  • jonney cash is good, Trent is better. They both sing this song, they are both good at singing this song. WHO THE FUCK CARES WHO SINGS IT BETTER!!!!!

  • How anyone can like the Johnny Cash cover better than the original is beyond me. I like the Johnny Cash cover, but it doesn't have anywhere near the obviously painstaking power and emotion that Trent Reznor had put into the original, you could see all of the despair in his face and hear it in his voice. It's nuts that this video only has half a million views while the Johnny Cash cover has thirty million views, and half of those views are probably those who dont even know that it's an NIN cover.

  • 1995 the year that changed my life , i was 21

  • The visuals in this video are amazing.

  • Its so funny how many people think Johnny Cash wrote this song. Its only like a decate late remix!

  • NIN wrote the song. Johny Cash gave life to it and brought out the true meaning of getting hurt.

  • @Kryolyte the meaning is in the lyrics, not in a fucking cover song. cash did nothing but steal it

  • @TheNcd24 Dude Reznor gave him the OK relax

  • @Kryolyte

Bullshit. Cash was a HORRIBLE musician.

  • @unopeneddoor i hope you're joking ....

  • @GeneralCambronne

It was a protest post. Only meant to be on once, but my computer messed up.

  • Diomarzian.

  • I just can say that is really deep and overwhelming, just feel like going in a "downward spiral". This song gives me goose bumps everytime I hear it.

    Universal song.

  • La canción por sí sola es excelente pero en esta presentación al minuto 4:20 es impactante

  • The end??? Really?

  • The Downward Spiral........no doubt one of the greatest records ever made imo......Thank you Trent......people will hear you a hundred years from now.

  • does any one know what the movie in the background is called?

  • @pcancerides It's not a movie, they are just random images of war, famine, and a fox decompising backwards. It's too "help" interpret the hurt felt by all

  • @pcancerides it's a movie called a life

y'know a lot of scary and ugly things take place in our world

  • Straziante.... :'(( <3 Capolavoro!

  • This would be a great song for when the Ponds die or go away in Doctor Who.

  • my empire of VEVO

  • dear youtube/vevo, there seems so be a glitch, because after the ad plays and the music starts, the ad audio restarts. Please fix?

Thumbs up so they can see this or if you have the same problem.

  • should be more views.

  • 18 people never fealt this way.

  • @TheDirtyDerz

I was 19-th. And i have to say that other 1712 never fealt this way focusing on death.

  • wow. what can i say. somedays you just need to hear this. Dallas show '94. like i only remember because i have the t shirt. too many concerts too much. 2 weeks ago i ran into walmart to grab something. this song was on the radio. i left my car and walked through the parking lot, there were at least 3 cars with radio up and windows down listening to this. That moved me. I thought, wow, I am at the right walmart :)

  • @the48carRox I believe this was shot @ the Fairpark Coliseum in '94, I was at that show as well, and distinctly remember the t-shirt being thrown back and forth, and towards the end of the song, someone through a tshirt that was on fire towards the stage, which you can see to the right of the screen about 45 seconds before the end of the vid,, great show, great memories!!

  • NIN just kicked ass! Trent Reznor and Co. just don't let up on The Downward Spiral.

  • was this show in Houston, Texas?

  • I"m pretty sure this was the original music video, I remember seeing it on television back in the day. God I love this song, Trent Reznor is a musical genius.

  • @Mafila the original got scrapped this is the second

  • wow. this recording from the Dallas show brings back so much - man how time has flown by and things have evolved since. in retrospect... this had to be one of the best shows ever.

  • @1that70skid i believe you :)

  • @1that70skid Thanks...liar.

  • @1that70skid Yeah, thats a lie...

  • @1that70skid Yeah, that's a lie.

  • @1that70skid I saw them live in 2009 and when they played hurt, I remember seeing people in the crowd putting up their lighters. I wasn't in tears but I felt a strong sense of sadness inside me. Musically, it was an awesome show.

  • @1that70skid Indeed. It is not the same. That makes both songs even better to me that the same song can have two different meanings and feelings.

  • HE IS SHOWING US HUMANITY WITH THESE VISUALS IM TOTALLY HALF ALIVE /DEAD NOW AND IT FEELS BETTER!!

  • @1that70skid which show is it?

  • What's the snake for?

  • @tgoody100 From what I understand (thanks to English class...), the snake is a representation of innocence. It's not a malevolent snake, it's not wanting to hurt you. It just wants out. Just look at it: It's so cute, but it's still a snake. It's still dangerous. But it's innocent.

    Does that help? :)

  • Most powerful music video of the 90s...filmed live in Cleveland, my home!

  • i feel so alive¡

  • This song is so important to me and my best friend damn...

  • We watched this in English today (after we explicated the song as a poem). The meaning of just the words with no music and no visual imagery is so different from the meaning of the song (which, by the way, is marvelous. Both versions are). Goodness, I love English class. We learn about such amazing songs.

