@MITKONH098 Because the functional group being made is an ether (C-O-R) - not an ester (COOR). An ester would be made by reacting an alcohol with a carboxylic acid - but ethers have to be made as explained in the video.
@thechemist144 Thanks a lot for this. For any students out there, can I really recommend ChemSpider (made by the Royal Society of Chemistry). It is a great source of information on all kinds of chemical information and fantastic for supporting independent learning.
Looking at this stuff again, it is a LOT LOT easier to comprehend for me now. My arrows kept going all over the place. Word of warning, you'll end up shouting at the screen. Also why in a LOT of organic reactions there is another group to specifically "dump the h" to get the reaction going. Thanks Professor Dave, I haven't lost my touch (even thought I have been out the lab for 2 years!!)
