Her father abandoned her, her mother made feel ugly and forced her to bring home money and food by making her date Nazis and Greek soldiers during the occupation of Greece. Her mother also made sure she got good vocal training.
@Ksanthipa Answer: People interested in her rags-to-riches journey. And those who care for the person behind the singer. In other words, real human beings.
@bigjoetube Various rumours spread about her weight loss method; one had her swallowing a tapeworm, while Rome's Pantanella Mills pasta company claimed she lost weight by eating their "physiologic pasta", prompting Callas to file a lawsuit. Callas stated that she lost the weight by eating a sensible low-calorie diet of mainly salads and chicken.
@Trillidotia Are you an Italian linguist? FYI, among a myriad of other features, LA DIVINA succeded in conquering Italian audiences due to her Italian native-like accent.
@Trillidotia Her voice began to decline in the late 50's, this was three years before her death. Her earlier recorded singing of O mio babbino caro is the highest rated on youtube. She was that good.
Why don't you listen to this:.youtube.com/watch?v=uTOKnM0lDnE&feature=related to see the same woman singing same aria. with a terible performances. Take off the mics, amplifiers and speakers and she is finished. That's why she never sung on the stages of opera houses with no electronics attached more then three times in her life. Is this a sopranos. Which is better that child Jackie Evenko or this american greek girl Maria? Sorry guys, no intention to offend anyone, so don't curse me!
I absolutely love dramatic sopranos. My professor at U of MN who is my voice teacher is also a dramatic. I envy and feel privileged to be even considered her student.
I am sorry but i don't think she is the Best. I think she was beautiful and a good entertainer but personally her voice doesn't touch me the way Charlotte Church's does.
They say she lost her voice in her later years, but it was never really perfect, far from it. She had what some people would call an 'ugly' voice, but it is the most beautiful and heart-wrenching voice ever to be graced upon this Earth... The fact that her voice was imperfect made her so unique, it makes you believe every single word that she sings, it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on end, this is what makes Maria Callas so perfect and irreplaceable and just, Maria Callas...
@jjj29871 Well said. Callas doesn't sing pretty notes. Her voice pulls at your heart making those who appreciate her think that she is the character in the song. That is her magic.
@bb1111116 Couldn't agree more! It's the imperfections in Callas' voice which make it heart-wrenching and soulful, which makes you believe every single word that she sings!
@bb1111116 Thanks. It is the imperfections that make it so brilliant. That make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. That is why she is so perfect...
@jjj29871 Beautifully stated and totally correct. No soprano ever personified the Italian expression "Opera is Life" more than Maria Callas did and she pulls you into each role she sang.
@dlphcoracl Thanks! As Giuseppe di Stefano said on 'Callas', Maria wanted to be a woman born with a voice, not a voice with a woman. And this was the 'fight she lost', to find true love and to put opera second, and however hard she tried, her love always failed, and the opera always seemed a much more important part of her, which she never really wanted...
to be honest, i didn't use to think opera was a beautiful form of art however, since i learned italian and can understand what they are actually singing... my god, i feel like i missed out on some time of lottery.. this is incredible... :)
They always said, she was far past her prime in 1974. May be, but a past-her-prime-Callas still had more expression than some modern divas at her peak. For example Callas was the first for me who revealed the inner meaning of this beautiful Puccini-masterpiece, word by word. See Di Stefano in YouTube-videos of 1994 - what a personality! Where are all these great personalities of opera gone?
I still don't like her voice on many of her songs, but I'm singing this and I am really crappy at facial expressions. She definitely has the best facial expressions out of all that I've seen so far.
Its fascinating to compare this performance of the aria with the pretty awful rendition at the opening concert of the series in London some months earlier. The voice by the time they got to Tokyo had strengthened and had more colour - and she was it seems more confident. Everyone seems to judge those concerts on the early ones - by the end she had recaptured some of the magic - what a tragedy she didnt continue and return to the operatic stage. Many thanks
@esclamonde Oh my goodness, you are soooo right! But Callas always had and always will have a controversial voice. I love La Divina though - in fact, I love her London version of "O Mio Babbino Caro" because her drama/feeling/emotion shines through even when her voice is not what it used to be.

