@Mayday614 while I agree with you black girls are in a way greater need than other races hell just compare what the majority of black girls are doing w/their lives to other races.
@kalebnbrown Yes. Her and Talib Kweli have a group called Idle Warship. Their CD just came out at the beginning of this month and it's pretty damn good.
I remember the first time i heard this song i thought of myself as one of these Golden Boys and was so moved by it that i decided to change my life and way of thinking and living.. i heavent been the same since..in a good way..lol..Amazing.
@stagm3 No i realized i was gay when i was 5 ..you missed the point entirely..the song is referencing guys who think they're all that but in reality are just like everyone else..sorry if my intellect squashed your attempt at an insult but this is 2011 and most of us who are gay dont need a song for self-realization.
@SuperMonique1974 yup, i still bump this shit. it's a classic album (and i don't just throw that word around lightly). damn shame what music has become, though. electronica is the way to go, imo, for that neo-soul vibe these days. anyhoo, be cool.
I absolutely loooove Progressive metal. Meshuggah, SikTh, BTBAM, etc...but I cant get enough of this girl! Her music is just so, "real." Why cant artists nowadays make music like this?
She's basically talking about artist that become successful by portraying to be someone else. "And would they love you if they knew all the things we know/We've got these images/We need them to be true/
Not ready to believe we're no more insecure than you." Be yourself. If people don't like you, fuck em.
@KurvayshusB She was on MCA Records, a label that wasn't experienced in dealing with R&B singers that made music to challenge the listeners. Keep in mind, she was labelmates with Chante Moore, Mary J. Blige and Immature- her music was too left of center for R&B fans.
@MyJunior1975 I get what you're saying, but Res is in no-way R&B. Her music would fall more in the rock genre. She has even said this herself. If anything, they were trying to classify her as neo-soul. They just had no clue what to do with a Black girl with locs whose music was not R&B. It's unfortunate b/c she's incredibly talented.
@writingwhileblack That I already knew beforehand. The problem is that when a Black artist goes against the grain, they are going to be met with resistance from the labels as well as the Black audience. A lot of which can be placed on Black people abandoning a genre they created when it's appropriated by White people- which is basically all genres. They boxed themselves into a corner by retreating to only hip hop and R&B being they are the only genres that are devoid of White influence.
@KurvayshusB Because the music industry doesn't let people like Res get popular. She was too good, she educated her listeners, she could never become famous... it's really sad.
@TLakeya She's basically talking about artist that become successful by portraying to be someone else. "And would they love you if they knew all the things we know/We've got these images/We need them to be true/
Not ready to believe we're no more insecure than you." Be yourself. If people don't like you, fuck em.

she is so beautiful, not afraid to be her self, i think the problem is she came befor her time, for example if thsi sond came out today or a year in a half ago it would have sold like crazy
@guillemot50 it was when Mary was touring for No More Drama, and I live in Belgium and Mary toured there and Res happened to be her opening act, a year or two later she released her album, and as the two of us mentioned she's scandalousing underrated and not just that shunned by the music community :(
I remember when I first heard this in 2001, I used to watch mtv base all day just to hear this and watch the video. She has so much talent you should hear this album every track of just brilliant. I can't really define her music its amazing....and she is so sexy. If she ever see's my post please contact me.
Her voice is phenomenal, and I just went back and caught my comment from three years ago...still one of the most beautiful voices ever. Her version of Miracles (cover of the Starship song) is incredible.
@Mayday614 young women period. We need to empower one another through music instead of idolizing half naked females with autotuned voices talking about their humps bumps and lumps.
@Mayday614 I JUST downloaded this song...i forgot the name of this song of i had to type in the only lyric of this osng i knew "We know the truth about you"..XD
not just young black girls...every girl n guy needs to have this artist in their ipod/mp3. this is REAL music for the youth...for the masses. not the empty commercially produced autotune s#@! that they play on the radio nowadays!
@Mayday614 Exactly!!! Instead of slutty "wannabe barbies" like Nick Minaj, Rhianna, and Beyonce who do nothing but teach girls how to grind and be evil.
@newladylazarus Not just girls, boys need artists like Res too. Not those ass shakin, don´t have a talent stars. Guys need strong women to learn some respect.
i first heard it when it first came like once or twice and i was 10, but now that im hearing again, its hotter then from what i remember :) wut happen to music like this
It's a shame everyone always wants to put people in boxes. If you're a pretty Black, Asian or even a White girl, you can't do rock, or alternative. You've got to do that breathless azz pop music that anyone with half a brain can do. *sigh* I would love to see more minority women doin' it big in rock and more Janis Joplins and Joan Jetts.

@sirsir97 i believe it was written by santigold about mos def. they dated. at least that's what i read. hope i've helped shed some light on the matter :)
I was in middle school when I heard this I think. I always loved Res. This video is like the life I always wanted to have! She's amazingly beautiful, edgy, cool, sexy, but also earthy and natural. She is everything I've ever wanted to be!
i wish i had girls like her in m y life ! her music makes me happy and the anger of having to deal with all these souless bimbos leave when i listen to her and erykah badu !

I known about this ARTIST since I believe 2003. I saw her on MTV along with Craig David. It was a perfect match on that day....
Classified as Neo-Soul.
She was misclassified.
She incorporated SOUL with late 60's rock.
The infusion was perfect.
Her voice & pitch is beyond perfect.
Her band is in a class of its own → they musically brought it all, nothing was spared or neglected.
Listen to present day Rhianna.
I hear the comparison.
Res → YOU NEED TO COME BACK ↔ LOUD & FUKKIN PROUD !

I was in middle school when I heard this I think. I always loved Res. This video is like the life I always wanted to have! She's amazingly beautiful, edgy, cool, sexy, but also earthy and natural. She is everything I've ever wanted to be!
