@gettingwarmer There are many safety systems to prevent an elevator from free falling. There are usually 6 or 8 cables suspending the elevator that are each capable of holding more than the elevators weight. If the elevator begins to travel too fast, the brakes will hold it. So you really have nothing to worry about!

do they light up the shaft only when people are working in them? when i look between the space between the building floor and the elevator car, its always dark! maybe something is in the way making it look dark! i'm afraid of elevators, falling down the shaft.
