@mdryeti Flemish and Dutch are the same language. With Flemish, one means the Dutch spoken in Belgium. It's a bit like Québécois and French or Australian and English. Since Brel is Belgian you could say it's Flemish but the correct name would be Dutch. I know it is confusing and even in Belgium people constantly mix 'Flemish' and 'Dutch'.

From what I read it really is a language though. The French elite and France denounced it as a dialect in order to get, in the case of the elite, Belgium French speaking and under their control and to take away power from the Flemish. France did it with the hope of annexxating Belgium at a later stage. Plus it's FR's language policy

It's great to hear him sing in Flemish and French. Does anyone know if he also sang in purely Belgian languages? Meaning Walloon and Flemish, and maybe even some German (if that is a Belgian language?)? That which you call flemish or walloon is nothing but dutch or french with a local accent, just like english in wales is different from english in scotland (not paying attention to gaelic). Brel had a very good french pronunciation, he liked to sing with a tiny brussels accent though. His dutch is rather good, though you can clearly hear it's not his mothertongue and therefor he has "french" accent in it, just like when a french person speaks english.

Saying Flemish is not a language because there are strong variations of it is wrong, in my opinion. I think most languages have that, albeit probably not as strong. I'd say you could listen to how folks talk on Flemish television and consider that a Flemish that has little to do with any of the dialects.

I have to admit, I've only been listening to the late great Jacques Brel, for 2 months, and enjoy a mjority of the songs he wrote, and in all honesty, no one will have the intensity he had when he sang a song, although I have no idea what he's singing about, I consider him, to be the greatest song writer of all time, I'm sure 100's do also, But isn't it heartbreaking when it sounds like he would just rush through great songs? The same applies for German-Austrian, Austrian is not a language but a set of German varieties spoken in Austria.

His French is flawless when he wants it to be....Listen to Port Amsterdam- he uses a thick Flemish .accent in that marvelous poem.....he is a poet, the songs are incidental. Between Brugge and Ghent, the towers....that's his home..... It would be wonderful to see this kind of passion again....

Pendant mon enfance, dans les années60-70, nous flamands de France, tournions le dos à nos racines flamandes. Ca n'est plus le cas maintenant et j'ai eu plaisir à lire récemment dans un village, les noms des voies en français et en flamands.
