Michaelangelo eloquently expresses his artistic conflict in evey twist and turn in the limbs and positioning of the figures. Also the tug of war between the physical and the spiritual, the modern and the ancient. The pieta is like a snapshot in modern time, but the primitive half finished state reflects the ancient art of summoning the "spirit" from the stone. Along with the sobriety there is a sweetness between mother and son that is profoundly touching. Great musical choice!
I think that the 'Pietà' of Florence is not one of the best works of Michelangelo but is, nevertheless, an interesting work because hi made it in his old age and it demonstrate the inner torment of this great artist...This 'Pietà' seems almost a work of contemporary art...(albeit high-level)
Michelangelo,Palestrina...nostalgia di un'Italia che è stata e che non sarà più.

You are absolutely right ! It has a roughly hewn, unfinished, 'contemporary', 'art in progress' quality that makes it disconcerting.
Beautiful sepia view over Florence at 0.25 though.

Not the usual Michelangelo but it's always nice to imagine oneself in Florence...
