. Let me know when your logic improves.

  • @evelsteev Just let me know when the more mature one here isn't the 19 year old. Get a life, dude.

  • @ChuckMcChip having a life isn't the issue. You assume because he "did stuff" (the life of a criminal is "doing stuff, LOL!) that he's more credible. Wow, you should get out more often, since that logic is embarrassingly shitty. Famous have been known to brag and exaggerate facts, time and time again, or did you not know this? Talk about naive. I was there, you weren't. Case closed. Have a nice day :)

  • @evelsteev Wow, you're really stretching out this issue beyond what I could care to respond to. Like I said, get a life, and no, having a life is not getting insecure over people calling you out for being a 40-year old nothing and using your right hand as a stress reliever every night because no one else will.

"Have a nice day :)" lol, what are you, a high school cheerleader? Pathetic. Predictable from a flamer, but nevertheless pathetic.

  • @ChuckMcChip then why do you keep responding? You responded to my comment first. You're the one who had ot be a smart-ass and try to "one up" me. It's sad, dude.

Do us both a favor, and stop trying to "one up" who have been around longer, and have lived a life. You weren't there,so quit pretending that you're were. Yeah, "have a nice day" is more polite and mature than saying "using your right hand as a stess reliever" Maybe says more about YOU, than anything.

  • @evelsteev You can't help responding either, dumb shit, so that makes two of us. And if you had a life you clearly do not now as you are hilariously waiting for my every response since everything else in life has passed you by....When the fuck did I say "I was there?" Take your pills, grandpa.

Lucky for you, a 19 year old can show more maturity than you possibly could and end the conversation now. And I know, honesty hurts, so I can see why you're so offended by the "right hand" remark. ;)

  • Comment removed

  • It makes ONE of us. You responded to ME. Why don't you just admit that you did, instead of trying to be so tough behind a computer? You're obviously hurt by the truth. Thats your problem, not mine. I'm hardly a grandpa. I'm the same age as John Joseph. You're not showing ANY maturity with those childish comments you just made. YOU'RE the one who came up with the masturbation remark. Your sex life is irrelevant to what I was saying, but they have forums for that kind of thing. You should go there.

  • @evelsteev (Laughs as your insecurity gets the best of you and forces you to respond to me)

Haha, you deleted your prior comment and revised it in order to up the insult factor. Cute.

    Good night, Gramps :)

  • Comment removed

  • Am I supposed to cry at these comments? Because if I am, wow, you need to grow up, man, it's sad.

I deleted my comment because of bad grammar. But if you want to put in your insecurities in it, go ahead.

If someone thinks that "gramps" applies to 40 yo's exclusively, then do us a favor and videotape yourself telling John Joseph, to his face, that he's a "grandpa." I dare you. Otherwise, just shut up, kid, and go back to the mall. LOL!

  • I got to see this moment briefly on youtube before it got pulled, I forget the power of "google" but classic footage. I loved it, Youtube sucks, thanks to those who posted a link though. Does anyone know if it's available on vhs, dvd, 8 track?

  • thats was definetly the best footage ive ever seen ever was that snl fear show soooo CRAZY!!!! COMPLETE BONKERS IT WAS BRILLIANTS!

  • I like the part where he says 'fuckin'

  • Is the video available on Youtube? I've only seen quick clips on VH1 throughout the years.

  • The difference is that in L.A. the hardcore punks would have rushed the police. Not joking either.

  • Lorne Michaels was NOT the producer at that time. It was Dick Ebersol.

  • Well spoken, sir.

  • Just google Fear on Saturday Night Live. There is video. it won't let me post the link here though.

  • I would love tosses the actual clip of Fear at snl

  • you know...fuckin...slamdancin...fuckin...you know...

  • @buchenschwartz yeah interesting since slam dancing was created in L.A./HB strut

  • And this has to do with what about John Belushi being a punk rocker? (Other than it was because of him that Fear was on the show) Belushi isn't mentioned once.

  • @seattlealex John Belushi is the one who called up Ian MacKaye and had him get people to the show to dance. It doesn't explain it in this interview though.

  • God what an asswipe that never grew up

  • Anyone have a clip of this magic moment?

  • What a douche. Like everyone with him, he had no regard for the the audience members that were there to enjoy the show. I bet they had a great time but what does he care, he's...wait, that right he's no one. Just some uneducated loser with a "cult following."

Influential? yeah, on an entire generation of shitheads and "gangstas"

  • Cool vid.

  • i wanna see that episode

  • He doesn't seem like a very nice man

  • What's the song at the beginning of the video.

  • @tmarkeymark cro-mags - hard times (demo)

  • @tmarkeymark - CRO-MAGS 'Hard Times'

  • Punk nostalgia and macho one up manship. Just like listening to hippies bore us with tales of Woodstock.

