When this album dropped 2x5 got overlooked, since it was the Double Sextet that won the Pulitzer. The truth is that this is just an ingenious piece, and critical attention will come around to see it sooner or later.
@mmpalha the drummer is David Cossin, and he most certainly doesn't need practice for this piece. I've seen him do it totally live with another member of BOAC, and he was flawless.
I'm not very educated in terms of music theory or even music history for that matter. But I believe the mere existence of atonal music means that music doesn't always need an emotional melodic line to reach a person? Or twelve tone music? I mean, I've been playing the guitar for only 8 years, but I've grown to love this sort of music and it does move me in a strange way. I think I relate to and admire Steve Reich's ideas most in music. And I'm not the usual technical, shredding player.
I personally wouldn't banter the word "masterpiece" around loosely either, I've painted for 30 years straight, I've "maybe" consider one or two of my works close to a "masterpiece". They take an enormous amount of energy and application, usually quite zen and yet incredibly pregnant with microcosmic elements. What Steve Reich may be hinting at can also be done in art, limited palette with multiple visual applications , very difficult and not always successful, microcosm within macrocosm.
I'll be honest great technical piece, but I'm yawning half way through, "emotion" is missing, deep emotion is connected to contemporary sociological issues.adds "life" to music, just like art. This emotional connection can only come from deep suffering/personal loss ect, hence an opening is created connecting to others. African Americans have driven the U.S. music sceneWhether it's anger, grief, loss etc, all the "emotion" must be there, the feeling, if there is technical+ emotion, better? IMHO
@amistrymister I agree: the production on the released version is too lifeless. They should have let a rock producer deal with it. Steve Albini would have nailed it.
Between 0:08 and 0:18 he's telling something, about somebody playing some intrument. But I can't make up what he's saying, which instrument is he talking about?
@bobvanluijt He's talking about gamelan music. He says "Balinese Gamelan". It's really cool music, traditional to Indonesia. You should look into it if you like the sound of this (though it doesn't use rock instrumentation, of course).
@buenobus a lot of 2x5 is actually in 6/8, 2/4, 5/8, 7/8, 5/8 bar phrasing. When its in 3/2 (not 3/4), I think newer stuff from Reich comes through when he stays in 3 rather than changing time signatures similar to Double Sextet. And Music for 18 Musicians is in 6/4=3/2. It just wouldn't be the same if it was in boring old 3/4 ugh.
this piece of music is just as fresh as a juvenile reich composition, with on top the joy of living and the experience of a mature musician: great steve reich strikes a great hit innovating himself in a brand new inspirational composition. I love this!
I'm only going on what Steve Reich told me the last time I met him. I can't think of any reason they wouldn't be released together. He also said he was thinking of putting the next release on itunes store before putting out the physical release.
YOU MET HIM?! Wow most people who comment on youtube videos are naive idiots; anyone who has met Reich is not one of them. Iam sorry haha. Really? Before an actual release? Interesting. I've seen Steve Reich, from about a distance of 100 metres, but that was about it. never met him. you lucky person! thanks!

@amistrymister i believe he is a good drummer, it just seemed to be lacking that "in the pocket" feel in this performance!

It's funny...Phillip Glass is a household name and establishment darling but Steve Reich is the genius,
Steve has written a 100 masterpieces but Glass has written one piece a hundred times!
