For the longest time I thought that my great-grandpa fought on the side of the Allies... until a couple of weeks ago I spoke with my grandfather, telling him that I watched "All Quiet on the Western Front" with my dad. I asked him, "What CEF battalion was your father in?" he laughed and said, "My grandfather was a German." I was very surprised.
@Litterboxer529 Doesn't matter what side he was on, war is war. I even saw a picture of a German soldier being helped by British soldiers, right after the armistice (cease fire). The point is, they are all people with the value of life.
I'm reading this book for school right now but I probably won't watch the movie. I'd rather picture it in my own color way than watch the black and white and get bored. Advantage of reading XD AWESOME book by the way.
In the 8th grade we were on the subject of WW1. My teacher Mr Drum told us the same thing: "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" \
He always overanalyzed on videos to point out propaganda. Now in the 10th grade that phrase still haunts me. Like I should fight for my country even if it's for a worthless cause.
I just got done reading the book. It was sad and I cried. Now I fear I will cry more with this! LOL God bless all those brave men who fought in World War I. And II, and every other major war.
I have analyzed the crap out of this movie as a film student, and one major topic that is brought up is that "Heaven can be the source of Hell". In other words, war films contain a Heaven (home) and Hell (war). In pro-war films, Heaven and Hell are very distinct, separate things with the main characters being motivated to protect or return to Heaven. However, in anti-war films Heaven can be the source of Hell as seen here in with the parade of soldiers marching outside the classroom windows.
Sadly, the poor often don't have the proper education to lead. What I mean is that there have to be those who make the decisions and those who execute them. Granted, those in charge in WWI were not always right, but at least they were following a logical plan. In any situation there has to be someone who gives commands and someone who executes them. And no, the poor can't lead themselves. The most they can do is riot, because even revolutions are led by those with education.
@AdoraBell 100% Disagree with you when you say poor people cannot lead themselves. Real leadership, the definition, has nothing to do money, although I must admit now days leadership in the world has everything to do with money. But your comment kind of makes me angry are you suggesting all poor people are too stupid too lead?
@dannyboy11490 No, I'm saying that proper military leadership takes education in order to be effective. Poor people don't have the resources to become properly educated in such things as tactics, strategy and, most important, logistics. Also, most poor people, in all times, have been labourers, not warriors, and so they wouldn't even have the experience of regular soldiers to add to leadership. If you can give me 10 examples of leaders who were poor, I may rethink my stance.
@AdoraBell AUDIE MURPHY,POOR son of croppers, dropped out in 5th to pick cotton! 1 of the most decorated soldiers of WWII, earned Medal of Honor for taking on a company after climbing onto a burning M10 Destroyer(after sending his men back 2 SAFETY) manning it's .50 till out of ammo while wounded, THEN began calling arty in until line was blown, gathered his remaining men and organized a c-attack driving Germans out of the area. Can't 'pick' leaders, they emerge, & his tactics were PERFECT!
@reeseman67 Audie Murphy isn't one of the most decorated soldiers (not counting marines because marines are marines and soldiers are army) in WW2 he is the most decorated Soldier in the U.S. Army history period.
@UchihaGamer111 I had originally said 'one of if not the most decorated', but had to take some out to fit. I know he is the most as we share a family name! Very proud of his accomplishment's in the 'Murphy name', but not at all trying to discount his efforts or success, just couldn't fit it in!lol. I think he's a GREAT example of leadership having NOTHING to do with financial status as Adora Bell says, must never have been in combat, it's the N.C.O.s that are the TYPICALLY the REAL leaders!
One of the things to remember is that almost no one expected a war of attrition. Conditioned by the Cabinet Wars of the 19th century everyone thought that WWI would be over by Christmas. An interesting view on this is presented by Volker Berghahn in his book Europe in the Era of 2 World Wars. He points out that a very small number of the German generals feared a long war and so tried to do everything to prevent it (long war, not war itself).
@joshua999111 In my opinion it should be in German with Emglish subtitles since Remarque was German and every character in it was German in the German army. It would give it more of a "authentic" feel I guess. But this still is good. :)
@mrorville1 I've read a theory that the war could have ended after a few months if England hadn't entered it. Such was the case in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, which lasted 10 months. Germany invaded and beat France, entered Paris, made surrender terms and returned home. If the British had stayed out of WW1, the end result could have been the same.
@Pbirv yes, but I along with many others believe that Britain saw Germany changing the balance of power in Europe and saw its militarization as a threat to its colonial rule through out the world. The British feeling that it was perhasps better to fight the Germans before their industrial capacity surpassed their own.
@brushcreek42 Yes perhaps you are right but you do speculate and I see your example of the Franco-Prussian war but then again France was a stronger country in 1914 than it had been in 1870 under Napoleon III (who only had his uncle's name and little else). Also the British did not have many divisions at the 1st battle of the Marne which almost won it for the Germans had it not been for an error in their formations which left a gap for the French to exploit.
@truvianni I am just repeating a historian's theory. Perhaps if Germany had not invaded Luxembourg and Belgium, England would have delayed getting into the war. They were bound by an 1839 treaty to protect the Belgians if they were invaded. However, England, France and Germany were armed to the teeth with their modern, motorized militaries and itching to put them to test in "a war to end all wars".
@brushcreek42 Well, the effectiveness and power of the treaty is put in question by Norman Davies. He states that the treaty was so old and non-binding that England could have stayed out if they wanted to. He also says the same thing about the Russians and their defence of Serbia.
@AdoraBell As I stated previously, England, France and Germany were armed to the teeth with their "modern" motorized armies and I think all were itching to put them to the test. The treaty with Belgium would have been a good excuse to go to war with Germany. To me, WWI has to be the stupidest, most senseless war in world history. Absolutely nothing was accomplished other than plant the seeds for Nazism and WWII.
@brushcreek42 I'm not gonna argue the usefulness of the war since I to think that it was pointless, but I will disagree with the idea of wanting to put weapons to the test. Those same weapons, except for gas, were used by the Europeans in the African colonies in the years preceding the Great War. I really do recommend reading Europe in the Era of the Two World Wars by Volker Berghahn. It's short and he has an interesting view on the causes for the wars and the violence that happened.