  • @bzzzzap at least the punks were not sitting down in yoga position smoking joints when they are watching a band like those hippie stinkers !

  • "fuckin' fuckin' fuckin' fuckin' fuckin"

  • @mrceebees14 and we were like, you know, fucking shit, like, and we're fuckin like:" fuck you" at the fuckin guy you know

  • Nest to that stunt that Elvis Castello pulled.

The FEAR episode was the shit!

  • I tried to upload the performance but Youtube was blocking it.

But everyone can still watch it with a little help from Google...

  • google "Fear on SNL and Ian MacKaye", first link. at the very end u can see the dude holding the pumpkin

  • no,man this story is true..i saw this show on NBC the night it came out..They did take over the cameras.. the old footage of this on the Broadway video "best of SNL" WOULD NOT show how bad the studio hacks lost control of the situation.. Best punk t.v. moment ever.. F.U. QUINCY {the tv episode} .. and ,of course--G.G. forever

  • Comment removed

  • John Belushi gets 1000 "I fucked society" points for doing this.

  • True story! I just watched it, my pal sent it to me since Derf Scratch died a couple weeks ago. Last thing you see is a dude on stage with a huge ass pumpkin!

    punks are pussies

  • @SidGrey youre a fucking idiot

  • @SidGrey John Joseph is straight edge. no drugs. just old school LES style.

  • @sccrashx7 that's not that cool dude. Straight edge?? Wow, so in your face! :P

  • Ok, now I DO believe in reincarnation.

Sounds like Sid Vicious was reborn into John Joseph !

Mindlessly smashing and destroying things for no apparent reason.....exactly what the media have always portrayed punk as.......hence the Quincy episode !!!!!

  • REAL MATURE

  • What i posted below ("Fear was banned..." ) is from Zimbio

  • * Fear was banned from playing again after the 1981 Halloween episode. With Donald Pleasence as host, the band played that night by request from Fear fan John Belushi, and they proceeded to play offensive songs/ and bus in "dancers". The situation was out of control to the extent that the damage of studio equipment forced Dave Wilson to end the three-song performance

  • @johnmcgowanable from zimbio

  • Bullshit. Lee Ving told me at a Fear gig last summer there was no damage at all. They were just pissed because some soundman had to spend his break fixing a broken cable.

  • Comment removed

  • @harpo10 @ harpo10. Click the link at the bottom. Go to NY Post Headline archives for Nov 1981! The NY POST FRONT PAGE Headline said $250,000.00 in damage was done. Also my ass was there personally. EYE WITNESS HOMIE! Lee Ving told you that

  • @harpo10 well it wont let me post the link. But its on zimbio under SNL bannings

  • @johnmcgowanable Thanks. Ill check it out. Was just trying to shed light on this. Wasn't trollin.

  • I really wish I could see that on the show in its entirety. It would have been epic.

  • Just for the record--Lorne Michaels was NOT the producer of SNL when Fear performed--it was Dick Ebersol.

  • you know, ive been looking for the footage myself lately. it USED to be available on youtube. seems to be missing.

I am going to guess Lee pulled another hissy fit and had it removed

  • @dasgreco : Check videosift website for the footage.. i found it there but for some reason can't copy/paste the link

  • Does anyone have the footage of that SNL moment? :S I really fucking want to see that shit

  • butlpkRwHDQ

  • maaaan his imitation of ian mccaye is great! holy shit....

  • "fuck new york! new york sucks!" -Ian McKaye

  • @jrhcp31 your mother sucks you faggo

  • um, i was quoting someone you fucking idiot. do you not understand puncuation?

  • thats what the fuck its all about

  • Good Interview. Fear was awesome on SNL.

  • FEAR FTW!!

    AMAZING PUNK RIGHT THERE!

  • Worst Halloween of my life until I came home and turned on the TV to hear Pleasants say..."Ladies and gentlemen...FEAR!" then watching the chaos "live" and shi#ing my pants with excitement.

  • does anyone have footage?

  • someone please upload the footage!

  • This monologue by Joseph is a damn blast! @tristanauspride Check out PopEater today, 04-24-10 "Worst SNL Performances." It has the entire performance on video, uncut, till the commercial anyway. 4:39 of mad brilliance. You can see Belushi in the shadows, I believe. PoEater: "For fans of punk, this is one of the best shows ever. For everyone else, though, not so much." Is that so, well then check out 'Decline of Western Civilization' "Eat my fuck, asshole!" "What does eat my fuck mean? Fuck you!"

  • @thewaymouth YEAH! That was the shit! Thanks for posting that!

