What a rubbish example of an 'ordinary' family that was! Only well-heeled people had houses that big to be able to take such flimsy precautions. As for the rest of us living on crappy council estates at the time, I guess the advice would have simply been "Put your heads between your legs and kiss your arses goodbye - you're all about to fry!"
