This is a remarkably well-made film, putting into perspective that WWII in the western theater was between Germany/Austria and Russia while England was a sideshow.

Just watched this all start to finish ... horrible, horrible things. But very interesting, informative and educational as well as well made and narrated. A very well made and horrifying documentary.

Is there any way of getting a picture of Soviet troop numbers from 1941 to 1945, millions were taken prisoner in the early years, massive numbers killed and yet, Stalin and his commanders were able to reform, re-equip and launch massive attacks in 1943 driving the Germans all the way back to Berlin, I am perplexed as to how they managed this given their astonishing losses especially in the early years, explanations welcome.

Historians have biased and skewed views. In Russia, their books say they won the war. In Britian, their books say Churhill won the war. In the Americas, the books and the vets state that the USA won the war.

First person witnesses from both sides are absorbing and credible. When tyrannies clash, there are atrocities on all sides. I think that this series may be a tad one-sided, but most WWII documentaries more-or-less have to be. Who was the bigger villain? is a question that will continue to haunt us, as the West was heavily complicit with both at one time or another. For example, where were the USA and USSR in 1940 when France fell, and what does this say about war guilt?

i can see where u are getting at, with a war so brutal who really is a hero? One example is the 101st Airborne, men such as Dick Winters. The young men who stormed the beaches at Normandy, the man women and children of the Warsaw Uprising. In such a dark time, yes heroes were hard to come by but there were plenty, the Soviets werent one of them.

Winter was invetable, Hitler thought the war would be over by then and never prepared for what was to come. Stalingrad could have been avoided if the lines werent extended so far and inferior Hungarian units werent guarding the line that broke and led to Stalingrad. Its long been debated that had the Nazis went straight for Moscow instead of the Caucasus they could topple the Soviets politically. Yet Hitlers plan to destroy Russias war machine does make sense as well.

It is strange. These documentaries, and the study of history in general, should be useful to keep alive the remembrance of the attrocities we are capable of, so we dont repeat them. However, I have the feeling that if I were german, I would have an inmense thirst of revenge watching this.
Thanks for sharing this documentary. Although no film can capture all the details, this one covered more history than we generally learn in schools. Stalin DID fall off his horse -- TWICE -- after the failed practice Zhukov was dragooned into the task. Zhukov did everything possible to duck the job.
All of the Marshals that were publicly visible were kicked out of Moscow, not just Zhukov. BTW, Zhukov was fulsomely disliked by the other officers. That's the reason Stalin permitted him such freedom of action, and ultimately his survival.
The very best Marshals were murdered before the Great Patriotic War in the Purges.

I am somewhat disappointed with these series. While inarguably soviets committed atrocities during the war, the series paints a picture that germans were fighiting nobly and russians behaved like savages. The casualties suffered on soviet side are dumbed down. Just an example, siege of st. Petersburg is not mentioned at all even though 1.5 million died. In addition, all german atrocities are described in a very distant way while russian atrocities are described in a graphic and upfront matter.
Stalin deliberately delayed the rescue of Leningrad. He hate the Leningrad faction of the Communist Party. You will find that none were allowed into is inner circle.
Being the source of the Revolution, Stalin always feared it would be the center of another revolution -- to dump him.
However, we all know the next revolution occurred in Moscow 1991.

@senoirem Yes, this documentary kind of masks the german attrocities (which were far greater than those of the soviets) and makes the russians look just as bad as the germans. All the german interviewees just circled around the difficult questions by saying that they thought Russians were inferior people, and therefore had the right to kill them.
@leonenaj Well, the Russian solders interviewed here don't exactly make it easy on themselves by talking about raping, stealing, and killing whilst laughing like it was a big joke. You do have to take into account that a lot of the red army were peasants with little or no education though, and that's just fact - I'm not trying to confirm any Nazi ideology or anything. I'm not even saying they are wrong for cutting up these SS monsters, but show a little decorum please!

I agree with you to. It's a shame. Even when Auschwitz was mentioned, it was only used as a intro to talk about how Stalin deported his own people... This documentary should have been more balanced.
The beginning of the series tells of the German war crimes. It is three hours long, and by the time the soviets get their own revenge, the beginning is kind of "forgotten" in a way.
This is how "western" impression of invading Russians is like... though the ENTIRE history. Cossacks in Paris, Russians in Warsaw, Soviets in Berlin, to name a few. No matter the cause of conflict, the moment the mighty Russ push back the invader, west responds with fear over the imminent and vicious retaliation.

