is it because hes left handed he was running to the left? jaya saw sanga running to the left, but sanga was looking at the ball... from the reply it looks like it's Jayasuriya fault
@jutforever How on earth is K.S is the best batsman ever produced. He is way behind, Sanath, Aravinda, and even may be Arjuna. There is more to a batsmen than stats!
@adee849160 Sanath was a master of ODI cricket (but not tests). Aravinda and Sanga are very close in terms of greatness, however do not forget Sanga's propensity to making big test hundreds (i think 8 double centuries) and a recent 100 that sealed our first win in SA. Arjuna...had a fighting spirit, was a very good and aggressive captain - but lacked the stamina.
@jutforeverNow you are just talking like Geoff Boycot when it comes to Sanath. In his prime(96-98)we only played like 6 test matches and he scored the most magnificent and elegant test double a SL batsman has ever scored in Kennington Oval and 365 vs India in 97 and 115 vs Australia in 95 before the 96 world Cup. All played as a part time cricketer on a 3000 rupee salary. You have lot to learn young friend. Obviously you haven't seen much of Sanath and Arjuna live on the test field.
@adee849160 Sanath was a good test batsman but not a great. Think back to the last ten years where he was shuffled up and down the order, searching for a number where the selectors thought he could score some runs. Then think about players like Ponting, who had no send off match even though he was a greater batsman than Sanath, who had roughly 2 years of 'send-off cricket'. Sanath should have given opportunities to youngsters. If he was not an MP then he would have been dropped.
@jutforever Sanath retired in 2007 from tests and was the best batsmen we had in the 07 world cup and pretty good at 09 T20. Which youngsters should have replaced him at the time? Also you have completely missed my point. Since you are obsessed with stats and calls Aravinda a great and Sanath not so great go to Cricinfo and compare their(Test)stats and also keep in mind he started his career as a bowler, 420 int wick and it took a decade for people to understand his style of batting.
@adee849160 Plenty of youngsters were coming through the system, seeing as Sanath was moved up and down the order-he took the spots of Vandort, Kapugedera etc. I am correct - Sanath was not a great TEST batsman. He was a great ALL-ROUNDER, but Sangakkara has been the most consistent batsmen for us in any conditions. It did not take 'a decade' for people to understand his batting, he was a pinch-hitter (spinning all rounder) and is not as technically sound as Sanga.
@jutforever Are you serious man! How on earth is Kapugedara and Vandot are better replacements for Sanath. He went up and down the order in very few games in late 2010 and just may be less than 10 games before he retired from ODI's. How can you criticize him based on his last 6 months on the field. Sanga him self said Sanath is the most gifted batsmen (without refinement) he has ever seen and the batsmen he would pay to see any day over any other batsmen. A match winning cricketer!
@adee849160 They weren't given a chance because of Sanath! Kapugedera is now in the team so that says something as well. Definitely a match winning cricketer, but still Sanga is the greatest batsman we have produced hands down.
@jutforever Simply Disagree! Speak for your self, Sana is a better batsmen for me and Sanga. 10 years from now it will be Sanath's innings that people will remember and will want to re watch!
@adee849160 Whilst Sanath was an explosive batsman, Sanga will be remembered for his elegance at the crease and his superb technique. Sanga is the most consistent batsman for us in all three formats, and he keeps on top of that!
J'ya was needlessly run out for 99 in 83 balls. The end result: SL lost the game & were eliminated from the VB series finals 2002-2003 despite S'kara making a 50 which was only a slow affair in a game which demanded some faster scoring. What a familiar story.
I remember watching this live and pulling my hair out. And today we lost the CB series final to Aussies. :sigh:

Even as an Aussie, Sanath was my all time favourite player. I was at this game and was speechless all night after this. Shattered.
