Seeing this brings back memories of when From the Choirgirl Hotel was first released and the tour for the album came. That was her best album and also her best tour. It was epic to see her play all those old songs with a band to back her up.
@Darquan223 I was only 7 when this tour happened. I wish I was born in the 80's so I could have been old enough to know her in the 90's!!! This tour (just watching bootlegs and listenning to bootlegs) was just on a whole other level. Kicks any rockbands ass of these days. The LIGHTS the SOUND the TORI AMOS! Just amazing... If I had a time machine..............
@PreciousEarthquakes2 - Back in the 70's there was this kind of therapy called "Primal Scream" that was really popular with celebrities and rich people. Anyway, a small part of the therapy involved getting to a place, emotionally, where you let out a very distinctive sort of scream, or a yelp like a small animal in pain... I think Tori sort of isolated this concept as a tool in music... and maybe without even knowing it. There is a band called "Primal Scream" but I've never heard them.
there's absolutely no way tori would've been allowed to stay at peabody as long as she did without knowing how to read sheet music. trust me. she prefers playing by ear, yes, but OF COURSE she can read music.
she's stated often her scholarship wasn't renewed because she kept improvising & playing zeppelin in the middle of mozart cadenzas, etc. classical conservatories tend to have large sticks up their asses.
She couldn't read when she was at the Academy, but that does not mean she didn't eventually learn to read. But it is completely possible to be a musician without knowing how to read music because people come up with their own notation systems or just record their music as soon as they create it.
Precious Things is absolutely incredible from a musical standpoint...that piano melody is ridiculous....and the fact that she can't read music, she just makes this stuff up and remembers it...she's so brilliant.
"Amos has asserted that she lost the scholarship because of her interest in rock and popular music, coupled with her dislike for reading from sheet music"
oh you idiot do you not realize world is not bending to your will. she is not going to loose a skill just because you say so. this is pointless. have a nice, deluded life...
Precious Things is such a good example of Tori's ability to let her songs/performances evolve organically throughout the years. Just compare this version to her '92 Montreal version...it takes on a whole new meaning.
That's exactly what I was thinking, but I found differences. You don't hear the crowd here since it would be inappropriate for them to behave like a concert crowd since it's "sessions". Also the "every nice giiiiiiiiirl" part is much less impressive in this performance. It is very similar though.
Little Earthquakes is the reason why I still listen to Tori now.. if I had never found that album, I would have missed out on many of my journeys... I think Tori is soo beautiful back in these days.....
Steve Caton on guitar, Matt Chamberlain on drums, and Jon Evans on bass (5 string). Excellent line up.

How the fuck do you think she can write songs if she can't understand written music? What kind of idiocy is that? You clearly DON'T know your Tori.

she can't read music. That's why she lost the scholarship. And that's why she named her first band Y Kant Tori Read? Trust me, I know my Tori.

insisting on playing "by ear" is not the same as being unable to read sheet...

This is the best version of Precious Things ever recorded. I like it even better than the TVAB version.

is this the live version that's on To Venus and Back live cd?
raz1980 2 years ago
not sure, it very well could be. it sounds like the same time period at least

Highly doubt it.

Sorry, no, it's not. Have you listened to To Venus and Back? You would know if you had.
ProfessionalWidow83 2 years ago
I have To Venus and Back and I haven't listened to it in a while, (my bad) but it is actually quite similar to that version.

@raz1980
The TVAB live disc came from the "plugged 98' tour". I'm not sure if this was part of that or not but it does sounds VERY close.
MrHATEnFATE 2 years ago
After looking...this show would have been broadcast mid to late 1998, right around the time of the tour the live music was taken from.
