she is truly a living legend. I had attended a house concert in varanasi about 30+ years ago and she also sang there. I still remember that evening very vividly. And, I just happened to meet her again at Lucknow airport. Touched her feet and got blessings from her.......... Ishwar aap ko lambi aayu de....
There is something in Girija Devi's performance that stirs the soul, its difficult to explain but haunts you long afterwards! Truely it reminds one of God.
@Jitpring The system of music being sung in this video has elements of the thousands of years of tradition in Indian music, but also, this music has been adapting and changing over the years from its inception. But yes, the raga system is incredibly old, and is much more complicated and deep than western classical people are reluctant to accept.
One of my favorites of all time, I wish they could fix the edit at the end. Such a beautiful, beautiful song!!!!!!!!! A PERFECT performance by all!!!! Girija is so VERY inspiring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now typically im a fan of rock n metal music, not what you would expect to be listening to this kind of music, however i think this is really good and very nice to listen to :) will search for more i think... well done !!!
Yes, is it not beautiful, Nandhiji? I just favorited this bhajan a few days ago. Lord Krishna, Mirabai, Girija devi, her musicians, the birds in the backround, and this raga. Vaikunta on earth :-)
Govind Ghun Shyam... Shyam: another name for Krishna and also Shyam=early evening...the time for this Raga.
Words in vocal classical are very few, focus is all on the bhav creating aspects of each note and ornamentation. Meaning of words do resemble some bhakti as well, rasa for this Raga as well. Other could elaborate on this.
This video is a classic, the city, the essence of India is in this scene, the participants are blessed to have been there.

The deference on the face of the accompanying artists shows the stature of Girija Devi.

Don't mix your distorsed occidental perception of "sects" and classical indian music built spiritually and turned to the Gods...
Hope it'll help you friendly

Is this style of music thousands of years old? If so, it's yet another blow to today's rampant chronological snobbery.

@balachandra10...than *some* western classical people.
I think the word you are looking for is complex, not complicated. Complicated implies you are trying to solve something.
