I haven't watched this video in years, and yet listening to it now it takes me right back to the summer 4 years ago when I first watched it. How much life has changed since then. I really wish they were all still together, it's really hard to watch this after all that has happened. But the song is just as great and epic as it was back then.
All my friends laugh at me when I tell them my favorite band is Bnl....... but when I play some of there songs it gets stuck in their heads for a whole week go figure!
"all my stuffs completely natural, and when were dont we'll boil them down for glue that we can use to re-adhere your lips to mine if you were here" this line moves me
Every time I hear the guitar in this I get really happy and just start smiling. Then when they start singing I squeal a bit and clap. This song is just too good.
How about re-adhering these guys together. I'm ready for a reunion tour. Great harmony, equally great song, also some freakin awesome guitar work Ed. I'm going to spend all my practice time to this one.
Is there any way to put this on cd? So far youtube is the only place I can find it. I would love to be able to listen to the bathroom sessions anytime anywhere...does that sound weird? lol
what chords do you use in the chorus? it's not the same as what i found in a tab. in the tab the first part of the chorus (there's a lot i will never do) it was: G, G/F#, Cadd9, A7 and the second part it was the same except that instead of the Cadd9, it was Em7.
@tigerlily219 I never really thought of it that way but I completely agree. Both of them are amazing song writers and deserve more popularity then they've been given
This song, Steve popping from the background and doing up his fly, the positive energy. This is the best of BNL. (Not that Kev, Ty, and Jim don't add a lot.) It'll be sad with Steve gone, but I'm confident they'll keep up the energy.
I saw a show in Buffalo where they royally screwed this song up and ended up starting over from the beginning. It was pretty amazing.
well... he had to do what he had to do. I am just glad that Ed didn't leave. I think he has the better voice of the two, although Steve's voice is also amazing.
Something tells me Steve will be back sometime in some form. It's not like he left on bad feelings with the band. He wanted to branch out more, and with the band being less Ed/Steve writing, he had less creative output with the band.
Also, on the Ships and Dip cruises, Andy is there now, not exactly playing with the band, but that makes me think that it is very possible Steve will at least appear with them on the Ships and Dip cruises.
I think thier new material will be brilliant as always but I will miss the voice that i associate most with BNL. Good luck Steve. Can't wait for the new BNL and hope they keep touring.
this song is absolutely brilliant. enough said. the barenaked ladies are way underrated. everyone thinks oh yeah they sing "if i had 1,000,000 dollars and one week." If you actually took the time to listen to all of their material you'd see how completely amazing all their music is.
My sister and I love singing that last part with all the "bye's." I sing Eddie's part and she sings Steven's. We do that on most of their songs. ^_^ we're a bit obsessed. lol
While it's sad to see Steve leave, I think it'll be interesting to see how their next album sounds without his influence on the music and lyrics. I have a feeling Jim, Tyler and Kevin will all pitch more than ever to fill the sort of void Steve left behind.
I dont want to make the rest of the group feel insignificant but these two guys WERE the barenaked ladies, the first time i ever saw them, it was Ed and Steve on MTV playing if i had a 1,000,000$ live. And i honestly believe it will not be the same without Steve.
*sigh* it's a terrible thing to say because all the other guys do so much but it's true that these guys are insane together and as a pair they practically define the band. I mean, just this video shows how great they are together. It's going to be so different now : (
This song I believe is the one that show Ed and Steve's chemistry at it's best! they were fantastic together, and it's a shame that Steve left, but I think that all we BNL fans shouldn't dwell on the past and focus on the future. I for one am looking forward for their next album!
Hmmm, well it's not so much of us dwelling on the past as hoping he comes back, which i bet he will, who wouldn't? :)
But then again i get what you mean, and i as well am looking forward to their next album, there will probably be more rap judging on how good at rapping ed is. XD
This is my favourite BNL song. It's sad that Steve has left, but I think we'll see him in BNL again. I sure hope so.
It's funny, you think of BNL and the first thing I think of is Steve, but the more I listen to them over the years I realise how phenomenally talented Ed is as well. BNL will be fine without Steve, but they'd be better with him :)
This song always gets me out of a bad mood without fail. I had a bad day at work today, hearing about some stuff about this girl I really like. I listened to this song on my way home and I perked right up once the lyrics started that I started laughing and almost cried from the relief. BNL forever.
@Poxell91 I agree. It is a special song. I find that this acoustic version of the song is the best I have heard; better than the original in my opinion. Classic BNL.
Ed and Steve were co-lead singers, but in the group's early days, Steve sang the majority of the leads. I even read an interview with Ed a while back where he said Steve was the lead singer, and Ed was more like the "assistant lead singer".
He wanted to make his voice known, so he left to start a solo career. There was also that drug scandal, and Barenaked Ladies is known for being a "child-friendly" band. He might have been asked to leave because of the scandal, or he chose to leave so as to not hurt the image of BNL.
ok thanks i mean im a massive bnl fan but for some reason i never get any news about them lol, sad that steven left but i can see why he wants a solo career :)
I know, but it just doesn't feel right without him as a part of the band. I'm REALLY sad about that. Not that Ed isn't brilliant too, but together they were perfection!
I always see them when they come through town but now that Steve left, it just won't be the same. Maybe after a year or so he'll come to his senses and return.
simply awesome song... love the Barenaked Ladies!!!... They're amazing songcrafters, and the vocals are gorgeous... Love the bathroom sessions... Thank you for posting...

