  • Hope others follow your lead this year. Its almost planting season again. Mix in some carbon with the soil - you will see an improvment in yields and flavours.

    Cheers

  • I can't express enough how much I love your videos.

  • I think you get so many hits just because your last name is Bieber.

Haha! Jk! Your videos are really inspiring keep the work up.

  • What you are doing is positively revolutionary: “Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can.” - John Wesley What an inspiring act of personal empowerment and individual initiative! Thank you for showing the members of that community (and globally here) how bonds of brotherhood are created in a simple garden. Sounds like the battle cry of a Vigilante Gardener
  • Awesome how a little garden can make a difference to a community :)

  • How can you eat your children ?

  • Thank you, and the Lord bless you!

  • lolololol gardeners are also faggots now

  • @blaugranelona You mean the skill to harvest your own food source without the need of money to buy it? Hmm, I guess all the farmers who make your food are faggots. Oh and don't forget just about everyone in the past centuries of mankind's existence which without the skill many of us would not have existed since food is a major necessity behind oxygen and water. Yeah, that really seems gay to me...

  • Come to Jesus and be saved. God loves you, and whoever believes that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for their sins, was buried and rose again will have eternal life in Heaven. Call upon the Lord Jesus Christ, and “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved,” - Acts 16:31

I hope that many citizens will learn from it after watching this awesome video. I am an avid gardener myself..Good luck for the next year's crops..God bless....

  • @GriftingGriff just like your self, for posting this comment.

  • why not own a farm????

  • ARESST THEM They Are not Above THE LAWR!11! that power cannot be abused

  • @pummi88 lol

  • @GriftingGriff What's wrong about it, if you are good in what you believe you are? And the attention he wants is to increase these activities and spread the idea around. I believe it's pretty cool, and I like the way he presents it. If everyone would do just little things, like this guy has done, trust me, world would be much better.

  • YOUR GIRLFRIWND IS HOT.

  • Dude.... That Was Bad Ass!

  • needs more girlfriend 2:10

  • Next video how to make your totally badass salsa

  • Cool beans! Whenever I hear about the loss of topsoil in our nation and how we won't have enough to grow our food, I can't help but wonder how much food could be grown if we actually used all the bits and pieces of unused land within our cities.

  • You sound like an NPR host (not necessarily a compliment). Still awesome video and project!

  • What a Trip.

  • I love this! I think it is great. Looking forward to seeing what you do next season.

    :)

  • Your note - John Wesley help found the Methodist Church... My dad is a Methodist Pastor...information I grew up with. Definitely think that note was left specifically for you, always a good feeling when people appreciate/are inspired by hard work. Enjoyed the video, keep up the good fight. -Josh

  • Is it marinated with Exhaust?

  • Very cool show. Really like what you're doing

  • your lemon squash looks a lot like a lemon cucumber.

  • Silly urbanites, nice garden bro and video!

  • um... not to rain on your parade here... but NYC soil, if you can even call it that, is saturated with heavy metals and PCBs. They come from diesel exhaust, illegal dumping, pollution and who knows where else. Many of the crops you planted are actually well know for their abilities to absorb minerals and compounds from the soil, both beneficial and harmful. In fact, there is a concept of using plants to clean polluted soils. It's called Phytoremediation. You may have poisoned people.

  • @gnu23 You are aware that the vast majority of commercially farmed vegetables are soaked in cancer causing pesticides and herbicides, on top of possibly being genetically modified. Then they are shipped by air, causing them to become irradiated. Think of the water in NYC taps. The exhaust people breathe in. The cigarettes they smoke. Antibiotics in red meat. Mercury in tuna. the list goes on. Traces of heavy metals picked up by your 'phytoremediation' is the least of a New Yorkers worries.

  • @liennto You are absolutely right, which is why I get my veggies from the Coop and not from a dog piss soaked sidewalk plot. I applaud what you're trying to do and I think more people should take control of their food. But are the residents of 8th Ave in Park Slope really the right demographic? There are many other streets in Brooklyn where people could actually benefit from your efforts. Next time dig out all the old soil, use at least 6"-10" of organic soil or, better yet, build a raised bed.

  • @gnu23 I think youre missing the point. What he's done here isn't about creating a viable food supply, but showing the public of how important even the smallest plot of land is. It's more of a living example that could get people thinking about sustainability. Give the guy a break, he had to sneak in there at midnight to weed it. You think he could get away with building a raised bed? He'd be fined, or worse. If even one person was inspired to make a rooftop or window garden, he succeeded.

