So what is the deal with baritones playing this role?!?! First it was Robert Westenberg (who replaced Patinkin on Broadway)then Philip Quast who is GREAT mind you, but I just don't understand how these baritones can handle such numbers as "Finishing the Hat". Not to say it can't be done it's just not in the "normal" baritone rang.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Philip Quast so much! And now I'm a fan of Maria Friedman. (I was already a fan of Sondheim :) ) I wish this was recorded! I love Bernadette Peters, but I love to hear Philip Quast in anything I can (which currently is only Les Miserables)
YAAAY!!! THANK YOU for this!!! I absolutely ADORE Philip Quast, and Maria Friedman has been a fav of mine for a while now...ever since I heard her in The Woman in White...she's so fantastic! And I've loved PQ even longer...what an amazing voice, acting ability, and man! He's really beautiful, too...lol ;) THANK YOU!!!
oooh, it's nice to hear a different take, since "Sunday" was not around long enough to have many interpretations! Maria has a lovely voice, and it's encouraging to know that it's not impossible for a soprano to take Dot's role (can you sense my wishful thinking?) Philip sounds good, too. And Stephen always sounds good :)
Why in the world was there not a recording this cast? Ugh. The singing sounds so much better than the recent revival.

Well there High Baritones' so they can handle low tenor roles such as George.

@Chriswren9 you know Philip Quast won a lot of awards for this role but it is hard to do this then go into South Pacific

Quast has some Mandy influence in his interp of the role for sure.

I wish this production has a CR. I think I'd like it better than the revival recording. But nothing can beat the original for me.

I think I like Phillip Quast better in this than in Les Mis. Even though, Mandy Patinkin will ALWAYS be George.

Maria Friedman is so fantastic. Why, oh why, didn't this production get a recording? I could listen to it forever!