Many of them saw their families burned alive and their farmlands destroyed by the Germans as they were advancing West to liberate the USSR. This doesn't translate to hugging thy enemy. Americans were no bombed back in their home country. Anyway, war is hell. If you want to subdue a nation to slavery, be prepared to suffer the consequences of loss.

Is there any way of getting a picture of Soviet troop numbers from 1941 to 1945, millions were taken prisoner in the early years, massive numbers killed and yet, Stalin and his commanders were able to reform, re-equip and launch massive attacks in 1943 driving the Germans all the way back to Berlin, I am perplexed as to how they managed this given their astonishing losses especially in the early years, explanations welcome.

I'm not german, but central european and can assure you most, not all, of the german officers scare me too - they are the "Ewig Gestrigen", those who never change, I don't think their view on Russia and the Russians has ever changed. I think that those german soldiers, who wore this war with shame, died long before this documentary could be made. But are the russian veterans so different - all I heard in this documentary was that everyone had to follow orders. Easy enough for us to judge them.

Historians are now writing about "The Great Patriotic War" thru the first hand account of Russians and are beginning to be much more sypathetic to the Russians. For starters historians are now differentiating between Stalin and the Russian people and the Red Army.
There is beginning to be literature in the West that writes of the Red Army in a generally positive light and how the Red Army and the soldiers suffered because of Stalin.

Cause of the Cold War and the "evil Russians" the West/America only got the side of "Germans suffered from Soviet atrocities" while nothing was ever said about Soviet suffering. With the end of the Cold War historians and, presumably, filmmakers, HAVING ACCESS TO THE PEOPLE, should be able to bring more of the Russian side of the war to the West /America.
This "War of the Century" was produced in the late 90s and obviously still hadn't shaken the Cold War mentality against the Russians.

Superb doc. with much archival film never before available. America is the only still standing empire able to wage war anyplace it likes. First person witnesses from both sides are absorbing and credible. When tyrannies clash, there are atrocities on all sides. Americans in the Pacific theater were no exception nor were the wars in Cuba, the Philippines, Korea, Viet Nam, Latin America, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Libya. Is it any wonder why the world hates us for what we've done to them?

The SS did NOT surrender with the rest of Germany. They fought on in the mountains until they literally ran out of small arms ammo.
This took over a week!
The SS Panzer Army was liquidated -- entire -- by the NKVD.
They didn't even get to the gulag.

He never fired a shot, having been dragooned into the ranks at the ripe age of 15.

I think that this series may be a tad one-sided, but most WWII documentaries more-or-less have to be. Who was the bigger villain? is a question that will continue to haunt us, as the West was heavily complicit with both at one time or another. For example, where were the USA and USSR in 1940 when France fell, and what does this say about war guilt?

i can see where u are getting at, with a war so brutal who really is a hero? One example is the 101st Airborne, men such as Dick Winters. The young men who stormed the beaches at Normandy, the man women and children of the Warsaw Uprising. In such a dark time, yes heroes were hard to come by but there were plenty, the Soviets werent one of them.

Winter was invetable, Hitler thought the war would be over by then and never prepared for what was to come. Stalingrad could have been avoided if the lines werent extended so far and inferior Hungarian units werent guarding the line that broke and led to Stalingrad. Its long been debated that had the Nazis went straight for Moscow instead of the Caucasus they could topple the Soviets politically. Yet Hitlers plan to destroy Russias war machine does make sense as well.

It is strange. These documentaries, and the study of history in general, should be useful to keep alive the remembrance of the attrocities we are capable of, so we dont repeat them. However, I have the feeling that if I were german, I would have an inmense thirst of revenge watching this.

Thanks for sharing this documentary. Although no film can capture all the details, this one covered more history than we generally learn in schools. Unfortunately, with this education also comes the shame I feel for humankind, the brutality is so severe it makes me feel doomed for a repetition of any number of tyrants (in our midst).

Stalin DID fall off his horse -- TWICE -- after the failed practice Zhukov was dragooned into the task. Zhukov did everything possible to duck the job.
All of the Marshals that were publicly visible were kicked out of Moscow, not just Zhukov. BTW, Zhukov was fulsomely disliked by the other officers. That's the reason Stalin permitted him such freedom of action, and ultimately his survival.
The very best Marshals were murdered before the Great Patriotic War in the Purges.

