@tadjcmartin ...Okay,not trying to be a smartie..He has done a lot of cuts, with a lot of choices to choose from.My favorite is Follow your Heart.Perhaps if you saw this live, you might form a different opinion.I am also a fan of George Benson,Larry Coryell, and a new up and coming guitarist,Paul Brown.Jazz of all styles,is ageless.Take thetime and explore that world,it has endless avenues of style.
Unless I am mistaken (it was some time ago) I was at this gig in Monteux 4th July 1993, John McLaughlin and the Free Sprits. Also on the bill that night was Dee Dee Bridgwater and Carlos Santana. McLaughlin and Santana came on again towards the end of the gig for a jam. Needless to say it was one hell of an experience for a 26 year old busker Hitchhiking around Europe that summer.
Careful Bonzo, be careful. Don't take what you read as the gospel truth unless the info is from the mouth of someone that was in the room at the time the event took place. There is a lot of myth floating around out there and more often than I care for lots of it ends up in print. That does not mean it is true. I would only be convinced if both McLaughlin and Page were to corroborate it personally.
that would theoretically disprove numerous facts/ information we learn in school and religion. Hearing things from a highly credible source, like someone who toured with Zeppelin for all 12 years would be pretty accurate. Im not saying he took LESSONS from him, but McLaughlin gave him a lesson or two. Iron sharpens iron, the fact that he gave him a lesson is not at all preposterous nor is it a matter to be discussed with caution. These you tube discussions are seemingly pointless.
There is a lot written in history books that are not accurate accounts of what truly took place. Likewise the literature about the music business is rife with what is known as hype. Hype is printed material which states things about an artist which are not true. Specifically, who is your source and exactly how reliable are they in the department of credibility? If Page was shown a thing or two by McLaughlin, that is not the same as taking some lessons. It does sound fishy to me.
i personally teach drum lessons. to some drummers who just need some pointers i still GIVE THEM LESSONS. all that I teach in essence is pointers besides theory. my source is highly credible and i have access to even asking page himself about the account due to my connections with artists that have I've played with and are close friends of him. however it is not of any significance and the opportunity cost of asking him is higher than not, so abiding to that law i will not. end of conversation
I don't know what McLaughlin could have possibly taught Page in the first place because I'm not hearing it in the playing. Not that it means all that much to me, I'm still not convinced, but I'll personally ask John about it the next time see him.
You know, when you see something amazing and just cant believe it happened, or you see it and cant do anything but laugh in slack-jawed awe...THIS IS IT!!!!!
for the sound it really does not matter!!!! he uses a Sansamp PSA1. if you hang a strat or tele or L-5 in the device. it all sounds the same in a certain manner. ps great device. great guitarist. bit arrogant. but why not. One of Hendrix most adored guitarists!! and frined back in the 60/70s
can any1 tell me which album this song is off of? also, if i was to buy some John Mclaughlin albums, whihc ones should i get? also which other gutiarist play like simlar fashion like him? thnx
There are many different versions of this composition. They are on Live At The Royal Festival Hall, The Heart Of Things, Official Pirate
The best Mclaughlin albums IMHO are the Mahavishnu Orchestra albums, Live At The Royal Festival Hall, Que Alegria, After The Rain and Industrial Zen
Only John can play like himself :) but there are a lot of great guitarists: Allan Holdsworth, Alex Machacek, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Al Di Meola, Larry Coryell, John Scofield, Jeff Beck, Michael Landau etc.
I love the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but their songs aren't that hard. Now John's most recent work is difficult. I can play everything from The Innermounting Flame, Birds Of Fire, Between Nothingness and Eternity, and Visions Of The Emerald Beyond, so you might as well kiss your fucking kidney goodbye.
oh, btw, i just heard that cbs is looking for you. even steve vai, steve morse,etc... wants to play with you if you can play everything from mahavishnu.
Mcglaughlin's music is about composition and musicality. It's about having a voice and actually saying something with it. Whether any one of his pieces are "hard" to play or not, is totally beside the point. I've been a musician for 40 years and I have never tried to learn a Mahavishnu piece.
What's the point? If you want exercises buy one of the Donyani or Hanon books.
I admire him a lot, but I can't appreciate his music

@redman840 The thing with Jazz Fusion though is it's like marmite you either love it or you hate it. Except for me, I think both are alright.

It's Gibson ES-175CC. Basically a 175 with a Charlie Christian pickup. Made by Gibson in the late 70's. This one fitted with a Bigsby tailpiece.