i love kevins face when he does the "bye bye bye" thing, he looks so into it, it hilarious. LOVE YOU KEVIN!!!!!my idol! haha, nah, both you guys are so talented, and im crazy impressed with Ed's playing. for like 2 minutes of the video i just sat and watched his fingers. great song, great, album, and crazy talent. CANADIAN TALENT IS THE BEST!!!!! my uncle's in the tragiacally hip, and he loves you guys, haah. keep it up!
He plays the accordian and mandolin too, (and I bet he could play the ukulele and a balalaika if he wanted to! :) good to see a BNL fan in the Nethelands!
Yeah, in addition to being one of the world´s greatest bassists (I think Jaco Pastorius is the only better one), Jim is a capable guitarist, capable pianist, and a very talented singer.
The Brothers Creeggan sadly don't have a great quality video out here on YouTube. They have one where they sing on the Chips 'nd Dips tour with Ed and Tyler (hilarious classic Tyler opening) worthwhile checking out. Also, Jim wife's a small vocal roll in the song Anna on the Moon.
Polliwog in a Bog is also sang by Jim, as well as Peterborough and the Kawarthas. He has a soothing voice, and when you hear him sing you wouldn't be surprised he named on of The Brother Creeggan albums "Sleepyhead"
I got to meet Jim and Andy in Salt Lake City when they toured for "Trunks". I asked Jim when they got on stage, and he said "Oh Aboot 11 o'clock"....I couldn't contain my grin when he said "about" like "a boot". :)
"it's aboot dignity, it's aboot respect!" :) yes I totally watched that movie! It was so cool, I knew they were playing a Jazz club, and I was downtown having dinner and I knew they were playing the club, so i stopped by at 8 PM and standing right at the entrance talking to the doorman was Jim. (He's tall!) So I shook his hand, and asked him what time they took the stage. He was really cool, and later I met Andy, he was nice too!
No, not a limited edition Taylor. Just a 910 in sunburst with what may or may not have been the standard inlay on the headstock at the time it was made.
Been to see these guys live a few times now and it's very rare that you find a band that play live and sound as perfect live as they do on their studio album. Some of the tightest and effortless i've ever had the pleasure to hear!

He plays the accordian and mandolin too, (and I bet he could play the ukulele and a balalaika if he wanted to! :) good to see a BNL fan in the Nethelands!

Hehe, you can't imagine how long I've been waiting for them to pay a visit to my lovely country.
Steve can smoke some of our famous grass with me, IT'S LEGAL HERE STEVE! =D
And yeah, Jim is quite the multinstrumentalist ^^
paytertje 3 years ago
You mean........Kevin.....right? :) Although Jim is quite the bassist, what with the standup bass and all, I'm sure he can play more instruments too!

Hahaha, I bet you watched South Park the Movie too. =DDD
Where did you meet them and did you only asked when they were gonna play? =O

I also met Steve, Ed, and Tyler in front of the House of Blues in New Orleans in 1996!

Looks like a Taylor Guitar

Its a special edition Taylor. You can tell from the symbol on the headstock.
Danklin24 3 years ago
Sorry, limited edition.
Danklin24 3 years ago
No, not a limited edition Taylor. Just a 910 in sunburst with what may or may not have been the standard inlay on the headstock at the time it was made.

Me too - just glad his clothes are on - since it's a bathroom and all ;-)
I have a new-found respect for this band and their terrific lyrics.

Been to see these guys live a few times now and it's very rare that you find a band that play live and sound as perfect live as they do on their studio album. Some of the tightest and effortless i've ever had the pleasure to hear!
