@5191keith Automatics ARE more consistent and reliable, but they are also SLOWER than a 4-speed. The reasons are simple. Autos are FAR kinder to the rest of the drive line, therefore, less breakage. They're slower because the converter, pump, and especially the planetary gearsets all require horsepower to operate, and it's enough power that the faster shifts don't make up the difference. That's why pro stocks run liberty's instead of lenco's these days.
dont tell me about weight disadvantage.how about the 33 cubes the chevy is giving up.i thought you couldnt beat cu inch on the street.cbb will smoke any 385 series with or without a weight difference.
@5191keith i agree 100% there was no muscle cars(mass produced) runnin 11 flat with just slicks and headers. i dont believe that 108mph either. that was a big stang in 71. i think the time in this video was faster then normal for those cars.
My factory stock '71 Mustang 429 SCJ auto w/4.11 Detroit Locker would turn 14.56@108mph at Fremont Dragstrip (CA) about '79. Running L60x15 street tires. Wouldn't hook up, spun the tires, from idle, all the way to just before the trap, on the primaries! When it hooked up, I would open the secondaries and it would light them up again. Embarrassing, turning the same time that 351 Torino's were.
Previous owner ran it at Atco Dragway (NJ) with headers and slicks, and turned flat 11's.

1971 Boss 351 runs a faster 1/4 mile time than the Camaro/Chevelle 396/375. Well documented.
