As a child I used to make sure I was in the house at 10 pm Sunday nights to hear New Bethel broadcast just to hear their theme song Only a Look. The soloist is Lucy Layton. The high note in the background in the one and only Ms. Grace Cobb. Thank you for taking me back
AMEN AMEN!!! Another priceless recording of this song as sung by New Bethel choir. The lead here reminds me of the version sung by Bessie Folk. Hearing it with this type of organ also gives it another dimension. As always, let us not forget the songs that are part of the gospel legacy. Whenever we can, we must sing these songs so the generations coming along will know the rich heritage that is Gospel Music.
This is an opening from the weekly 10:00p.m., radio broadcast emulating from the sanctuary of the New Bethel Baptist Church, (then) pastor by Rev. Clarence LaVaughan Franklin. Still located on Linwood at Philadelphia Streets on the west side of Detroit, MI. The organist is Herbert "Pee-Wee" Pickard. Mr. Pickard is a renowned Detroit gospel pianist and as you'll hear a remarkable organist too.
Every version of "Only a Look" that I have heard is awesome. I would love to hear a choir sing it today. Although I'm no longer associated with any choir, I have to mention it to a few ministers of music.
That organ sounds like a Wurlitzer. I love it. Do you remember when the soloist wound sing the verses and then the director would raise the chior to sing the chorus.? That was church in the "day" my friends.
I used to have this recording and I loaned it to someone and it was never returned. Oh well. You need to hear them sing " I'll get home someday, thank God get home someday" You will run with the Holy Spirit. Tenors start off: We are climbing higher and higher Altos: Day by day getting closer to my Lord Sop: With the Lord as my leader er'one: My God and my keeper I'll get home someday thank God get home some day Yes I'll make it home some day I know I'll make it......
There was such a sacredness in these singers and choirs. Such a drawing that pulled you toward Jesus Christ. I feel it every time I hears them. Cause my daddy that was a STONE COLD sinner turn to Jesus and become a fire baptized evangelist and pastor. He's gone to heaven now. The mean so much more now than they used to.
Thanks for the song only a look. I've heard several versions of the song from the Roberta Martin singers to James Cleveland and Rev C L Franklin it is a great song.
thank ya jesus whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I dunno who is singing but they are doing an excellent job! It sounds like the live version done in the 70s with Billie and Delois Barrett leading it! I wonder who is singing here though.
I love me some good gospel singing....I'm talking about the kind of singing that makes you throw your hands up in the air and shout.
