about the sweeds at narva they could not win. they were to badly equipt and the russian army had grown from the first battles in the great war. When the battle began the swedish lines got in to kaoz and the swedish cavelry never even showd.

Narva is historically an old Hansa city. Before WW2 mainly populated with Estonians, like also another side of river Narva(part of Ingria). During the WW2 city was heavily bombarded(basically ground zero) and after WW2 CCCP government populated the city with Russians/other in goal to develop local industry.

Fact: Estonian city with Russian(majority) population.Narva was very beautiful old Hansa city with rich cultural value, but now this is ugly dump. But still it's Estonians land.

My great-grandfather was serving in the SS.

He fell on the 24th of July. I think he was proud to fight and die together with the estonian,danish and dutch for the freedom of estonia and the reich.

@Rag0 Thats cool, but I dont know if you should be proud, for what the nazi's did. the SS were typically who rounded up Jewish suspects. I'm American, have a STRONG Military family, ever since WWI, But I come from a German Family and have a German last name. I have some relatives that remained in Germany and fought in the Wehrmacht. They did some horrible things, and I understand they were just fighting for there country. But WWII Tends to be a sore subject in germany.

all did horrible things in WW2... but in western europe most of volunteers(waffen-ss) fought agains bolsheviks or communism... and estonians - their goal was keep communists and red terror away.. estonia lost about 20% of population because of WW2 ... and there is less estonians right now in estonia than it was on 1939

my point is that estonians maybe had wrong allies but enemy was right

before germans got order to leave estonia there was plan to hold until war will end and then germans will leave weapons to estonians and volunteers will also help against bolshevism ... just war was too long ... they hold the line almost 9 month ... but later had to leave defenses when red army break through in south

@klaabu99 So Germany was fighting at the battle of Narva, until shit started hitting the fan, then they pulled back? But in the end The Estonian fighters won. I bought a Relic helmet from the battle off narva so thats why I'm so interested :)

they left their fortified positions at night when red army break through about 250 km south

and main german force was moved to south .. estonian legion left too ... because ppl still belived that US, and england will help help later to free estonia .. also lot of germans belived that allies will help fight against communism .. thats why western countries have victory day in europe at 8th may and russia have it on 9th may

@haveaniceday45 I know this is old but, Sure, they wanted to occupy estonia and we lost jews. However it was not a bad alternative compared to the Russians who killed our people, later on killed again and deported them. Germany was a better choice any day, mainly because we are not a jewish nation so we did not have much to lose.

Sad that they killed so many innocent, but it was either the jews, or everyone.