I recently just finished reading this book, I have to tell you, this is the best book I have ever read. This was the only book to make me cry like a child, and I encourage anyone who has not read the book to read it.
@deathmetalcoffee I guess I've read it 3 times in the past 50 years. I first read the Classics Comics version when I was a kid and was taken in by it. This was one of the books that Hitler and the Nazis burned in the 1930s when they came to power. Antiwar books were not their cup of tea. I believe it should by required reading for teenagers in school. But then the government might not like that.
@brushcreek42 I agree with you. The book completely changed my view on a soldiers life. Now that I am a freshmen in high school, I have to read books like "To kill a mocking bird" and "Flowers For algernon" and whenever I begin to read one of the books I usually become uninterested because it seams like nothing can compare to "All Quiet On The Western Front"
@deathmetalcoffee Another war book with a different outlook is "The Red Badge of Courage". If you read it, watch the movie made in about 1950 starring Audie Murphy, the most decorated US soldier in WW2. Above all, keep reading, researching and questioning all your life. You will have everything to gain and nothing to lose.
@deathmetalcoffee well Hitler did fight in WWI and even did so bravely. He won the Iron Cross 2nd and even 1st class. The 1st class being something most rare for a non-officer to be awarded.
@deathmetalcoffee so in all you say that Hitler knew what war was about as many times he saw whole regiments he was in killed and was even hit by mustard gass near war's end.
@deathmetalcoffee not really since many who were in WWI were also in WWII actually most of the generals like Patton,Rommel, were in both wars.As for Hitler though some may think he was a coward because he killed himself later on; he actually fought very bravely in WWI.His part being that of a running along the lines with messages.
@deathmetalcoffee Herr Schicklegruber had his hate long before "All Quiet" was ever written. There are just some people that no book, movie, or anything is gonna their minds about anything, and Hitler was one of them.
@pepi560 Well sometimes the rich also go many officers were rich. Of course more poor will always go since well basically there are always going to be more poor than rich in any country and at any time in history.
@AdoraBell ok, so you said sumone has to lead the poor people, or atleast thats what i understand. on which i reply saying poor people could lead themselves.
For the entirety of WW1 German forces held the superior ground in almost every battle. In the Somme they were on top of a hill, in Passchendaele they were on top of a ridge. Meanwhile the Allied forces had to dig in to the mud and wait it out.
@MrMrUSMC They were also outnumbered and for most of the war fighting on 2 fronts. Their resources were never enough to last throughout a war of attrition which is why the Shlieffen plan was all about surprise and speed.
@lololrofl50 It does, so do views about it. The war fought by the Spartans was different from WWI in every single way, except that people died in both. The reasons, the ideology, and the methodology are all specific to each war and to each time.
@AdoraBell actually, its a quote. and honestly it doesnt. people have always foughten for things such as land, power, money, religion, and simple greed. the only thing that has changed is the weapons we used
@lololrofl50 Overall, yes, but each time and place has its reason for going to war. Also, the way the war is perceived is different depending on the time and place. In each war it is the specifics that count. Throughout history people knew what they were getting into. It is only in WWI that the game changed. It's probably the first time that so many young people went out not knowing what was gonna happen.
Lew Ayres was nominated for Best Actor in 1948 for his role as the doctor in "Johnny Belinda." It was a great performance, but Olivier's "Hamlet" took the prize.
the German Army entered the war with by far the best equipment (especially heavy artillery and mortars) and the trend continued into the second world war... the 210mm or 5,9 was the best heavy weapon of the war... the 150mm and 105mm howitzers were also extremely useful. They did not rely on a mechanical recoil system, but used a modern gas system similar to that of the french 75mm field gun, possibly the most overrated weapon in the war. the german pioniere were also the best carrying mortars
my favorite scene in this movie is when Paul is trapped in the crater with the soldier he stabbed, dying from the wound he inflicted upon him. This movie is one of my favorites because its core message is that in war no one is right, no one is wrong, no one is unwounded, and no one is innocent
This is a good representation of what war was like in the trenches of WWI, and this makes it even better because Erich Maria Remarque was an actual soldier for Germany during the war and this is made better becaue he gave his enterpretation of what the war was like in his perspective in the trenches.
Herr Professor can blab this way because he knows he's too old to be called to arms. Anyway, the students in this classroor look a bit too old to be still studying Greek (look at the letters on the blackboard behind the teacher)
@chronitized well it's not chronological in the way it's explained in the book (all this stuff happened at various points when Bäumer brought it up) but it seems right for the most part
"In peace, sons bury their fathers; in war, fathers bury their sons" Herodotus
War is a quarrel between two thieves too cowardly to fight their own battle; therefore they take boys from one village and another village, stick them into uniforms, equip them with guns, and let them loose like wild beasts against each other.
@DengPride lol nice.im in 9th grade too. but i just like all quiet on the western front personally. don't bother try reading the book tho its really confusing.
Really timeless movie. This film and staligrad are my most favourite antiwar movies.i cried at the climax of stalingrad ,nice movie must watch if you are an antiwar movie lover
this film shows that how easily young minds can be manipulated by elder people,u have to just say that u r being attacked and they will follow to battle field ignorantly. Paul realises this in the course of time so do i.
ok i get it.The people who most suffered in war are the ladies.because the soldier is somebodie's son, brother or husband.you can insert this line "But Every bullet fired touches a women's heart" in the poem.
@moderate44 well historically ladies didn't fight the wars, and even today they fight only in small numbers. I'm not saying that's fair or the way it should be - I think women should be allowed to do what they wish - but you can't be surprised a common war poem assumes men are fighting. it's just a matter of understanding context, you know?
ok i get it.Men means both men and women here.Donot be gender biased.they do fight but not generally in front but in medical services, command and control, intelligence etc.Look men die in war but it is the women who suffers the most.He is somebodies son, brother, husband, father.so you can add this line to poem"But Every Bullet fired touches a women's heart".

