B/c if you put it in perspective; there are people that listen to classical European, classical Asian, traditional African tribal, etc music and they probably think this Duffy stuff is silly and 'pop fluff'. #Dontbechildish
Also, the older artists that we consider to produce 'classics' have all at some point experienced a time when they're music was considered by the mainstream to be pop-fluff.

I think it is a bit close-minded of us to automatically dislike people that enjoy popular music because we feel liking this makes us superior or "free from the mental shackles". There is no reason do be childish. I don't enjoy all the Akons, T-Pains, Nicki Minajs, PitBulls what-what, either. But I don't walk around acting like the fact that I listen to the Erykahs, Marvins, Marleys, Adeles, Duffys, Winehouses etc makes me eligible for an honorary PhD in Music.

The wrong people are growing up today, clearly. Well, in American at least. I am African American and this is pretty much all I listen to; artist like Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Adele... Pure art. I have a very tasteful choice in music varying plenty different artists. But this, this is soul. People don't understand that. =/

As a musician myself (albeit not a vocal musician, I'm a violinist) I understand it can be difficult for someone to continually bring 'something new' to the table when you made such an impression with the first album. What I was trying to say was, it's not unheard of for things to go wrong second or third time around.
I love DUFFY - but she is pigeon-holing herself by constantly singings songs that focus on the two themes of her current releases. 1. she seems to always be begging or pleading for rescue or attention in most her songs. That gets old. And 2. That personal pronoun 'me' and or "I" seems to be in song after song after song. She's a much better singer than to be confined to the bubblegum box of "me, me me" or "help, help help".

I had never heard of Duffy prior to hearing it on that show. Now, loads of L Word fans are also fans of not only this song, but Duffy. She is "cool" with us. She does not need to sell out to the "homonazis," (whom ever the fuck they are).
It's easy to understand how: the majority of people doesn't have taste for music at all. It's not a matter of liking this and disliking that, it's another issue. People generally doesn't know ANYTHING about art, particularly music. So we have hundreds of Lady GaGooGaGaGooGoos for each Amy or Duffy that appears sometimes.

Duffy would kill Taylor Swift in a singing and lyrics battle. yes taylor may be pretty and a kinda good song writer and she has a lot of fans. but does that make her a really good singer? no. Duffy's lyrics have more meaning and her songs aren't just about exes like taylors. Duffy's way better than most female pop stars out now. i wish she was more mainstream in the US.

@Eithneification Her new album isn't getting the greatest reviews, just like I expected. She doesn't bring anything new after her first album, it now all starts to sound the same, the novelty has worn off. I get the impression that many people agree with me, after seeing how her new album is rated on Amazon by people who bought it...

And she wouldn't be the first person to make a crap album. Pretty much every artist has done so at some stage. I would still rather listen to Duffy than The Beatles. But hey, that's just my opinion :)

@bfr0d I actually mentioned that yes, it was an opinion. Secondly, I didn't mention that 'she doesn't bring anything new'. That was presented as fact. As a musician myself (albeit not a vocal musician, I'm a violinist) I understand it can be difficult for someone to continually bring 'something new' to the table when you made such an impression with the first album. What I was trying to say was, it's not unheard of for things to go wrong second or third time around.

I love DUFFY - but she is pigeon-holing herself by constantly singings songs that focus on the two themes of her current releases. 1. she seems to always be begging or pleading for rescue or attention in most her songs. That gets old. And 2. That personal pronoun 'me' and or "I" seems to be in song after song after song. She's a much better singer than to be confined to the bubblegum box of "me, me me" or "help, help help".

@oneblackgeye I don't know about all that. Duffy has a HUGE lesbian fanbase because of this song being featured on the final season of "The L Word." I had never heard of Duffy prior to hearing it on that show. Now, loads of L Word fans are also fans of not only this song, but Duffy. She is "cool" with us. She does not need to sell out to the "homonazis," (whom ever the fuck they are).

It's easy to understand how: the majority of people doesn't have taste for music at all. It's not a matter of liking this and disliking that, it's another issue.
