  • This video is a classic, the city, the essence of India is in this scene, the participants are blessed to have been there.

  • she is truly a living legend. I had attended a house concert in varanasi about 30+ years ago and she also sang there. I still remember that evening very vividly. And, I just happened to meet her again at Lucknow airport. Touched her feet and got blessings from her.......... Ishwar aap ko lambi aayu de....

  • rangeela..

  • There is something in Girija Devi's performance that stirs the soul, its difficult to explain but haunts you long afterwards! Truely it reminds one of God.

  • appa ! it is in your earlier days ! awesome ... no words ... every tome i hear spelbounded

  • is it early morning or evening?

  • @IngaTeraude I think it's an afternoon raag

  • very nice !

  • Extremely powerful and such a beautiful country

  • i imagine a touch of delay in her voice, that would be quite something, but its still superb

  • The deference on the face of the accompanying artists shows the stature of Girija Devi.

  • look at her again. what a graceful personality let alone her singing. marvellous she is

  • Yes, God's energy is in the music and as it enters our hearts it becomes an eternal part of us ...

  • Beautiful! ther definitely using the nikris scale in this which gives it such a mysterious yet beautiful sound.

  • Intoxicating Cjack1 ?

    No !!!!

    Highly spiritual !

Don't mix your distorsed occidental perception of "sects" and classical indian music built spiritually and turned to the Gods...

    Hope it'll help you friendly

    Om shanti

  • It is intoxicaing ! Of course its not meant literally dumbass. Intoxicating as in pure bliss

  • Is there any way I could download this?

  • U can with if u have real audio player....

  • Is this style of music thousands of years old? If so, it's yet another blow to today's rampant chronological snobbery.

  • @Jitpring The system of music being sung in this video has elements of the thousands of years of tradition in Indian music, but also, this music has been adapting and changing over the years from its inception. But yes, the raga system is incredibly old, and is much more complicated and deep than western classical people are reluctant to accept.

  • @balachandra10...than *some* western classical people.

I think the word you are looking for is complex, not complicated. Complicated implies you are trying to solve something.

  • @zoebisch01 Yep, you are right :)

  • so sacred, deep and profound!

    aum

  • Yes, is it not beautiful, Nandhiji? I just favorited this bhajan a few days ago. Lord Krishna, Mirabai, Girija devi, her musicians, the birds in the backround, and this raga. Vaikunta on earth :-)

  • kishan maharaj ji looks sooo young

  • those instrument are much more ancient than 'guitars' and are called tanpuras, they are not solo instruments by the way!

  • when I watch videos like this I understand that God exists...

  • ....exactly..... music like this cannot be created without divine intervention...

  • hare !hare! hare bol!!!

  • Does anyone know the first couple lines of this bhajan? I can only make out 'Govind gun gaave'. What are the first lines?

  • Govind Ghun Shyam... Shyam: another name for Krishna and also Shyam=early evening...the time for this Raga.

Words in vocal classical are very few, focus is all on the bhav creating aspects of each note and ornamentation. Meaning of words do resemble some bhakti as well, rasa for this Raga as well. Other could elaborate on this.

  • Nice comment on the nuances of 'Shyam' and 'Shaam'.

  • my favorite RAAG MADHUWANTI!!!!!! thw awesomest raag there is...Girija Devi is te shiz!

  • I wish I find words to laud this great singer.

  • Very good. Wish it was professionally recorded.

  • Personally, I find it perfect just as it is.

  • Oh haunting melody of Divine spirit. Wonderful to hear....

  • Do u have Bela Shende's rendition of Meerabai's bhajan in the 1998 SAREGAMA finals

  • You are right. It is so intoxicating.
