I will never understand why people think that because music is heavier, and maybe grungier, that it's not actually worshiping God. Just remember that the church called the organ the devil's pipes at first.
stmcgarret: the verse you quote and those you reference don't describe a musical form. Do you honestly think "psalms, hymns and spiritual songs" means no guitars and drums? You're going WAY beyond scripture.
i am not on either side. i do feel slightly uncomfortable with this kind of music in church, but i am not going to go ahead and condemn it either. I hope that they are truly worshipping God in spirirt and in truth, God knows. I am not sure yet. either way, im glad they want to do something for God.
great comment Conail23. I was born and raised catholic b4 truly knowing Jesus and this kind of anthems where strange to me (I was used to the really formal hymns) but it is a matter of style.I used to relate absolute formality /distnace with Jesus. When I met Him, I found so much joy that my particular style of loving him will not match the type of formal anthem, I will relate that to older people. After I heard christian-grunge I was amazed and that became appealing to my style to praise Jesus!

It does NOT honor God because it is not following God's pattern as he commands in the Scriptures. God never did accept the offering of Cain or the strange fire of Nadab and Abihu, and he will not today. This is of the flesh as those who have eyes to see can see. Seek the Lord in Spirit and Truth and "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."(Col 3:16)
I really don't think God intends for you to use your talents by harrassing people on the internet using one verse. Most of Christianity does not meet your standards of worship when you use such a narrow definition.
Your view on worship reminds me of the legalism of the pharisees. Seriously, use your time better bro.

Harassing? It's called contending for the faith. Also, it is amazing how those who are not holding to the Biblical pattern of worship and are ignorant to church history use the terms "pharisee" and "legalist" as a club against those who strive to mirror their lives per the Word and not the changing times and man's pattern NOT God's.You do well to study Church history & the Word for herein you would learn a lot and see that what I write has been taught for centuries by God's faithful ministers.
I dont really like the version of the song, but you cant condemn it because of Col. 3:16. "I sing the mighty power of God" was written long after that verse was written. Isaac Watts, who wrote the song, was persecuted at that time because people said he was sinning for paraphrasing the scriptures. It's the same words, so is it a sinful melody?
I heard them singing this song this morning when I went to visit for the first time. It was actually kind of nice although a bit grungy, not really my style. A girl was singing it and playing the piano. She was really good.
You're aware that David, in song, asks God to damn his enemies, right? There is no such thing as worship music, there are only hearts that worship God. Consider the heart of these men at Mars Hill Church.
I am not accusing you of being incorrect, but I wish to know how you claim to know this. Certainly the poetry of their words is depressed and minor, but in a minor key is another thing...
@sorenkierkegaard2008 actually the musical system we use now was invented by the greeks, so it doesnt really matter what key, or whether its minor or major, or 9th diminished.
this is just horrible i wanted the nice, peaceful original song and not a world point of it... im disapointed

Pretty cool, they took the original major melody and put it in a minor scale. Smart.
