Play on words: 006 "closing time James, last call" ---we're running out of time, like the closing of a bar. 007 "buy me a pint"---playful reply back to 006 saying he needed more time to set the timers...nothing to do with actually drinking beer
Watch Quantum Of Solace: It's a stupid movie but Bond's drinking a San Miguel in the bar where Felix Leiter appears! So, Bond drinks a beer sometimes! :-)
@VanHelsingNumber1 Yes, I suppose. I saw that beer as blending in rather than relaxing. Is it really a stupid film? I see it as a Big Mac compared to the Lobster Thermidor with Quails Eggs and Beluga Caviar that was Casino Royale. Both are very nice and sometimes you're in the mood for one over the other.
@dangale Check the background behind "Quantum Of Solace".Daniel Craig himself told that the whole movie became a victim of the writer's strike at that time. It is also said that they tried to restock the holes in the story with more action scenes. So i think QOS couldn't become the satisfying movie it should be (to all participants). I think if they had the choice (if there was no profit-orientated motivation) they wouldn't have shoot it that way! (sorry for my bad grammar) :-)
To hammer a point here: When ordering/having all the other drinks, he was actually going to be drinking them or already in the process of drinking them.
In that scene of Goldeneye, the Soviet Army is about to bear down on both him and 006, and it's obviously a play on words to indicate "James, you're running out of time", and to which his response is "get me more time".
His rich tastes are still preserved. He never really had a pint of anything, nor was he really ordering any either.
Well he maybe referring to a pint of vodka or bourbon - at least thats what is said about the drinking habits of James Bond on wikipedia. Also the logic worked out here is that all the drinks he has been having are exotic and not 'common' and since wine doesn't come in pints, the only other exotic drink that he prefers to take that comes in a pint is vodka (which is also found in a martini)
I think that's Bond letting his hair down with (what he thought) was a friend.
Yeah, he likes the expensive stuff when he's "on" but he's not adverse to a pint with buddies.
You should have added the President's comment from "The West Wing" on "shaken, not stirred." "He's ordering a watered-down martini and he's being snooty about it!"
I like all of the Brosnan Bond films except Tomorrow Never Dies. All the actors were good, the action was okay, but the story was just stupid. Or at least poorly executed.
I think what gets me about it is the loss of the ship happens and immediately M knows everything about the bad guy who did it. By the end of the limousine ride, there is nothing to investigate but why he did it. No mystery in this movie at all.
Why is this such a mystery. Is there an unwritten rule Bond does not drink beer from time to time? The man is not originally from high class society if you have read the books.
The films set up a long standing image of Bond over the previous 33 years showing that he, rather snobbishly, only excepts the very best in everything, in line with Fleming's own tastes. That line stands out as very uncharacteristic of the film Bond and the 007 of the novels, even as a joke.
Also I have a personal dislike of GOLDENEYE and so any chance to poke fun at it's faults, I will. (I realise that's like poking a corpse with a stick.) I expect everyone to do the same to my work!
What about Phu Yuck? If Bond excepted only the best, he would have told the waiter to bring Bollinger and not that mistake for a wine. Point is Bond will adapt to anything. Beer may not be the preferred beverage, but he will drink it if offered.
As for Goldeneye, I personally feel the same for The World Is Not Enough. A dreadful Bond film.
That's a good point. Really, I like TWINE a lot. It comes close to the feel of THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, mostly serious but tongue in cheek at times, very homely British feel in the London scenes. Also the villian-as-Bond-girl idea was clever. I feel Renard was a red herring and Christmas was hilariously (intentionally?) miscast but after the awesome opening boat chase (camera equipment in shot and all) I'd forgive anything.
In the early films, why did the producers choose actors that they knew would require complete dubbing later (Goldfinger, Largo and Tracy's father had all their dialogue dubbed)? And notice how certain sound effects are incredibly exagerrated in the early films - Grant peeling off the mask of the fake Bond, Bond pulling off his Bird hat in Goldfinger, Largo's towel-snapping, Bond slapping Tracy, etc.
Goldeneye is one of my favourite Bond films, but moving on...
He doesn't actually order or drink a beer in Goldeneye, although he orders one in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Licence to Kill, and finally drinks one in Quantum of Solace.
Well I think it could be a joke. It's a common thing that if they are about to close, well then you have one last pint before closing and that is the last call.
Simple enough - Goldeneye was poor on just about every level. From the poor script, to the awful soundtrack... Even down to stupid things, like Brosnan's big hair... The annoying habit of casting Scots in the role of Russians... And the fact that after the climactic end fight - which would have left Bond exhausted and badly injured - Bond picks up the girl and grins like an moron. I love all things Bond, but as far as Goldeneye is concerned... Buy me a pint.
Ah, finally, someone agrees with me. It's not their finest hour, is it, and yet, it drew in $3 billion or something...! It needed a good rewrite by Bruce Fernstein not just a polish. Funny though, even bad Bond is better than no Bond.
Its simple they are using code words, When Alec Trevelyan says "Closing time James" that is a warning to hurry up because they enemy is coming and James Bond responds "Buy me a pint meaning basically "give me a minute."
Yeah I suppose you're right. I'm just enjoying having a sly dig at GoldenEye's bad script. ;) The Q scene is awful, sadistic and not in the least amusing and Moneypenny's dialogue exchange is trite and cold and Sean Bean's not-from-Rochdale-really accent utterly kills every scene he's in. But there's no 'mystery' in that, so I can't use it for one of these! (My personal opinion you understand.) Thanks for watching.
Bond always has a drink appropriate to the moment.
Trevelyan uses the Pub terminology of "Closing Time," so Bond calls for the appropriate drink of "A Pint." It could also be that Bond is catering to Trevelyan's more working-class tastes at that moment.

Maybe "Double Oh Six" is not the cultured type, and 007 is willing to slum it with with the plebs by sharing a pint. Or at least allude to it.

Brosnan is Irish, I would take this to mean Guinness. A pint is the preffered serving size of stout in Ireland

Here, why is a pint of Guiness like a Roman Catholic Priest? White collar, black cassock, and if you get a dodgy one you gotta watch your arse

Well, you do have a point there.

I always thought this was one part comedic interplay between him and 006, and code words "Time to go, James" "Just finishing up here, Alec"
