if we could rip ourselves away from Politics for a moment and endulge in the rythmic dance in my ears - I salute you...well done 'The Stillsons", Id never heard of you until five minutes ago... cant wait to see tou in Freo in March :)
It is hoped that the public recognition of their needs increases awareness and stimulates improved responses from governments, past providers of “care” and the health and welfare community.
On Monday 16 November 2009 the Prime Minister Mr Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Mr Malcolm Turnbull issued a motion of an apology to the Forgotten Australians on behalf of the nation. The motion was not passed until the 26th of November.
On 16 November 2009, the Australian Parliament, through the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition, formally acknowledged and apologised for the experiences of Forgotten Australians and Child Migrants, their harsh treatment and their ongoing trauma.
They are the survivors of the roughly 500,000 children who found themselves in institutional or other out-of-home care in the last Century.
The Australian Senate called them “Forgotten Australians”. Other words are also used by some of the people themselves, including “care leavers”, “Homies”, “State Wards” and “ex-residents”. “Forgotten Australians” is considered the least likely to give offense.
The Forgotten Australians were not just child migrants it is a term applied to the more than 500,000 non-indigenous, indigenous children and child migrants who experienced care in institutions or outside a home setting during the 20th century. Many of these children were abused physically, emotionally, or sexually while in care. Survivors to this day still suffer the effects of the child abuse.
Yes, but ironically it was quite open in the press during the 40-50s, the clippings in the montage of our video (3.08 minutes) are from the 1940/50s, Sydney Herald, Canberra Times. The scheme in SA was successful. Most countries don't talk about their history though - no one in the UK likes to talk about how we perfected the concentration camps during the Boer Wars; or our Opium Wars with China; or genocide of the Indigenous population in Australia, but they'll always point at Germany, USA. JB
many would have benefitted from being sent out to australia and the numbers are pretty vague, however the issue lies with how it was done it was all underhand and to this day it still doesnt appear in the history books or taught in schools in Britain, a half hearted apology from 2 governments has not resolved the issues. But look further into Australia, do foget the forgotten australians 500,000 conservative guess of the amount of children that went through the care system in just 50 years...
Yes, they do. It is not all terrible though. A child migrant saw the video last week and told me it was a good thing she brought to Australia as she would have died on the streets of London.
Wow, I just heard this song a few days ago, and I`m shocked that this isn't a top-10 hit ? The commercial radio stations here in Australia are a disgrace for not making this song the hit that it deserves to be. Even the video is fantastic
Just heard this on 612ABC knowing how sad this is to children right now,as well, of all kinds of persuaions who stilll are, the taken, the stolen, the greiving the ones lied too by, family, friends carers, institutionalised the forgotten the neglected - Truth Hurts but little ones all over the world are still experiencing it always for the gain of NO ONE
Beautiful song to illustrate a dark time in the British Commonwealths history and Australias role in it. The video portrays a perfect depiction to demonstrate and educate what happened. Well done guys!!
Andy, it's great to see your performing. You're a very talented musician x AB
