  • Troy is masterful, but he sure aint no Cliff

  • Light up!

  • @cannibal72 I like the original version better ,but this a pretty good cover.

  • The bass Line is diffrent but still cool

  • Lars > Brann Muffin

  • the song starts sucking at 5:27

  • @tangleone Thats the Part The Song Is Named After..

  • Troy Sanders is a god.

  • @JonMan7794 dude dave has toured with other bands. just because he was not with slayer does not mean he stopped playing. Dave is a better drummer and has played a more aggresive style for years. I love Metallica and Ulrich when he was younger was a very very good drummer, but stop making excuses. Makes you look pathetic.

  • this is just OK...

  • Mastodon wouldn't of done this song if they didn't like or respect Metallica.

  • @MetalliKatman Bullshit. You don't have to respect a band to do a cover.

  • @bobokk Degenerate, I don't have any respect for 'ADTR' definitely wouldn't find me doing a cover, but I have respect for Sylosis, hence covering them. If you don't have a comment that poses any sort of truth or interest then shut the fuck up.

  • @UKRCyanide Welcome to the internet. I'll comment as much as I want. Just like you can upload as many videos of your shitty guitar playing.

  • @JonMan7794 Well you clearly don't know what ignorant means.

And last time I checked, metallica was also metal.

  • Respect to the old and the new. Both are great. enough said.

  • Great! Now I'd love to hear Metallica cover Mastodon....oh wait...they can't.

  • One hell of a cover. Holy shit. Thanks for postin. I know Brann wanted to go the fuck off like usual, but then it wouldn't be a cover anymore.

  • Great cover. Mastodon rocks.

  • its funny to hear an actual good drummer play this track

  • @swedishbutcher O.o As much as I love Metallica, I love a good Lara burn. Well done.

  • @swedishbutcher O.o As much as I love Metallica, I love a good Lara burn. Well done.

  • @swedishbutcher Lars was good when they recorded this. Just not now, apparently. C'mon, he did Dyers Eve.

  • @VideoMask93 Definitely, Lars used to be one of the most influent Heavy Metal Drummers. His double bass speed was insane! Later, Dave Lombardo appeared :P

  • @briands1993 Yeah. And Lars's skill deteriorated with age. Doesn't everyone's, in time...

  • metalodon ^o)

  • Horrible bass solo. He shouldve played the original solo.

  • @constantinople610 Actually, it sounded like they replaced the bass solo with a synthesizer solo... Either that or Troy should lay off the pitch shifting pedals ^^

  • @arhainofulthuan That can be right. On the search bar write " Orion-only bass". Watch me play orion.

  • R.I.P. Cliff Burton

  • I really like the drum sound on this version, but it's just a refelction of the change of times and styles. I love the Cliff Burton version on bass though. He was a bass player above all others in metal.

  • Behhh, not a bad cover, but I don't feel the same on the "relax" part, itsn't the same, it hasn't the spirit

  • @FoxWBogart I agree. This song is awesome all the way up to the slow(er) part, but I think they were lacking in the latter half: it lacked the soul that the original has. That being said, I am pretty stoked about "The Hunter."

  • OMG

  • sounds like mortal kombat

  • @bladecatcher01 You are right man, for a second I thought it was the Legend of Zelda theme too!, but they definitely ripped off Mortal Kombat

  • @TonyInTopeka too bad this song was written long years before mortal kombat was released.

  • @kj7409 wurd bruther...chances are mortal combat is based on this...lol

  • @TonyInTopeka too bad this song was written years before mortal kombat was released.

  • @TonyInTopeka idiot.

  • @LiamD613 U been trolled nigga!

  • I actually like this one!

  • nice try from mastodon...

I will say just one thing. In my country they used to reffer to Mastodon as the second Mettallica, with a totally positive meaning. Now they say nothing and the reason is simply. Mastodon whatever they wyll do, will simply remain what they are now, a good band. Notheing more, nothing less. They are overestimated and I hate this...

