Take Five: a primeira música de jazz que ouvi. Tinha 13 anos. Me encantou. Depois, Paul Desmond respondeu com Take Ten. Procurem ouvir. DEMAIS!!!!!!!!!
@ChocolatePheonix You didn't hear TAKE FIVE until a few years ago? I won't ask how old you are, since that's a rude question. Your comment got my attention, though, since I remember the music from my childhood. Whoa! That really dates a person, doesn't it?
@1960peaches29 That's right; I'm still in highschool, so I'm not really accustom to this kind of music - my parents don't/didn't really listen to it, so I didn't get to hear it until we played it for my first year in jazz band. The stuff's way before my time, but I appreciate more than the music of mine. :)
This was about the time I went to see him. A man I considered a friend flew down to take me to the concert and then afterwards proposed to me. I said no and literally ran out of the room. The concert was great -- the rest of the evening was not.
@Ocantus Too bad I didn't think of saying that... instead I was so shocked to hear a proposal from a man I barely knew that I stammered and stuttered and then said a quick goodbye and left. I was a young 18 year old and he was 25.
@cuckovic I like how the diskile bar disapears when less than 1/100th of the people disliked, its like "yeah, there are dislikes, but who cares, 1/100th is zero" :D
@cuckovic Yes ... i'm totally ... agree ... Dave Brubeck ^^ ..... pffffff qulle musique ....
@cuckovic They don't have to disable the dislike button. Sure, there are a few people who won't care for the video, if it isn't their thing. Look at the votes which have been cast so far, though. If anything, we're wearing out the thumbs up button. This reminds me of a car my father drove during the early 1970s. The car was durable, and eventually the odometer reached the limit and returned to zero. By the time the car broke down altogether, the odometer read approx. 300 miles.
I Love This.......NOONE should click "Dislike" for this, they should just go back to listening to Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga or whatever and stick their heads back up their asses where it belongs.....NAZI's
I could just imagine at their concerts. The only thing Dave Brubeck would say is "Gentlemen!!!.....Take 5" and without skipping a heartbeat, they start the song live. :D
Taste is a funny thing! I cannot imagine anyone actively disliking this wonderful little piece of music, regardless of what else they might like or dislike. Indeed, I would have serious misgivings about anyone who actually did dislike it ... in the same way I would have doubts about someone who really disliked a little kitten. Such people surely bear watching! ;-)
There once was this cat down the alley that loved all the chicks from the valley but mostly Sally so off down the streets they'd dilly dally past so many countless bars too hard to tally to the dumpster on the docks for naval galleys they'd eat the treats in the streets by Thee Bay in Cali as they'd hear "Chili Today, Hot Tamale!
I think it's weird that teenagers insult each other because of their music taste. I'm a 15 year old girl and I listen to jazz. So what? Just leave me alone for gods sake I'm listening to one of the greatest genre of all time.
I saw them, as a 20-year old, on a British tour in about 1961 with the fabulous singer Carmen McCrae. I sat and listened, and suddenly it all clicked in my mind.
I have been hooked on Jazz ever since. - Thank you Dave, for a gift beyond price.
Thanks also to TheSarge5445 for uploading it.
Tragic that the genius Paul Desmond died so young.
Brubeck said that the group originally (circa 1962) had trouble playing in 5/4, but even then it was easy for a choral singer - just think a 3/4 bar followed immediately by a 2/4 bar, take out the bar line, and keep repeating. I have sung all his oratorios, including the first performance of "Tongues of Fire" in Cincinnati, 1985, where he was revising the score up to the last rehearsal. Text compiled from scripture by wife Iola have burned them into my soul; I still regret not telling him.
@bradleyjgreene It has something to do with democracy, taste, education, age, hometown, neighbours, language, feelings, sex. In fact with everything. And when some people say I don t like this,it is just because they had never the pleaure to enjoy this kind of musik in the right place at the right time. Discover and it will make your life brighter.
Dave Brubeck's been a fairly divisive figure in jazz from the get-go. The jazz establishment resented how his cool, intellectual, style of jazz was ravenously embraced on college campuses where the boppers, and post-boppers were largely ignored. His success at selling records didn't help matters. Even in the 90s, Steve Malkmus cited Brubeck as ruining jazz.
That aside, he's one of my favorites, and "Take Five" ranks among the best jazz songs
Paul Desmond technically is credited with writing this. But only the main theme. It was a collaboration between Desmond and Brubeck. And because this is Jazz, each time they play this each musician is rewriting this piece. The same song is never performed twice. That is the sign of mastery.
a lot of jazz tunes have the same structure as the first movement in a symphony: A - B - A -- statement of a theme, development of the theme (read: improvisation), then restatement of the theme -- and even Bach and other composers would include a blank section where the lead violinist or other musician would be allowed to improvise - not so different, it's just that many symphonies are the same every performance, and the jazz piece is always to a large extent uniquely original - like 'em both -
This is a different version that the hit record of long ago, but it's still good. Admittedly, he was a big influence on my sax playing -- his tone is soft without an edge. Love it!
This is the best version ever of Take 5. I love the moment in 2:20 when David starts playing along Paul's solo and Paul softens a bit and David smiles. Priceless.

This song makes me think of a guy in a black tux standing under the shadows the Eiffel tower while a group of rich people are having an outside dance. At around 0:25 he comes out, picks the most beautiful woman there and starts to dance with her while everyone else is in the background looking and the woman is stunned by the character's smoothness.
