i just looked at all the comments and for all your info guys. i actually got saved by this very dog when i had a surfing accident in sennen and came off my board. this dog new exactly where to go and if it wasnt for this dog. i would of drowned.
Um, AntiNoisyBastards, Bilbo is a Newfoundland dog, a well recognised and documented breed. They come in Black, Black with white, White with black markings and BROWN!
I keep noofs and do a lot of water rescue training with them and we have all of the above colours. You even see them in gray occasionally.
I saw this dog in action on Sennen beach during me summer hols. He rescued a cuttlefish! Unfortunately, despite the lifeguards' efforts to revive the poor creature by placing it back in the sea - it died. Still, it shows Bilbo is a natural.
This is correct moxieownage, these bilbos really can talk! They say: woof! And this could be interpreted to mean: the public should not swim when the sea is rough, or even: Do we really need a risk assessment on doggy-paddle sea rescue modus operandi? Or sometimes they might say: woof! That means: Wheres me dinner?
He's a fine dog, but for information, bilbos' are not a recognised breed, the dog in the video is probably a St Bernard/poodle cross. And thinking about it - the St Bernard would have to be the dad. The best dogs for water rescue are actually Newfoundlands because they have webbed feet and are very powerful swimmers.
Met this dog last week on Sennen beach with owner looking remarkably hardy in shorts and bare legs. Lovely dog, though my dog wasn't too enamoured LOL
Are the RNLI mad???? If they cant see that he is a working dog and a huge asset they want their heads banging together! I will miss seeing Bilbo, what a sad day for common sense.
Heard he's been sacked - that's a f***g disgrace. It's not like they're paying him or anything, and Newfies are very reliable and tougher than any human lifeguard. So what if he can't do CPR - he doesn't patrol the beach by himself!
i have met bilbo he rocks he is really big apperantly his latest victory was saving someone from going into a rip b y standing on their feet! he had to show the person how strong it was by going in him self
I've met this dog!!!!!

It be worth having a dog like that just to get a chance to reach the public and explain safety in the water.

OK very nice - but what does the dog actually do? Swam towards "drowning" man, got to within a few feet and then swam away. Sorry, don't get it!
ROD1945 4 years ago
He's trying to manoevre the float he drags behind him to the "drowning" man - it would be more clear if I had kept videoing a bit longer!
robasher 4 years ago
Oh, that's all right then. I thought he had been trained to recognise Emmits & act accordingly.
