@ashelaque1 i think it's just to show that he was never there. He goes away when she's asleep and comes back when she's up because she's making it all up. He passed away from cancer because the picture at the end shows that he lost his hair, probably from chemotherapy.

Dude died on their anniversary from cancer. Chick is traumatized and can't get past it, therefore, his image still appears in her life (i'm guessing specially since it was during the time of both his death and their anniversary celebration).