  • @liennto Not missing the point at all. I completely agree with everything he's doing with the exception of his methods. The few inches of organic soil you see him lay down is not enough. The roots go deeper and straight into the polluted crap underneath. His motives are noble but once he starts handing out what I can factually say is toxic he is being irresponsible and dangerous. I live 4 blocks from this location, belong to a community garden and I know what I'm talking about.

  • @gnu23 Ok. I'll accept that. I guess he could have laid down a layer of root/weed stop before putting the soil down to stop the roots from going in to the old dirt, like a makeshift raised bed.

  • @gnu23

"Many of the crops you planted are actually well know for their abilities to absorb minerals and compounds from the soil, both beneficial and harmful."

    Mmm...new york diesel flavored tomatos.

  • @gnu23 You win the dick head award

  • @gnu23 so is it okay to plant a veggie garden in the suburbs of houston? Just asking you seemed informed.

  • Comment removed

  • @gnu23

    hahaaha

  • @gnu23 Oh well, guess the government should have fixed their damn soil when they had a chance.

  • @gnu23 "um...not to rain on your parade here....You may have poisoned people." Your opening line doesn't lubricate enough for your closing line.

  • @gnu23

You are aware that the pretty food you buy in stores is all full of pesticides, hormones, antibiotics (who knows what else) not to mention Roundup? It's in the seeds. This stuff is probably healthier!

  • @gnu23 If it's any consolation, in the last vid, he mentioned that they put down some new soil there...

  • You could narrate a movie or tv show...

  • Awesome. This is why unemployed people have no excuse. Welfare and food stamps dont help anyone. People should garden everywhere they can if they cant get a job. Thats what I would do. And I think by cleaning that up and putting it to good use, you have ownership of it.

  • That is awesome!

  • Tech glitch: No thembnail on FB

  • Dear Vigilante Gardener,

You ARE a true hero. Not only you made this spot in Brooklyn prettier and more useful, but you also introduced authentic and tasty vegetables to your neighbours ; and by doing this, you reinforced social link between people.

This is how cities should look like : green and friendly.

    Very inspiring work.

    Signed: a french admirer.

  • 4 people dont know what a tomato plant looks like. :(

  • @highspeedhamish They clicked the wrong button.

  • Your voice sounds like Ira Glass from NPR's "This American Life."

  • That is cool as hell. Good work there.

  • This was more badass than I expected it to be. In fact, I expected this to be a pretty pitiful vegetable garden, however I was quite impressed by the story. Keep it up. There needs to be more of this in our country. In our World even!

  • Guerilla gardening. That's the way of the urban landscape. Take back the blacktop and turn it green.

  • I think that was a lemon cucumber.

  • City folk and their over glorification of nature. If you love it so much why do you live in a concrete jungle?

  • This brought a huge smile to my face, thanks!

  • I can't believe the Church even thought of tearing it down. They had the time to tear down beauty but hadn't had time to to take care of it in the first place?

  • god damn hipsters

  • is this the guy that found the film in the snow?

  • "I knew what I had to do now. My girlfriend..."

    lol

  • Great Job! You should come over and visit some of our spot over here in Berlin!

  • Great stuff, fellow earthling! I respect, admire and fully support your initiative. i am surrounded by others like you (esp. my Lover:] & my parents/sibling)...and they make me *want* to be a better person.Life just seems better that way!

I doff my imaginary knitted hat to you & your bad-assery,my good man!!

  • Very cool video. I don't know if you're aware, but lead contamination is a concern in urban gardens. You may want to have that soil checked. Do a google search for "lead in urban gardens" for more info.

  • Congrats on your disproportionately hot girlfriend!!

  • i love what ur doing!!

  • Storytelling is a gift. You have it, my friend. In spades. (Hey! I used a gardening term!) It will be hard to match your "found photos" sequence, but that was one for the ages. Still one of my favorites, ever.

  • Bad ass vegetable garden.

  • OOPS!. I meant to type 'Pre-Teens'.

  • yhe modern hipee

  • I wonder what would happen if, say... a bunch of young kids, (ore-teens) from a local school did something like this. They could see 'their' garden every day going to or from school. Imagine the incredibly positive effect it would have!.

  • "and make it nice", if only we all did that to everything in this life.

  • Cool :)

  • sweeet

  • Epic!

  • ugh soooo inspiring ... can't wait till this summer to start a community garden!!

  • I found this surprisingly moving... (As both a lapsed catholic and a really poor gardner.)

  • It's was so refreshing to see how your garden developed, the people who came by to help and I just think the John Wesley quote capped it all really. Doin' good is good Todd. I'd love for you to do more videos....they've all been so great :)