  • @tristanauspride. If you google "Fear's performance of Saturday night live" it will be the first link.

    .wideo.fr/video/iLyROoafvXes.html

  • @whrgremp yeah!

  • @tristanauspride You can probably find it online somewhere. YouTube deletes it anytime its posted.

  • @tristanauspride there's footage of 'new york's alright' and part of 'let's have a war' but it's been taken off youtube for some odd reason, i'll double check and if there isn't any i'll put the shit up for everybody's viewing pleasure.

  • @tristanauspride I actually saw this it on tv when I was a kid (it was a re-run, not the actual 1981 live version) and it was one of the first times I knew I was going to love punk rock for the rest of my life. I wish there was easily accessable footage, because I would love to see it again.

  • @tristanauspride i was only able to find it on some russian version of youtube in shitty quality

  • I remember this show. Donald Pleasants (Dr. Loomis) from the movie Halloween was the host.

  • long live the dirty punks!!!

  • "you mother fuckers are gonna die" hahahahah too funny, seeing cro mags tonight

  • *High Five*

  • Spot on Bitch!

  • wow this young chap tells a very articulate story

  • what a dumb reason to riot

  • dumb reason to riot? No such thing.

  • Excellent storyteller.

  • What a turd.

  • I have that show on VHS, it cuts of right when that dude comes out with the jack-o-lantern. The whole front stage was just nuts with punks and skins(real skins, not that shit the media brainwashed everyone to think of) all over the place! Bloody fantastic!

  • i cant find it here! you got the link or if not put it up somehow?

  • Go to videosift . com and type FEAR-Saturday-Night-Live-1981-Historic-Performance. You'll find it there.

  • upload it! :D

  • yeah man if you have the means at all please upload it, it would be fuckin epic to see it.

  • lmao i wish i was there so bad i would be so pumped

  • Belushi filled in on drums with the dead boys when their drummer got stabbed. He was a party animal who liked the gritty life. He was a punk!

  • belushi was studying punks to write skits about them... he wasnt a punk but he did run with them and they watch him die... they said to them ' i dont care about you ... fuck you... new yorks ok if you like saxaphones'

  • uh huh. first hand info from a teenager who heard about it 30 years after it happened.

    please, enlighten us some more...

  • I am 45 years old and was old enough to have had the priviledge to see these things play out in the Mass Media and in various social circles

Long story short... Belushi thought he could top Radner's Candy Slice and then smooze a hard nose kid from Philly to do his new sound track for the movie Neighbors only to find out that they were more down with filming Suburbia and watching Belushi 'live & die in LA' while they just stood their lookin at him singin 'I Dont Care About You'...Fuck You'

  • CRO-MAGS

    SKINHEADS

    BREAK OUT

  • this guys not from jeuzey.

  • He's from QUEENS!!!

  • where can i find the video of it?

  • only episode of SNL that was never aired

  • it was aired and I have the footage

  • Comment removed

  • post it i wanna see it so bad my dad keeps talking about it

  • i tried to but NBC Universal banned my video

  • that episode is out there. You just have to look for it. The part where Ian yells "New York Sucks" is very, very audible. If you find the video, it's before Lee Ving starts into "Let's Start A War". There's about 2 seconds where he stops.

The "Fuck New York" part can be heard, but unless you know what you're listening for, you might not be able to understand it. It's after New York's Alright..., but before Let's Start A War.

  • All I gotta say is John Belushi bashing that hippies guitar against the wall in

animal house was fucking punk rock.

  • Is there footage of Fear on SNL?

  • I've seen very brief footage of it on tv like on vh1/mtv as part of a punk documentary or something. Like a kid flying through the air above the most pit and that's it. I've tried looking on youtube and I can't find anything. what a shame!

  • you won't find it on youtube. Keep googling SNL Fear 1981 and you'll find it.

  • Well since I am the one in the video I guess the chick calling it fiction, is claiming i made it up... it was such a minor event it made the headline story of the NEW YORK POST the next day because we caused over $250,000.00 worth of damage. Check your sources sweety. I was there hung with Belushi backstage at SNL and was the one doing damge to the place. So EFF what you heard or read. JOHN JOSEPH

  • Comment removed

  • Why do none of the accounts of this event match up? I've read more than a few interviews that go into the 'Fear on SNL' event and they range from the SNL staff overreacting to a minor incident to this outrgageous version. Gotta be honest, this version of events sounds like complete hyperbole if not outright fiction.

  • Comment removed

  • dont under estimate the power of punk rockers

  • Personally i think the youth culture of today is pussified. We could use more kids smashing civic centers and shit. Fuck the corporate douche bags. If violence upsets you, go listen to fleetwood mac then, posers.
