How anyone can like the Johnny Cash cover better than the original is beyond me. I like the Johnny Cash cover, but it doesn't have anywhere near the obviously painstaking power and emotion that Trent Reznor had put into the original, you could see all of the despair in his face and hear it in his voice. It's nuts that this video only has half a million views while the Johnny Cash cover has thirty million views, and half of those views are probably those who dont even know that it's an NIN cover.
This songs takes me back in time. All the memories in my head. I wish I had been at that concert The ending, when the bird dives into the lake to get the fish while the guitar distorts is AWESOME.
The Downward Spiral........no doubt one of the greatest records ever made imo......Thank you Trent......people will hear you a hundred years from now.

I came hear to dedicate this Video on my facebook page to Cory Smooth Aka (Flattus Maximus) of Gwar. I thought this song appropriate to play for someone who has passed on into the next world.
wow. what can i say. somedays you just need to hear this. Dallas show '94. like i only remember because i have the t shirt. too many concerts too much. 2 weeks ago i ran into walmart to grab something. this song was on the radio. i left my car and walked through the parking lot, there were at least 3 cars with radio up and windows down listening to this. That moved me. I thought, wow, I am at the right walmart :)
@the48carRox I believe this was shot @ the Fairpark Coliseum in '94, I was at that show as well, and distinctly remember the t-shirt being thrown back and forth, and towards the end of the song, someone through a tshirt that was on fire towards the stage, which you can see to the right of the screen about 45 seconds before the end of the vid,, great show, great memories!!
I"m pretty sure this was the original music video, I remember seeing it on television back in the day. God I love this song, Trent Reznor is a musical genius.
wow. this recording from the Dallas show brings back so much - man how time has flown by and things have evolved since. in retrospect... this had to be one of the best shows ever.
@1that70skid I saw them live in 2009 and when they played hurt, I remember seeing people in the crowd putting up their lighters. I wasn't in tears but I felt a strong sense of sadness inside me. Musically, it was an awesome show.
@tgoody100 From what I understand (thanks to English class...), the snake is a representation of innocence. It's not a malevolent snake, it's not wanting to hurt you. It just wants out. Just look at it: It's so cute, but it's still a snake. It's still dangerous. But it's innocent.
We watched this in English today (after we explicated the song as a poem). The meaning of just the words with no music and no visual imagery is so different from the meaning of the song (which, by the way, is marvelous. Both versions are). Goodness, I love English class. We learn about such amazing songs.
@HburgEagle44 That's exactly what we just did! I was the only one in the class who'd heard of Trent Reznor when my teacher brought it up, but my hand shot up immediately with pride.
After analyzing the lyrics and then watching this video, we studied how Cash's cover changed the tone, though the words stayed the same.
It's a truly meaningful, beautiful, and bittersweet song, but I couldn't stop grinning during the period from disbelief that we were actually doing this. Best English class ever.
@Potandthekettle True, but while Cash's video seemed slightly focused on martyrdom (at least regarding his material possessions and accomplishments), I was always under the impression that he changed that word for censorship purposes. It fit Reznor's style and the tone of the album, but didn't seem like something Cash would say, especially on a song he treated in such a reflective way.
@Potandthekettle Exactly. That one little word change is explained by Cash's beliefs and he wouldn't have said "crown of shit." It could be coincidental that it just happens to fit his video and intentions more this way, but the rest of the song is the same. Just goes to show how a different singer and different imagery can affect the tone and meaning of the song.
@Potandthekettle actually cash didn't change the words to show he was a devout christian, Reznor sang the lyrics "crown of thorns" on the radio release of this single
I can not believe that people actually think that Nine Inch Nails wrote this song. This is not at all the type of song a man like Trent Resnor would right. Trent Resnor never wen't through pain like this. Only a man like Johnny Cash could have written a masterpiece such as this. Go ahead and argue with me. I have proof that I am right on my channel. You will admit I'm right after you have watched the videos on my channel that proove beyond any doubt that Johnny Cash wrote the song Hurt.
@Coyote DON'T get mad but i hate country music.the only 2 country singers i like are Willie nelson and johnny cash.IF you want any sad songs, leave it to the best ever!...-Trent-
BourgeoisMachinery, you are an idiot, "The Downward Spiral" was released in 1994, well before a release of this song by Johnny Cash in 2002. If you would take the time to educate yourself you would know that. The album is a about a man in trouble and "Hurt" is a song after he killed himself. The whole recording is a story worth listening too, there are so many great songs on "The Downward Spiral" (And might I add on the origional tour).
@ringfingr I do appreciate the music history lesson but you should probably read my last comment before wasting anymore of your time. It should be obvious to everyone that Cash released this song on his 1960 album "Great Trucking Songs of the Renaissance' outdating "The Down Spral" by over 9 years.
I was intrigued by this song from the moment I heard Cash's cover in some sports ad, but I had no way back then to find out about it. Years later, in a lame anti-abortion video on YouTube, Cash's version was playing.
That's how I got to this video. That was some 5-6 years ago.
The music, the lyrics (I understood them astoundingly well, given that English is not my native tongue and I wasn't as good at it as I am now) and the background images got me in tears.
This is officially the best comment section on Youtube. Interesting how the exact same thing is happening on Johnny Cash's Hurt videos, just substitute 'Cash' with 'Reznor'. I wonder if everyone posting here is successfully managing to troll each other... I certainly hope so.
@panteraofgod oh yea definitely, he redid that song right before he died to pretty much sum up his life, i know for a fact Nine inch Nails made it first
Been loving this for years.. The heartfelt emotion in this song rocks Cash's world. Cash did pick a great song and covered it and made it his own, but Trent can only do it this well. No one else is even in his stratosphere
Both versions are awesome, Trent is an awesome artist and Johnny is the father of all rock, metal, punk and what came after ,he singing this song its just too great, fuck the stupid haters!!!!
I'm confused... The 16 people that disliked this song. What's you're reason? This is from trents personal experience and he sings his heart out.. What's to dislike about this work of art?
Trent is one of the greatest artists of the last couple of decades. Who cares if some people like the Johnny Cash version better - they're obviously on crack.
Please, don't feed the trolls. It is obvious that Mr. hokeyplaya came into this video with the soul intention of putting down the band, and he's not going to change his mind. You are fighting a battle that you will not win. Plus, take into account his name: hockeyplaya1000, he's obviously either 12 (and probably a chunky little punk at that) or just vastly unoriginal. Either way though, you lose.
@symbolicalcohalic You're mistaken. June Carter-Cash died in 2003, where as Cash's cover was released in 2002. Johnny Cash's cover is much like the NIN version, the same emphasis is looking back on a career and losing the important aspects of life itself, he just uses drugs as a way to keep away the numbness of it all. Where as the original is only semi-autobiographical, the Cash version is almost a true to life confession. Both are strikingly powerful
One time some guy tried to tell me it was Johnny Cash who wrote this song and not Trent Reznor, which is ppular opinion. And I said that was bullocks. Bullshit. NIN wrote Hurt plain and simple. But then I did some research and turns out that crazy guy was right about it the whole time. I posted all the evidence up on my channel so you guys can learn the truth too. Turns out Johnny Cash really did write the song, and a lot of people collaborated to and make it seem otherwise.
Its not about his heroin addiction. He was not a heroin addict. Its primarily about someone looking back at their life, either from from the grave. Its about regret.....Etc Its the final chapter of a character's downward spiral. Its apart of that concept album. That record has a "storyline". Or you can say the video is about humanity, and how we have treated each other. But that is a stretch...
MINDBLOWINGLY BEAUTIFUL. THERE IS A REASON JOHNNY CASH COVERED THIS. BECAUSE TRENT IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGWRITERS OF THE PAST 20 YEARS. AND HE SAW THE BEAUTY IN THIS TRACK.
jonney cash is good, Trent is better. They both sing this song, they are both good at singing this song. WHO THE FUCK CARES WHO SINGS IT BETTER!!!!!

