Better dust :

add food coloring to a cup of water, count drops until it is the Desired color, then add that much 3 more times (4-5 times if you're going for blue for any reason)

Mix it into 2 cups of flour from the kitchen.

Crush it down and sift it after it dries. Easy to dispose of, and can be any color you need.

I've been using this for my new film. Has been working very well (even though today was the first time I saw this video and I've been working on the film the last 4 months and completely guessed when I came up with it). Tip for grenade explosions:

If you want to use this often the compressed air cans can get sort of expensive and for me at least, they don't pack much psi. To make something look explosive, having that instantaneous release of relatively high pressure (20 or 30 psi) can make a big difference. Personally, I'd recommend building a small PVC cylinder and using a steel ball valve or a solenoid valve to release the pressure into the aquarium tubing. You could charge it with a bike pump too if you fit it with a tire valve.

Would this work with a regular fake blood hit? You know not dust but the old fashioned corn syrup, water, and red food coloring. You also might want to come up with a way to have more chalk/dust material in it so you don't have to refill after every hit.

we get it, everyone misses erik. But you cant do the same thing forever. erik is moving to other projects and he's still around. Unless the test film is more than three minutes then I think you should just include it with the video like it was done before. The test film trailer is not useful unless the test film is too long to fit in the main video. The trailer should be of the effect no a random part that has nothing to do with it.

I rather do this kind of effects in post, but if you don't have the money to pay for pre keyed assets (or don't want to download them illegally), this is a great way to do it. I think the dust in opposite to blood splatter is really starting to being adopted as a standard in action flicks. In real life, when you are hit by a bullet, there's no splatter of any kind, no dust nor blood (well, depending on where you get shot, the size of the bullet, or if there is an exit wound or not).