  • @Kororock dude, comparing anyone to metallica just isn't fair. and mastodon is such a different band. they make much different music, and as a whole they just totally different. i mean i respect your opinion, but no need to hate man

  • Brann must be so bored covering Lars Ulrich haha

  • @Yeahhhh444 I bet he was, I noticed Brann threw a couple of fills in that weren't in the original. lol

  • this cover is neato-burrito...

  • @VoLCoMzYaDiGG Yoooouu Ole Knuckleeeeaaaadd!

  • @TonyInTopeka thannnnnnnnnnks?

  • Mastodon has some amazing songs, oblivion, call of the mastodon, The Czar, aqua dementia, etc. But Metallica is just AMAZING!

  • @VoLCoMzYaDiGG Mastodon is way better than Shitallica

  • @QingLong90 You may be right actually.

  • @QingLong90 ...and I cleanse my eyes of reading what has been written against the holy word....Metallica!

  • @QingLong90 without metallica there'd be no mastodon

  • At both of you, when i play this live, I'm using a bass...with distortion pedal, bass chords, and some vibrato bending :X sounds exactly the same if i tap it right. so idk about album versions but im pretty sure he's doing the same as what he did for the anesthesia take.

  • 5:47 my fav part of orion. for me, the best song ever composed, my soul´s song.

    cliff rock in peace

  • How can i find this? I never found this on my copy of Blood Mt.

  • The beginning of Orion on MOP is played with a distorted organ and then played in reverse, Mastodon just uses a distorted bass guitar so it sounds different but still the same notes.

  • @kingv911 if im not wrong, the orion intro in mop its cliff´s heavy distorted bass.

never heard anything about an organ in orion, but the sound may be kinda like an organ.

  • @LOCOARTSak I think it may even say it in the MOP album's liner notes, but I have read in two different interviews from metallica members that it is a distorted Hammond organ, and I believe played in reverse.

  • @kingv911 well, i didnt know that.

i still think that its a bass

  • @kingv911 Cliff used a distorted bass with a wah and volume pedal to create the Orion intro.....

  • @BreadArePeople except the album version is an organ, distorted, and played in reverse.....

  • @kingv911 where in the fuck did u get that from wikipedia??? cause dude u r fucking wrong good job on being a dumbass ;)

  • @pgriff69 nope, interviews with kirk hammett. congrats on being a fucking douchebag.

  • @kingv911 u tell me the interview and if hes says a dstorted organ i will send u 500 bucks in the mail

  • @pgriff69 well you got me there as I don't have it, but I insist I did indeed read it in a couple different spots (before Wikipedia). Just know, the intro to Metallica's Orion is played on a distorted Hammond organ.

  • @kingv911 dude just watch cliff em all as i did like a thousand times and they show the recording process of orion and they show exactly what uses because that same intro is taken from the song anesthesia exact same equipment except in the intro for orion he uses wah wah to make sound like an organ. js thats all

  • @kingv911 It's a bass intro. Everybody knows it's a bass intro. I don't know where the hell you got that it's a Hammond organ, but it's a bass intro. Given the scarce amount of Cliff Burton's recorded work, people have identified and analyzed everything. This is, without a shadow of a doubt, a bass intro.

  • @Zuwayed everybody doesn't know for sure. I believe the official Master of Puppets guitar music book says the intro was played on a Hammond organ. Go to a music store and see for yourself.

  • @kingv911 I'm pretty sure its a bass intro with wah and distortion (as cliff often used)

  • @predben thats not a wah... i forgot the name of that effect but is not a wah...

  • @teogt23 I think it's a reverse effect with some slap back and octave

  • @teogt23 phaser?

  • @wzwilliam haa!! that one!! thnx!

  • omg no epic fail on the interlude the best part of the song.

  • mastodon. suddenly my new favourite band.

  • Brann > Lars

  • This sounds pretty good!

  • it sounds really natural for mastodon they didnt struggle to bring it to metallicas level because its already on there level (if that makes sence to anyone else but me)

  • the bass sounds fucking groovy to me , two of my favs getting ruined by dipshit fans = pathetic

  • just let metallica's songs alone. nothing matches the original. the original is always the best . Metallica rules !!

