  • it's still called suburban rail, not subway. Tokyo Metro and Toei for example is subway, but JR, Keisei, Keikyu etc. is suburban rail and this is like JR, not like Tokyo Metro or Toei.

  • this is NOT a subway !!

right expression: urban-suburban commuter railway system

  • It's common for foreigners to mistake the "S" for Subway, especially when they run underground. Who can blame them. In Munich there are only few underground stations that the S-Bahn network shares, as well as some U-Bahn services that run above ground, like the U6 to Garching.

However, here in Sydney most stations run overland, and both Subway and Suburban trains share them. A large portion of subways in New York run on elevated tracks as well.

  • on the train its written "S-Bahn München" Its for the agglomeration of München/Munich and in the agglomeration Rhein-Ruhr the S-Bahn drives through many cities of the agglomeration you can drive from dortmund to düsseldorf with this train but noone really does because it takes so much time...

and the subways are held by every city on their own

some drive into the next city around them but not as far as the S Bahn...

    per example

you can drive with the subway from düsseldorf to duisburg...

  • @arikunisch No you can't, because there isno subway neigther in Düsseldorf nor in Duisburg. These are premetros. Real subways in Germany are only the systems in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Nürnberg.

  • Not subway, S-bahn

  • Ha. S-Bahn is short for "Stadtschnellbahn" in German. It's not the subway, the subway systems are called U-Bahns. U-Bahn is short for Untergundbahn.

  • Very nice! 5*

  • Danke

  • Subruban Rail = S bahn?

Anyway, in Japan, Subway is running over ground, sometime.

  • exactly. this here is the suburban not the undergound.

  • No it was runing undergraound... around west central station.

  • still it is the suburban train... see the (S) logo on the train. connects munich to the outer districts. the suburban travels inside munich or hamburg etc. also underground to save space! but the stations are farther apart then at the real underground trains.

  • @cherryprmc

OK, but this is just a suburban service running underground, or below the street level (S-Bahn).

It is not part of the official subway/metro service (U-Bahn)...

  • @cherryprmc yeah it's running underground...^^ bit it's the suburban train...^^ munich suburban trains are going under surface for the town center... the underground ist most of the time in the underground... the suburban is most of the time above...^^

  • Comment removed

  • @cherryprmc yes thats right

and in some citys they also drive "under the earth" when theyre in the inner city...

S bahn trains stop oftener than regional trains and are only used in an agglomeration... but they usually dont stop as often as subway trains and have their own rails...

the S bahn is kept by the state and the subways are kept by the city or the agglomeration ^^

S Bahn is "stästische bahn" what can be translated as "urban train"

  • S-Bahn not subway lol

  • But in my country, sometime, Subway is running over ground....

  • @cherryprmc

Underground or overground, both its possible Subway (Metro, subway, u-bahn) operation. Some Countries have overground metro system or underground tramway system. I think for classification priority : 1.capacity, 2.average speed, 3.station distances and others

  • @cherryprmc the real subway in munich is over ground too. for example at fröttmaning.

  • @cherryprmc das is trotzdem eine s-bahn steht doch dran!

  • @cherryprmc This is a suburban train. We in Germany call it 'S-Bahn'. "S" stands for the german word 'schnell' which means 'fast". And "Bahn" means train in german.

  • This is the S-Bahn, not the subway.

  • I though it was running under ground...

  • Comment removed

  • das ist die s-bahn

  • danke!

  • sega, Thank you. But both are same for me. ;)

  • This is the S-Bahn, not the subway.

  • Thanks, but Both are same for me.... ;)

  • It's actually a light rail that links the suburbs to the city.

    S-Bahn=Suburban rail

    U-Bahn=Underground rail

    The U-Bahn is THE subway.

  • perfect! I understand well!!

  • The S-Bahn or Suburban Rail is considered a full heavy rail, hence why it's run in Germany under the railway regulations of the EBO (Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsordnung).

The U-Bahn, aka subway, metro, tube etc., is legally considered a tram, that has no level crossings with pedestrians, and any other means of transportation. It is run in Germany under the BOStrab (Verordnung über den Bau und Betrieb der Straßenbahnen), just like any other tram.

  • UhmmmI understand...

  • halb so wild hahaha

  • That wasn't the subway. ;-)

  • ??? Wasn't it?

  • Nope - the "subway" is only the U-bahn system, which is completely seperate to the system you've shown here.

The system here is the "S-bahn" a sort of very high frequency commuter rail. :)
