I actually just learned the secret to their speedy switch last night. No I'm not going to say but it blew me away when I found out. One of the cool things about planning a magic show is getting to talk with other magicians who know far more than me. Even though I know how it's done I still love watching the moment when they switch.

@blizz3166 That is not really his assistant; she is a full partner and is (still, technically anyway) his wife. Anyway, this trick obviously is not done as is explained in some textbooks (the Bess and Harry Houdini version)- there simply is not enough time between him (re) appearing and her to disappear. The cloth disappears in less than a second; she simply does not have enough time to simply drop down and disappear as he appears. Think about it! Must be a unique angle to this matter.

my method is proved as when the veil drops over the box and the man jumps off you very quickly see the hatch door close improperly it just after the veil goes past the mans feet. if you watch that second over and over you can see it. this is still an amazing piece of magic. and the timing is very clever you notice before the veil part of the trick and after there is a gap allowing first the man to escape and then time for the audiences applause gives time for the woman to get into the sack.

the way it is done is: when the woman is lifting the veil the man is allready out of the bag and the trunk, the knot used is a quick release loop. he just pulls the loose end and the knot falls apart. the trunks lid is split into two pieces the front half is solid which is what the woman and later the man stands on. the back half is able to be opened up like a barn door design as he gets out of the case he leaves it open for her to jump in. they switch places and she gets into the sack.

Absolutely not! fedokodmokrator. First, Metamorphosis was invented by John Nevil Maskelyne, an english magician but not by the escapologist (and not "magician") Harry Houdini. But Houdini popularized this illusion only because he was able to attract the journalists and the crowd (his best routine! lol)

It must take amazing fitness to be able to do the switch that fast, which is fine for that video's time...I'd say they're in their 20s...but the amazing thing is, I saw them perform that same trick last week, and they're OLD now....the woman is even a little fatter, and they still pulled it off in the exact same manner. So I'd say it's pretty amazing.

Also, from where I was seated, I could see behind the chest, and I confirm that no one is behind the chest as someone said.

Totally agree with you. Magic and illusion are tricks that take skill, timing, practice and perfection. The delivery, skill and magicians perfermance style are what really impress me, even if i know how the trick is done, you can see how they put their effort and hard work into the trick and add their unique and artistic way of showing it to the world. There is magic the mechanics/engineering, and then magic the perfermance. I'm not really a fan of the pendragons, but they executed this perfect.

The woman was actually doing a free fall to achieve speed. The body of the male appearing is large enough to conceal the lady as she was falling. At precisely :50 secs, the gap within the man's legs are still hidden which gives her enough time to hide. This trick was timed at that precise moment to achieve illusion.

My friend and I recently performed that act, and boy oh boy!! We practiced every day for I think about one and a half weeks (we didn't have a lot of time) and we had a great change, but theirs is so fucking fast, I can only imagine how long and hard they must have worked to achieve that. There is IMHO some extra trick involved.. since we calculated, she disapears faster than gravity, that is hop from the side of the box into the open top... I don't know how exactly, either he gives her a good push downwards on her hips, so her starting velocity is greater than zero, or they work with rubber bands. Either to go into the box that fast is sure quite a strain involved, but with her trained body she sure can sustain that :)

It's rather simple. By the time she is moving around outside the box and locking it, etc. he is already hiding behind the trunk via a panel in the back of the box. When she jumps onto the top of the box, notice her legs are spread. This aids in the transformation illusion. As she lifts the curtain he is climbing onto the top of the box between her legs and is crouched down ready to jump up, he does so as she jumps backward to the floor. There.. now you know.

I'm a fan of great magicians but The Pendragons are hacky jokes at best. The Pendragons aren't smooth at all. Many other magicians perform these tricks better. I even think they stole tricks from David Copperfield. Also notice that Charlotte Pendragon goes overboard on showing off her body. It's like "look at me" and it really takes away from the trick.

Also, this is an old clip and a product of it's time. This is among the best stage effects I'v ever seen peformed.

Well, actually quite a few professional acts compete on the show for the publicity. Kevin James did quite well last year and he's had quite a career so far and got some great work as a result of his appearances. Besides, I think that Jonathan explained pretty clearly why he was there. I don't get to be costume police for anybody's act but my own.

I understood what you wrote. My point is that magic, to paraphrase the bible, is a mansion with many rooms. I think that there is room for a pastor presenting magic in a sermon. There is room for an urban punk magician, a singing magician, a dancing magician, even a buck naked magician (it was done in the 70's actually). If the act can find an appropriate audience, and this act has found its audience over the years, then there is nothing inappropriate with its presentation.

But that's kinda the point. If you take all day to do it, it's absurdly obvious. Executing it in a split second, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish entirely. It's like when the Masked Magician tried to expose it, and it took him all day to get into the box.