I'm confused... The 16 people that disliked this song. What's you're reason? This is from trents personal experience and he sings his heart out.. What's to dislike about this work of art?

Anyone know when and where this was recorded, it's by far the best version...

Trent is one of the greatest artists of the last couple of decades. Who cares if some people like the Johnny Cash version better - they're obviously on crack.

@panteraofgod nin sucks this song is only good because of mr cash himself!
hockeyplaya1000 6 months ago
@hockeyplaya1000 but if it wasn't for NIN mr cash wouldn't have done a cover of this song

@lol909ism

@LaGoonch uneducated idiots who think they know everything in other words.

@lol909ism
Yeah, pretty much. But then again, that also sums up the majority of the YouTube "community" as a whole really. :/

i dont like how johnny covered it on his loss of his wife the songs about drugs and losing everyone not your wife
symbolicalcohalic 6 months ago
@symbolicalcohalic You're mistaken. June Carter-Cash died in 2003, where as Cash's cover was released in 2002. Johnny Cash's cover is much like the NIN version, the same emphasis is looking back on a career and losing the important aspects of life itself, he just uses drugs as a way to keep away the numbness of it all. Where as the original is only semi-autobiographical, the Cash version is almost a true to life confession. Both are strikingly powerful

awesome is hard to choose who preformed best this song Cash or NIN
Rexende05 6 months ago
@panteraofgod he probably always loved the song, he just thought it's a good sum up of his life. that said nin version is a far superior song

EXTREMELY POWERFUL SONG.