I am somewhat disappointed with these series. While inarguably soviets committed atrocities during the war, the series paints a picture that germans were fighiting nobly and russians behaved like savages. The casualties suffered on soviet side are dumbed down. Just an example, siege of st. Petersburg is not mentioned at all even though 1.5 million died. In addition, all german atrocities are described in a very distant way while russian atrocities are described in a graphic and upfront matter.

Stalin deliberately delayed the rescue of Leningrad. He hate the Leningrad faction of the Communist Party. You will find that none were allowed into is inner circle.
Being the source of the Revolution, Stalin always feared it would be the center of another revolution -- to dump him.
However, we all know the next revolution occurred in Moscow 1991.

@senoirem Having read this, you're right. No mention of Babi Yar, either, one of the most spectacularly cruel and barbaric acts of the whole war. I have seen pictures of women and children being shot point blank. A woman holding her infant child, both of them of them being shot by an SS officer. Why? Why would you shoot a woman holding her baby?

@senoirem I have to agree whit you here, the germans are mostly known for thier death camps but not thier war crimes, the hysteria at the end of the war has allways been enlighted and so the fear of a russian vengence. Russia were also accounted as allies in a war against Hitlers regim, and the choise for retribution of former atrocities becomes more of a moral issue rather then the counter nazi ideology excuse, whitch has been accepted as brainwashing. Hench more light on the russian soldiers.

@senoirem Yes, this documentary kind of masks the german attrocities (which were far greater than those of the soviets) and makes the russians look just as bad as the germans. All the german interviewees just circled around the difficult questions by saying that they thought Russians were inferior people, and therefore had the right to kill them.

@leonenaj Well, the Russian solders interviewed here don't exactly make it easy on themselves by talking about raping, stealing, and killing whilst laughing like it was a big joke. You do have to take into account that a lot of the red army were peasants with little or no education though, and that's just fact - I'm not trying to confirm any Nazi ideology or anything. I'm not even saying they are wrong for cutting up these SS monsters, but show a little decorum please!

@senoirem yep, definitely agree with this. I really don't see how this doco could be called war of the century when it focuses mainly on russian atrocities. One of the german interviewees was not scrutinised for killing, raping etc. whilst the russian was asked the question "slitting the throats was a war crime".. and then portrayed as a criminal. Not very balanced history!

I agree with you to. It's a shame. Even when Auschwitz was mentioned, it was only used as a intro to talk about how Stalin deported his own people... This documentary should have been more balanced.

The beginning of the series tells of the German war crimes. It is three hours long, and by the time the soviets get their own revenge, the beginning is kind of "forgotten" in a way.

This is how "western" impression of invading Russians is like... though the ENTIRE history. Cossacks in Paris, Russians in Warsaw, Soviets in Berlin, to name a few. No matter the cause of conflict, the moment the mighty Russ push back the invader, west responds with fear over the imminent and vicious retaliation.

i agree that it's a faliour cause they did not mention the battle of Leningrad, and the role of other German allies in the attack on the USSR like the Fins and Croats (who where among the first to enter Stalingrad)
my point is that people are too much silent about communist atrocities and do not focus enough on that issue.personally i'm glad howthis film portrayed the barbaric nature of the Red army and the USSR leaders.

I don't see this series as anti-Russian, anti Stalin yes. The Russian people and the Russian minorities were the victims of a ruthless tyrant Stalin, and another ruthless tyrant that invaded there country Hitler.
Stalin and Hitler were both low life worthless scumbags responsible for the deaths and sufferings of millions of innocents many of which were women and children.

Stalin was not just an excuse, he was directly in control of the Russian Military and secret police which he used to terrorize his own people and to assassinate whom ever he deemed an enemy, including almost all of his officer corp.

@brightstarone exactly. Their behavior is even somewhat symetrical, Hitler's actions at the beginning if the war being almost duplicated by the Stalinians by the end of it for example... There's no good between those two, nor a "worst". Two massmurderers are the same in my book. Arguing which one is the worst is I think disgusting, comparing the freaking numbers etc. So thanks for your messages, adding a little sense in this comments section

BTW, Stalin fell off his horse, twice, it wasn't a 'worry'! He never forgave Zhukov and promptly sent him into oblivion -- even though he ORDERED Zhukov to ride the horse over his objections.

@senoirem I agree with you. This series did underplay the REASON why soviets behaved like that. Many of them saw their families burned alive and their farmlands destroyed by the Germans as they were advancing West to liberate the USSR. This doesn't translate to hugging thy enemy. Americans were no bombed back in their home country. Anyway, war is hell. If you want to subdue a nation to slavery, be prepared to suffer the consequences of loss.
