I remember him, when he was trying to sing Faust in Lubeck (1973 ?) and I felt so sorry for him, as he was trying to sing a role that did not fit his voice and was very scare at the aria, as he had no high C and only way to do it was in falsetto, but was very unhappy, later on he went to Wuppertal where he began his big career as a Wagnerian tenor, -even if his voice was too lyric, but his looks was the big plus. A very nice person and I will remember him as that and a very good singer. C.M.
Still the best looking Lohengrin ever: Peter Hofmann. Although Jonas Kaufmann is very handsome as well. Hofmann not only looks great, he was one of the leading Wagner-tenors of his time. Too bad his career was cut short by illness.
I am very sad that Peter has died, his wonderful voice will live on, and I never forget the performance he gave in San Francisco as Lohengrin. My condolence goes to his wife, daughter and ex-wife.
What a gorgeous man, the perfect Wagnerian. I am sure that Peter was just what Wagner imagined when he wrote his operas. I saw him many times when he was in his prime. So sad that he suffered for so long. Condolences to his family. R.I.P. Peter.
Englishtenor, you second grade! Yes, that WAS P.H. who is gone from us now (alas too soon!
However your stupid comparisons remain here with us. Who gives a shit whom he looked like. He was a PERFECT Lohengrin, blonde and ARYAN, like LHGR should be, with a magnifient tenor voice, which he used to enchance the audience in Musicals and ROCK. I've never saw him on stage or worked with him in operas, however I've respected him.
peter the best. did he sell his name to jonas kaufmann? so good all of them . but capitalism is'n art. but money and fame. just as wagner told. namless shame.k
He does not live in poverty. He has a wife and a little girl. Yes he is very ill, but he has people, including ex-wife (Deborah Sasson, an accomplished singer) who care about him.
Un lohengrin de rêve, un Siegmund de rêve, le type même du héros parfait en beauté, en tenue, en voix,et malheureux....dans la vie comme dans le rôle....Peter, je ne vous oublie pas!
Englishtenor, where have you been? And why the comparising? Peter was the perfect Lohengrin, I saw him in San Francisco singing this part, and the audience was stunned, me included. There was no one who personified the typical Germanic hero than Peter with his perfect looks. Now he is a sick man and dealing with a cruel illness. I'll never forget the joy he brought so many years ago.

Let me say - there are many GOOD Lohengrin's, Domingo, Kaufmann included.
The PERFECT Lohengrin, however, is Peter Hofmann.
A very beautiful rendition here. Bravo!

@SuperHenrion
You might want to just write to him and send it to the town of
95632 Wunsiedel/Germany, he lives around there. Maybe they will forward it.

yes, it's him.
He suffers Parkinson (and Demencia) and lives in absolute poverty. What a shame. He was so great.

It is! This "Lohengrin" was performed in 1982 with Karan Armstrong as Elsa. The most beautiful "In fernem Land" I´ve ever heard!