@23nemi23: I'm not a big fan of any army but it's well and true that the Armed Forces NEVER start wars; their civilian leaders do the honours. Ironic, isn't it?
Soldiers are inherently anti-war and with good reason... They're the first to witness its wrath and all the rest.
@DNchap1417 But still we haven't learn anything from 3000 years of warfare, still we wage war for silly reason like world war 1 .Ego is behind all the trouble, for ego clash country goes to war, family separated.
i think war is here as long as men exist in earth.
@23nemi23 and what is funny about the horror and truth about war is that when it is told few want to listen to it and many even till this day call it defeatism or anti-patriotic
The idea that we are all the same would make war seem pointless, would it not?
Remarque may not have set out to write an anti-war book, he simply wanted to realistically portray the soldiers' life. But in the end he showed us all the horrifying and pointless aspects of war, and in that sense I think it carries a strong anti-war message.
we watched this in English because we were studying poetry of world war I and when the teacher said it would be in black and white people were thinking this was going to be boring but everybody enjoyed it and even though it wasn't an anti-war film we wacthed Saving Private Ryan and I found this far more powerful and easier to watch xx thanks for posting
My history teacher let us watch a bit of this in his class. I was a bit skeptical at first because he kept pushing how great and morbidly realistic is -- but I gotta admit, this is pretty friggin' awesome! I don't want to shit on modern war movies, but well. They just don't seem to hit that mark of realism that this movie does. (: I got chills at some parts!
My German great Grandad was wounded on both fronts and won an iron cross like many others so when I see worl war 1 stuff I always think of him I am English first and my English great grandad also fought and survived a gas attack but I think fighting on two fronts is more siginificant than one. GERMAN PRIDE WORLDWIDE.
@phil1958uk: Greed, power and vengance don't slow because of good movies. Besides, I'm sure none of the highjackers in whatever-a-stan watched this film. Nationalism fuels people more than anything. A shiny badge or a chance of freedom is the carrot in front of the military's face. Our motivations will always lead to war for as long as we think. I am from America and yet I feel sorrow for all sides. We all try to obtain happiness, we lose happiness, and give it to our children. It is honor
is this movie close to the book im trying to cheat and watch this instead of reading