For sopranos, Callas' rendition of an aria sets the bar not just too high but completely out of reach. For example, once you hear her "O mio babbino caro" or "Una voce poco fa," all other versions are disappointing; some other versions are fantastic, but always just a little bit disappointing in comparison.
@muatlas Thank you for your honest coment about the most accomplished female soprano that ever lived. Bravo per sempre Maria Callas!! Her renditions are remarkable!
In the fifthies she was absolute the greatest soprano ever. In the beginning of the sixties she lost her voice. This video from 1974 is absolute terible. Everyone can hear that. Where were at that time her "friends" who had to say to her: Maria, dont do this. But Maria was at that time already the greatest legend of opera ! And that she is now...The BBc is right.
@qklq42 Terrible? Nope Sorry.....that would be charlotte church trying to sing classical today or sara brightman trying to sing opera. Past her prime, sure..but she captures some of the magic of past years here...the voice is stronger than it had been in months.
Callas’ life fate will always break my heard apart, so great and yet so frail. What hurts more of her fall from grace and her physical death is that there is no place on earth where we can venerate her life and her art. She is lost for us. There are no remains of her life, neither a grave to visit her and pray for her. She is legend, she was the pinnacle, Maria was a divine gift for us that will not return. She is such a profound mystery.
OMG...how can anyone...ever...EVER...deny this woman the right to be the absolute BEST soprano singer of opera ever...EVER!!!!!!?????? exquisite...alluring...demanding..passionate...and GOD GIVEN GORGEOUS!
She is really good. But I believe there were better performers than her. She became so well-known because of the right oportunities at the right time! (money & publicity - Onasis relationship)
Do you have to print the foul words with a artist of this calibre don't listen if you don't like the rendition she offers you really do belittle yourself as an educated fool! Bert Cornell
Do you believe everything you read? The sordid stories of Ms. Callas' preferences are the jealous assertions of a spurned husband, Aristotle Onasis and his new sex object, Jacky Kennedy.
Ms. Callas public life was demure and almost old-fashioned compared to the in your face, nasty ghetto/jail inspired trash performers, (notice I didn't write artist), of the last 40 years till today.
shirly961, What do you think of her interpretation? Does she emote, phrase and deliver the composers wishes for the best possible performance in the hopes of touching, moving and inspiring the human heart for the Greater Good? Is her timing impeccable? Does her work compliment the the music underlying the performance? Did she awaken some quality in you that was dormant?
These are few civil and creatively relevant questions regarding this specific artists' performance. FYI
Shirly961. Rename yourself `shit really` and you`ll probably come pretty close to what`s inside of your head. Sad, and I suspect, inadequate no-pals person.
We don't want to hear the painful high notes of Callas. It has always been difficult to appreciate Callas and now we have found a divine perfection such as Anna Netrebko.
What is wrong with you guys!? She was one of the greatest singers the world has ever had. She was past her prime at this time, but she deserves respect! She still had wonderful expression.
Yes, she sings like a donkey, and squealed on the high notes.... but she is Callas. She is the one and only Callas. She is THE singer. If you don't understand, or agree, buy a cd, and listen to until you hear it :) Callas forever! :)
@Horseshoe4441 No, she doesn't squeal. She sings here like an ordinary singer and not like La Divina as she used to. However, even here she is much better than many of today's singers. Morever, this moment has to be taken as it really was. Here we are in 1974, she is 51 years old, has behind a unique career, over for many years, and this was her last tour which she really needed for her own balance. The audience is cheering La Callas, not this particular performance. So should we...
simplemente la mejor !!! , no hay ni habra nadie como ella , cada vez que la escucho cantar me despierta una emocion que solo ella logra aun muerta en todos aquellos que la admiran y siempre la admiraran
Thank you for posting this video!!. I agree Maria Callas' version of this song is simply the best. Her voice is pure and powerfull and she will be remembered as the best soprano ever.
such a lovely quote...same can be said for those that love all humans on the planet. Is that words of your own or where did you get them? Much love to you bro
INCREDIBLE...even if this tour was not succesfful for some people ut still she does a great job...even after all she has been thru her voice is still that LIGHtHOUSE of OPERA...!!! BRAVO!
I had heard that Callas ended her sad 1974 tour with a voice in much better shape than the beginning, proving that she needed confidence, public's affection and excercise most of all. This Tokio performance proves it. It is not bad at all, even if just the shade of the goddess she had been. Still, it's 100%Callas. There won't be one again...
it doesnt matter if she "lost her voice in the last years". What matters is that all the tragic events in her life made her a true opera singer, struggling to keep the tears. BRAVO!
one of a kind! Callas is unique!

Callas is better than Britney Spears but NOT AS GOOD AS NETREBKO.
Horseshoe4441 2 years ago
Netrebko will never obtain the artistry, nor the class that Callas had.

@Horseshoe4441 if you just like high notes you should move next to the train station

Thank you for posting this video!!. I agree Maria Callas' version of this song is simply the best. Her voice is pure and powerfull and she will be remembered as the best soprano ever.

It's my own words, just something I thought. I listen to a lot of music and it seems to be true of most of my favourite artists.

BRAVO!
vivianerojas 2 years ago 4
what mattters are the tragic events in her life?
OMG ... no. She lost her voice and we still love her, but she faced it, and so must we.
