'Cross that I bare' is an expression meaning 'this thing I have to put up with constantly' and 'puts hair on my chest' is another expression usually applied to spices meaning that the endurance (putting up with) of it makes you a better man.

You could look at it like that, or that it was just a half joke that rhymed and fit. I prefer the latter.