For the entirety of WW1 German forces held the superior ground in almost every battle. In the Somme they were on top of a hill, in Passchendaele they were on top of a ridge. Meanwhile the Allied forces had to dig in to the mud and wait it out.
MrMrUSMC 5 months ago
@MrMrUSMC They were also outnumbered and for most of the war fighting on 2 fronts. Their resources were never enough to last throughout a war of attrition which is why the Shlieffen plan was all about surprise and speed.

war, war never changes
lololrofl50 6 months ago
@lololrofl50 It does, so do views about it. The war fought by the Spartans was different from WWI in every single way, except that people died in both. The reasons, the ideology, and the methodology are all specific to each war and to each time.
AdoraBell 5 months ago
@AdoraBell actually, its a quote. and honestly it doesnt. people have always foughten for things such as land, power, money, religion, and simple greed. the only thing that has changed is the weapons we used
lololrofl50 5 months ago
@lololrofl50 Overall, yes, but each time and place has its reason for going to war. Also, the way the war is perceived is different depending on the time and place. In each war it is the specifics that count. Throughout history people knew what they were getting into. It is only in WWI that the game changed. It's probably the first time that so many young people went out not knowing what was gonna happen.
AdoraBell 5 months ago
@AdoraBell you make a very good point

The film is very very good so I recommend BOTH film and book. Each reinforces the other.

The story does not make sense at first, and stuff just happens.
Watch it to the very end. The viewer and the soldier will participate together in the sad discovery.
It finally makes sense. It overwhelms. The earlier scenes are not random.

my favorite scene in this movie is when Paul is trapped in the crater with the soldier he stabbed, dying from the wound he inflicted upon him. This movie is one of my favorites because its core message is that in war no one is right, no one is wrong, no one is unwounded, and no one is innocent

This is a good representation of what war was like in the trenches of WWI, and this makes it even better because Erich Maria Remarque was an actual soldier for Germany during the war and this is made better becaue he gave his enterpretation of what the war was like in his perspective in the trenches.

ok i get it.The people who most suffered in war are the ladies.because the soldier is somebodie's son, brother or husband.you can insert this line "But Every bullet fired touches a women's heart" in the poem.
whay you say buddy?
23nemi23 11 months ago

DNchap1417 9 months ago
@DNchap1417 But still we haven't learn anything from 3000 years of warfare, still we wage war for silly reason like world war 1 .Ego is behind all the trouble, for ego clash country goes to war, family separated.

This is not an anti-war book. This is a soldiers demonstration that we are all human beings. The dead have no nationality,
MrJohanasBilderberg 1 year ago 2
@MrJohanasBilderberg

It is honor