  • @HburgEagle44 That's exactly what we just did! I was the only one in the class who'd heard of Trent Reznor when my teacher brought it up, but my hand shot up immediately with pride.

After analyzing the lyrics and then watching this video, we studied how Cash's cover changed the tone, though the words stayed the same.

It's a truly meaningful, beautiful, and bittersweet song, but I couldn't stop grinning during the period from disbelief that we were actually doing this. Best English class ever.

  • @Blade3327 Technically he changed the lyrics "crown of shit" to "crown of thorns". Which changes the meaning quite a bit there

  • @Potandthekettle True, but while Cash's video seemed slightly focused on martyrdom (at least regarding his material possessions and accomplishments), I was always under the impression that he changed that word for censorship purposes. It fit Reznor's style and the tone of the album, but didn't seem like something Cash would say, especially on a song he treated in such a reflective way.

  • @Blade3327 Of course its something he would say. He was a devout Christian. And I dont see how using Christian symbolism is trents style

  • @Potandthekettle Exactly. That one little word change is explained by Cash's beliefs and he wouldn't have said "crown of shit." It could be coincidental that it just happens to fit his video and intentions more this way, but the rest of the song is the same. Just goes to show how a different singer and different imagery can affect the tone and meaning of the song.

  • @Potandthekettle actually cash didn't change the words to show he was a devout christian, Reznor sang the lyrics "crown of thorns" on the radio release of this single

  • @Blade3327 and we wont even mention leona..........

  • @Blade3327 THAT WAS ENGLISH!!!!! I WANT TO GO TO YOUR SCHOOL!!!lol

  • @Blade3327 I saw him sing hurt live in the 90's, it was amazing, nobody in your class has heard of Trent, he did win an oscar ya know.

  • @tatorsal I know. And a Golden Globe.

Sadly, no one in my class heard of him. I know a few people at school who have, but in that particular class, zippo.

  • Trent wrote it, cash cover the song. End of story... Facts my friends

  • @ delivery boy, who cares? Trint jus made it darker because it is a dark sad song, so he brought that out more so shut the fuck up n get a life

  • @jennyraetruman84 yeah delivery boy is just a troll lol, Trent wrote it

  • @DeliveryManBoy trying to get everyone mad. TROLL ASS

  • @DeliveryManBoy god I mean Trent Reznor so clearly wrote the song.... giant faggot

  • @DeliveryManBoy

    ROFL!

Troll ass nigga, get the fuck out of here.

  • @DeliveryManBoy Trent Reznor wrote Hurt in the 90's..Johnny cash recorded his cover in 2002-2003.

  • @smallhours247 It really does amaze me how many people think that Cash originally wrote the song just because he was around before NIN.

  • @DeliveryManBoy Obvious troll is obvious...

  • CLICK ON: disccentury, MY MUSIC, NEVER SEEN

  • I Hate you VEVO !

  • this is the best video out of all the other concerts!

  • @IMINTHEMOMENTRU my all time favorites is the"Great Below" watch the one that has the movie Romeo N Juliet as the video it's amazing.

  • @Coyote DON'T get mad but i hate country music.the only 2 country singers i like are Willie nelson and johnny cash.IF you want any sad songs, leave it to the best ever!...-Trent-

  • Cash does it better.

  • Deliberately shrunk the page so I don't have to look at the simpering cunt gurning out right next to the video.

  • great song..I like Johnny Cash's version too...

  • 0:59 - The snake of doom and destruction!

  • BourgeoisMachinery, you are an idiot, "The Downward Spiral" was released in 1994, well before a release of this song by Johnny Cash in 2002. If you would take the time to educate yourself you would know that. The album is a about a man in trouble and "Hurt" is a song after he killed himself. The whole recording is a story worth listening too, there are so many great songs on "The Downward Spiral" (And might I add on the origional tour).

  • @ringfingr I do appreciate the music history lesson but you should probably read my last comment before wasting anymore of your time. It should be obvious to everyone that Cash released this song on his 1960 album "Great Trucking Songs of the Renaissance' outdating "The Down Spral" by over 9 years.

    Retard...

  • @BourgeoisMachinery What. The. Fuck.

  • I was intrigued by this song from the moment I heard Cash's cover in some sports ad, but I had no way back then to find out about it. Years later, in a lame anti-abortion video on YouTube, Cash's version was playing.

That's how I got to this video. That was some 5-6 years ago.

The music, the lyrics (I understood them astoundingly well, given that English is not my native tongue and I wasn't as good at it as I am now) and the background images got me in tears.

    Something changed in me forever.

  • when that bird hits the water as the guitar crescendos...damn. It doesn't get any better than that! That's damn fine live production values.

  • This is officially the best comment section on Youtube. Interesting how the exact same thing is happening on Johnny Cash's Hurt videos, just substitute 'Cash' with 'Reznor'. I wonder if everyone posting here is successfully managing to troll each other... I certainly hope so.

