So if the cop is speeding high well above the posted limit with no lights on and by accident hits someone in the same lane as him then what? Is he justified for his speeding? He obviously has no reason for it. He should be doing the same speed as everyone else unless he is called then he should have his lights on so everyone gets out of his way and no one gets hurt. Well put wolf9walker, as an officer myself it is not uncommon to go to higher priority calls without lights and sirens. Sometimes people freeze and don't know what to do, or do something really weird and cause accidents. Also if there are two or more units responding at a higher speed it usually means a higher priority call.

Interesting side note about SA traffic law, following a traffic officer who is exceeding the speed limit without his lights and sirens being on means the officer cannot ticket you for speeding, his actions "leagalize" the speed he travels at, it's a great way to cover distance quickly and I have used it to my advantage in the past.

On the other hand a traffic officer operating a speed trap can write a speeding ticket for any one he catches,

Its not about them deeming it safe to break the law by speeding. if you were on an open motorway with no other cars you are still not allowed to pass 70mph it is illegal. So for the police to be speeding without using sirens or lights is illegal. Plus they are on a busy motorway so how is it safe.