  • @geodivo Metallica covers the fuck out of songs so what it happens

  • The drums sound better I think. Brann Dailor is a tastier drummer than Lars. Nice cover. Crispy!

  • @loveisthelaw20042004

A lot of people are better then Lars

  • Bass solo weak, but nice cover.

  • I wish they had covered The Thing That Should Not Be instead :/

  • this is blasphemy! this is madness!

  • @LMTR14 THIS... IS.... AWESOME.

  • the bass tone could have been a bit better

  • I am seriously impressed by Mastodon on this one, I never thought they couldn't done this well.

  • they just left out some of the second guitarparts. but besides that they did great. I think the sound is awesome too

  • Original is better but good effort.

  • they need to crank up the bas a lil more... i mean the bass is the most important part of the song and i can barley hear it at the end. But other than that, it was a grood cover. Obviously didnt beat Metallica's, but still great. Especially loved the dropped tuning.

  • awesome

  • They did a good job!!!!!!! But you can't beat Metallica's version. And...Cliff Burton is just amazing when it comes to his bass solos.

  • Owning 'Tallica's entire Discography means you get a feel for how they play.

There is not a single song they have made that I can say I dont like.

And People who say St. Anger was shit, I recommend you listen again.

Frantic, Shoot Me Again and The Unamed Feeling are like dirty diamonds. Just becuase they dont look the same as real diamonds doesnt mean they're worth less.

Seen 'em Play O2 Arena London twice.

Best fucking Gigs I have ever seen!!! Next gig they play there I'm IN!!

  • Oh And Forgot :) Sick cover of Orion.

Mastadon have really done the song Justice. Fucking awsome guys.

  • Some if these comments just remind me of kids that ONLY listen to metallica.........some kids

  • manque de coeur

  • MASTODONS INSTRUMENTALS= WIN

  • metallica hands down...this doesnt have the same passion

  • this is just a sic cover. better recorded than the origonal and sadly better played than the origonal. the 2 solos are very different and mastadon nailed it solid to the fukin wall. you need to hear ths REALLY load to get it properly, your laptop speakers wont do this justice. the way that guitar sqeals down at 7.19 is just an outstanding adition to wat was already one of my fav tallica songs ever rock on!!!!!

  • @biggaz123321 Fucking right!! it is a good cover.

  • i love this cover, also the acoustic ONE from Rodrigo & Gabriela, but in my opinion nothing beats the original.

    R.I.P. CLIFF

  • pretty awesome

  • casi no se oye el bajo

  • This could have fit on blood mountain, especially the main riff.

  • Metallica is better than a lot of extraordinary bands.

    Mastodon rocks.

  • man this is great cover....but of course Metallica is better:) but i like it too

    the best part 1:29 - 1:59

  • Comment removed

  • They figured out the main covers suck. The Vocals. So they cover a song that have no lyrics. GENIUS

  • main reason (sorry)

  • Great cover... Just cant help imagining the train wreck it would be if Metallica tried to cover a Mastodon track....

  • Mastodon + Metallica = Metalgasm

    Neurosis kicks ass, too, dude.

  • Immensi.

  • this cover is fucking awesome!!!

    reminds me cliff :( R.I.P

  • Love Mastodon, find Metallica a bit naff though..don't know why, they just never really gelled with me.. i came to Mastodon through Neurosis, and before that prog rock prolly why..good cover though :P

  • Neurosis is intense :D

  • Mastodon ftw mother fuckers.

  • HOLY SHIT O_O I'm a huge MetallicA fan and recently I've been looking for new bands and this is my answer, MASTODON ROCK ON!

  • fuckin amazing!

Metallica has always made such classics and Mastodon really made a good cover :)

  • They really gave it the sound of a Mastodon but with the energy of a Metalica song....It's......It's like if God was in a band....It's beutiful!

  • this song is bitchin'

    love metallica/mastodon <3

    (no homo)

  • damn this cover is sick, especially the drums

  • Wow this is awesome!!! I love Metallica ( favorite band ) and Mastadon!