  • im so fucking mad that when i saw nin on their final tour, the stage hands fucked up the pa and trent couldnt perform this for his encore.

  • “EVERYONE I KNOW GOES AWAY IN THE END...."

  • this is trents song not cash's........damn, dummies.

  • @thenumbheart23 just do it and get it over with you whiney emo

  • Total Cash cover, nice job Trent... You hack.

  • @BourgeoisMachinery You're a fucking idiot. Cash covered this not NIN. moron

  • @werewolfmatingritual look it up, I'm right, you are wrong.

  • @BourgeoisMachinery facepalming so hard right now. A simple wiki reading would prove you wrong XD

  • @BourgeoisMachinery Do you enjoy being stupid on a day to day basis?

  • @EtherealSun111 Do you enjoy feeding trolls?

  • @BourgeoisMachinery Why yes, yes I do.

  • @BourgeoisMachinery the mark of a good troll is to never admit you are trolling.... epic fail.

  • @panteraofgod oh yea definitely, he redid that song right before he died to pretty much sum up his life, i know for a fact Nine inch Nails made it first

  • I LOVE THIS SONG! =)

  • @panteraofgod i still like Johnny Cash's version better

  • 3:33 thats why this version is better....

  • Been loving this for years.. The heartfelt emotion in this song rocks Cash's world. Cash did pick a great song and covered it and made it his own, but Trent can only do it this well. No one else is even in his stratosphere

  • trent = sexy broken

  • @panteraofgod CAPS LOCK I HOPE YOU HEAR ME CAPS LOCK AND NOT A SINGLE COMMA.

  • badass song guys

  • Both versions are awesome, Trent is an awesome artist and Johnny is the father of all rock, metal, punk and what came after ,he singing this song its just too great, fuck the stupid haters!!!!

  • I'm confused... The 16 people that disliked this song. What's you're reason? This is from trents personal experience and he sings his heart out.. What's to dislike about this work of art?

  • Anyone know when and where this was recorded, it's by far the best version...

  • What is that weird mythological being @2:24/2:25?

    P.S. great video!

  • @panasonic1978 It's a Demon from a Medieval depiction of Hell. :D

  • Comment removed

  • Trent is one of the greatest artists of the last couple of decades. Who cares if some people like the Johnny Cash version better - they're obviously on crack.

  • @panteraofgod nin sucks this song is only good because of mr cash himself!

  • @hockeyplaya1000 but if it wasn't for NIN mr cash wouldn't have done a cover of this song

  • @lol909ism

Please, don't feed the trolls. It is obvious that Mr. hokeyplaya came into this video with the soul intention of putting down the band, and he's not going to change his mind. You are fighting a battle that you will not win. Plus, take into account his name: hockeyplaya1000, he's obviously either 12 (and probably a chunky little punk at that) or just vastly unoriginal. Either way though, you lose.

  • @LaGoonch uneducated idiots who think they know everything in other words.

  • @lol909ism

Yeah, pretty much. But then again, that also sums up the majority of the YouTube "community" as a whole really. :/

  • @hockeyplaya1000 stop your damn trolling

  • I FEEL LIKE....

  • @panteraofgod speak it like it is and fuck the rest...you hit the nail on the head...

  • trent reznor went on record saying that Cash's version is the definitive version

  • best video ever btw love both versions trolls piss off

  • Comment removed

  • who called a horse a closet fag on March 5th?

  • i dont like how johnny covered it on his loss of his wife the songs about drugs and losing everyone not your wife

  • @symbolicalcohalic You're mistaken. June Carter-Cash died in 2003, where as Cash's cover was released in 2002. Johnny Cash's cover is much like the NIN version, the same emphasis is looking back on a career and losing the important aspects of life itself, he just uses drugs as a way to keep away the numbness of it all. Where as the original is only semi-autobiographical, the Cash version is almost a true to life confession. Both are strikingly powerful

  • awesome is hard to choose who preformed best this song Cash or NIN

  • @panteraofgod he probably always loved the song, he just thought it's a good sum up of his life. that said nin version is a far superior song

  • johnny cash NIN both make it look good but i hope u think johnny cash is better

  • the only people that think nin covered cash are fuck faces that wear sideways hats

  • Comment removed

  • When Johnny Cash covers YOUR song, you know you made it.

  • @CocaineSavior Hell Yeah. :D

  • I think this is one of the best performance and dvideo of Nine Inc Nails!!!

  • MINDBLOWINGLY BEAUTIFUL. THERE IS A REASON JOHNNY CASH COVERED THIS. BECAUSE TRENT IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGWRITERS OF THE PAST 20 YEARS. AND HE SAW THE BEAUTY IN THIS TRACK.

    EXTREMELY POWERFUL SONG.

  • HURT -A song that Renzor made talking about his heroin addiction.. my fave song, its got me through some rough times

  • whats the big video got to do with the song? im not giving out coz i love it but i jsut dont get it
