No one's probably gonna read this, but I’ll say it anyway cuz I feel at least 1 person will. I'm a young designer and graffiti artist, I know there's a million out there but I feel like my art has a unique individual style.
If you just take a min and give me a chance I'll make you a believer. I would love nothing more than to have a loyal following on youtube. If anyone who reads this could press the "THUMBS UP" others will see it. Just a simple button push will make a huge difference.
After a year of touring the band is visibly exhausted. If you can see the whole Loreley 1983 performance you can tell.
How different from Werchter 1981, I was shocked.
"Two hearts beat as one" was designed to be the big hit to lift them from the fashionable post-punk new wave crowd. "New Year's Day", however, was an unexpected success - the rest is history.
Watch carefully how in desperation by "huffing and puffing" Bono saves himself. As ever, Larry is the powerhouse.
I Will Follow is what really turned me on to the band back around '83. My younger brother as well. The 45s we played (don't laugh) indicated these guys were here to stay. And don't forget MTV.
@Coldacre It's almost like they were playing to save their lives - it's so passionate, fast and poignant, as if it's their last chance, just like this very song says.
I recently went back to listen to War properly, and i rediscovered great gems like The Refugee and Surrender... its a shame that these songs arent played that much these days.
For what it's worth this has to be the best U2 performance you will see on 'you tube' - certainly, in terms of their early 80's period. The atmosphere, setting, energy, verve and passion all just fuse together. Simple Minds are now my favourite band but back then U2 were something very special. Who gives a fuck if they were considered 'cool' or not. It takes more heart 'n courage to be open than it does to be some prick trying to create some form of detached mystery.
@spikelive - Simple Minds are every bit as good as U2 over the course of their long careers in music, SM's are actually better musicians. I totally agree with you.
but is the girl that shows the shirt to bono in reality thing showing him? the middle finger? the disapproval in their comparisons????? aaaaaaarrrrrggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!
ITALIA1!! be a channel of the italian television! that television channel exists today still but unfortunately they doesn't make to often see the U2s so much... kisses from italy!
That might be them at their best wow the energy. At this time they were probably seen as an uncool band. They had so much fight even Adam doing vocals
I am Marc Liddell. And hats off 2 U2 for being unique n great for over ten years. Most bands these days could not come anywhere near such an achievement. Fact.
I was there! My first U2 gig. Travelled from Scotland 2 c em. Intense. Magical. Spiritual. Inspiring. Qualities that age n success dilutes. Perhaps they have one last great record left in them but i have my doubts. No great U2 music since 'Achtung Baby'. Fact.
Don´t say that... there are those underrated songs like A man and a woman, Kite, When you look at the world, and Crumbs from your table that are great!
I would say "Unforgettable Fire" was the last great album, if not "War", in my opinion. When Joshua Tree came out, it was pretty good, but I think they started to go down hill.
Since you're from Scotland, what do you think of Big Country. I think they were better than U2, it's a shame they didn't get as much fame. I just get sad when I think about Stuart Adamson, that man had talent.
This song is a top of my list as #1 and i love the old days when i bought u2 albums and 45"s..I miss the old days but i look to the days ahead when u2 will make a tear in my eyes live as they have done from 1983 to today...I miss u2..waiting..cbono69
That cable guy in red t-shirt didn't imagine WHO was singing next to him. He just moved aside thinking "another band of crazy guys with a crazy singer"
I love all U2 eras, but this is definitely the raw energy and passion that draws me most to the band. As much as I love this album, Iam fully aware that not changing direction would have left us w/o songs like Bad, Streets, In God's Country, Still Havent found, the fly, etc. They can still play w/ this energy live, though. 3 masterpieces Joshua Tree, War and Achtung Baby!
One also has to love the irregular, sprawling concert ground. Today, it would only be a perfectly manicured, temperature-controlled indoor U.S. arena.
There's no use talking down other U2 eras, expect for perhaps pre-Lovetown tour Rattle & Hum. But there is a certain rawness in War not seen anywhere else. I love it all!
I agree with you AAV711. Its all to do with Edges guitar sound & their energy & tightness. I got hooked in 83 when I was 11yes old. Wish they still sounded like that. Give me BOY/OCT/WAR any time !!!
"War" was definately their best LP, this song is one of the reasons why. I love the percussive guitar technique that Edge uses. I once heard a live version of this song where they blended it with lyrics from Chubby Checker's "The Twist". It was incredible. Are there any clips out there of it?
This performance is definitely the best concert ever of U2. Bono has so much energy, it's total devotion to the crowd. His voice is perfect. Much better than the concert of the 90's.
This was the best concert U2 ever performed. Most of the songs from this gig ended up on 'Under A Blood Red Sky' why this was never included beats me?
Owww dit was toch ech wel super geweldig, wat heb ik mijzelf vaak uitgeleefd met dansen en meezingen!! Thanks Bono Xxx
