There's Pokemon Brown (a Red version hack) and Pokemon Rijion Adventures (Fire Red hack.) Both are set in made up regions and are very high quality. Then there is Liquid Crystal, a Fire Red which I'm playing right now and it's awesome, and also Shiny Gold, which I haven't played yet but I've heard it's really good, but both are set (or start) in Johto so you may not want to do those right after Vietnamese Crystal even though Liquid Crystal is quite different than the original.