  • It's REALLY awsome, i agree with the others...

  • y a cheese lol, but i mean personally me when i look at a cover i think damn i wonder what they'll do to, and im a metalica fan as u can see. also a mastodon fan. and i no i shall piss many off by saying this . but i dont care. i like it better than the original

  • i agree

  • That..

    was FUCKING AWESOME!

    ESPECIALLY the END!!

  • If a cover is exactly the same as the original, then what's the point?

  • yes sir ! ^^

  • if you hate covers so much than why are you listening to this instead of the original?

i cover is meant to be different.

  • a cover is not supposed to be a fucking copy you dumb ass its supposed to be a fuckin TRIBUTE! by taking someone else's art and adding your personal touch... best of both worlds... don't be a stunned cunt

  • Good cover:)

  • yeah well they're hardly metallica right?? lol they did an awesome version anyway ...take it for wat it is dread ...

  • Mastodon is much better than Metallica. Just listen to "Crack the Skye"

  • honey, ur statement just shows ur ignorance...metallica is one of THE founding fathers of metal, im not denying that mastodon is an amazing band but they cant touch metallica with a ten foot pole....

  • Just listen to any of Metallica's albums

  • uhhhh Crack the Skye was not the best mastadon album i have heard. to be honest the best songs on the cd are Ovlivion and Divinations.

  • agreed... id have to say a tie for me between leviathan and remission for my personal faves

  • oblivion and divinations are very good but blood mountain and leviathan have their good and bad songs as well it's a hard choice to pick a favorite

  • I love mastodon but this is a big song to take on and they didn't do it justice.

  • shity cover i love mastodon but they sucked the life out of this

  • yea it doesn't even sound like them. especially the bass, it was sooo terrible.

  • I think troy was using the wrong kind of setting on the bass distortion thats why

  • no he's just not playing the right stuff. especially at the solo.

  • Guys, thats why it's a cover, not "the song"

    it's suppose to sound different.

So Mastodon did a cover of Orion with their own style of playing.

  • Finally someone speaks..Thank you :)

  • @daroodee

    amen.

  • @daroodee thank u somone who finally agrees with me on this whole oh they suck they made that sound different, the bass doesnt sound the same, the drums dont sound the same bullshit. couldnt have said it any better

  • @pyromanic920

Its because mastodon played this song in D standard as opposed to E standard, which metallica plays every song in. Thats why it may sound heavier or wierd to you. also, recording technologies have advanced in 25 years plus since the original, and mastodon uses different distortion effects. also, they played the solos differently. Thats why it is called a cover is not supposed to be note for note.

  • BOOBIES I LOVE BOOOOOBIES

  • Who doesn't. :P

  • if you ask me Mastodon could very well be one of the best metal bands if not the best of our time. They have the most technical guitar players ever. From a guitar players point of view some of the oddest and hard riffs ever. and an outstanding drummer that compares to no one. look up some of his shit on here...youll be amazed

  • they don't have the most technical guitar players ever.

there are a lot of guitar players who are better than them.

however the Mastodon guitar players are still very good.

  • I don't like the drumming on this. I think its insulting to a drummer of Brann's calibur to be forced to play a Lars Ulrich beat :p

  • It's still a lot better, but I wish he would have changed it more.

    What is this from, anyway?

  • Blood Mountain,(Bonus Track) but I heard on Kerrang! Remastered

  • Haha I agree! A bit too easy. Even I can play this on drums and I don't really even play drums, guitar way more.

  • it doesn't matter about the difficulty of the beat...it's whether its good or not, and quite frankly it sounds like a drum machine.

  • Best cover in the entire album!!! Mastodon rocks!!

  • mastodon is one of the only bands who has the potential to be where metallica is at....thats why im glad they are touring together in Europe

  • this is probably the only cover of any metallica song i like better then the original song

  • Mastodon is a thousand times better better than Metallica!! :P

    (Yeah,first comment)

  • well you're just wrong. and dumb at that.
