OMG !!! It does not get any better than that. I wish, Andy could add little solo too, but may be I'm asking too much. In any case, this is my "DREAM BAND". I get shivers going through my spine whenever I hear something like this.
This lady cannot be an earthly being. (BTW Joey will never catch up with her left foot). Prime playing no matter what grumpy naysayers said so far on this thread.
joebandanna-Yes, it's repetitive (those of us in the business call that rhythm). It's also something she can do better than anyone else. Question: Can you do it? I didn't think so. Anyways, happy listening. I hope your comments are your way of acknowledging BD is an artist at what she does.
108251st -- good one about JOEBANDANA. Yeah, I think I'd have to go with that too. Barbara's unbelievable. And not just her melodic ideas at that smokin' tempo, but her rhythmic feel and articulation are SUPERB! That really adds to the 'burn your ass down to the ground' feel of the whole thing. And not to be politically incorrect, but she's pretty as hell on top of all that! :)
Man, she's smokin'; I couldn't be that co-ordinated if there was 2 of me !!! The whole band kills !!! God, I wish we had music like this here in the wasteland of Orlando---I'd work just to support my music jones !!! Major kudos to Barb and her band !! Peace:-)
JOEBANDANA has no clue, so lets give him break. He has left leg envey and most likely is impotant on the pedals. No understanding of real organ playing. Put Joe on a pipe organ and see how fast his feet move! He would be playing patterns to just save his ASS,,, WOW, where are your videos Joe? Where did you say they are?..I can't find them!
Who is this idiot picking apart Barbara's solo? How astute to comment that she has "an amazing pair of hands". Wow, thanks, we would never have known that without your sage analysis. By the way; what other kind of soloist has to accompany herself while doing a solo? Here she is doing a screaming solo AND she's dancing over those pedals to provide a bass line as well! BTW.. Well said jackson.
Hey, joebanana...isn't it somewhat akin to picking "fly shit "out of pepper there...!!Really, we couldn't give a whit what you think. Just enjoy the woman for the incredible talent that she is. Until maybe somebody better amd more talented comes along.
The comment about her bass playing would be like complaining about Dennis Chambers' repetitive drumming during her solo. They are both functioning as a supportive rhythm section during a hot solo. There are few players on this earth who could keep up her bass tempo for ten minutes - let alone the two hours of this concert. Rhoda Scott knows a bit more than you: "Barbara is an amazing artist, best pedal technique of us all."
i think her bass lines were a little repetitive especially in her solo, it actually got quite annoying - compared to someone like that monster De Francesco, who never seems to play the same bass line twice! she had nice feel in her hands though
De Francesco is no more and no less repetitive than her. A waking bass sometimes appears to be repetitive, but when you listen closely you will find it never quite is the same, and it is definitely not true during her solo; I just listened to it again, keeping special attention to the bass line. And if you keep watching the foot when it is in sight you can clearly see it never is the same.
not buying it sorry, all i hear is about the same 3 or 4 bass lines over and over again.. even at 5:28 - 5:37, this is what I'm talking about, she definitely plays the exact bassline two times in a row - u can see her feet going to the same keys, i know this may not seem like much to go on, but I hear her playing this particular bass line and another one or two far too frequently for my liking. she has an amazing pair of hands though, and plays an amazing solo.
i counted her playing the bass phrase "A B C C# D E F F# G Gb E Eb D C B Bb C" 23 times throughout the guitar player's solo alone - 0:33-3:25. 23 times to play the exact same bass phrase over and over and over again behind a soloist to me was a little repetitive to listen to.
but also the changes to pent up house are VERY basic, so in essence the bass line is gonna pretty general anyways. but until you can do better than her, you cant criticize that kind of skill.
Neither; she plays a classic Hammond with an extension. She has sampled several sounds, especially acoustic bass for the bass pedals (which is why the bass lines sound so darned groovy).
her leg must be like a super leg. shes fucking amazing , no one is beter, she has untimate feel and skill. oh my god she does such hard stuff all at the same time. and she keeps it for so long. theres so one more skilled
Barbara believes music is a celebration, not a competition. Joey, Shirley, Rhoda, Tony, Mel and many many more are great players.
Joey is keeping the smoking soul jazz tradition alive, that's great. And if you watch this clip, perhaps you'll agree that Barbara is also a great player with her own unique style and artistic voice.
Indeed very fine group communication. Lady Barbara is beyond category. Foot tapping IS the B3, and Jimmy Smith would have a tough time these days with all that energy. But Mr Watkins on guitar brought the pot to boiling, and not many guitarists could do just that! Sonny himself would like this set.
WOW!!! I really dug it all, but I especially liked Dennerlein's " one-handed vibes " solo that sounded like it was 5-handed! She has the busiest feet I've seen for a long while. 5-stars!
Guitarist reminds me of Mike Stern

What other organist, male or female, could possibly surpass? She performs in
many styles, genres, and with an amazing array of musicians! Plus, she has
composed for her instrument. Anything left out????

That cat Mitch Watkins can play the guitar.
And at some point you just have to ask if this woman is an android or something. No human can do what she does.

Is that an extra keyboard that she gets that vibes sound from, or is she she playing a modern sample based Hammond ?
