@deadsenator My set up was a combination of different items plus software I wrote myself. A lot of that stuff isn't available any more and there is new technology by now that should be better. So it's a little hard to help since all my stuff is older.

I can't remember the brand right now, but it had a Sony EXView HAD chip. Not call cameras are created equal. There might be good pinhole cameras out there, but I believe pinhole cameras have a very wide angle of view and so faces would be REALLY small and video would be useless unless they're way up close to the camera. It cost me $1000 to catch him.

It's a Speco CVC637EX. There was way more than that needed. I had a special wireless transmitter/receiver and set up a computer to record when it detected motion. Quite a complicated setup. There must be something better now though.

Yeah, the camera was in plane view attached to the rear window, but was a small bullet-cam. The whole system cost me about $1,000 to build. It's too bad there isn't one of these you could rent.

Yep, pretty much. If he had used gloves and a mask, we couldn't have caught him on camera. BUT, if he would have done that, we would have put in better bait next time, then made sure we stayed up around the same time and ran down to bashed his head in with a BB bat, once the silent alarm was tripped. Thanks. Yeah, that's something I wanted to make sure of. I made sure it was high res. when setting it up. Of course my camera was sort of in plain view. It was attached to the rear window glass and pointing. All you'd have to do is look up to see it. He missed it. Most bait cameras need to be very hidden, so you have to use something the size of a quarter. Mine was big around as a quarter, but about 3 inches long with a cable hanging out of it. So damn proud of this video! :)
Can you show us what equipment you used and how you set up the cameras? My car was broken into last month and over $800 worth of items were stolen. We had a few dollar bills sitting in the car. That's what he grabbed. It's just the computer didn't start recording until 5 seconds after it got triggered to by the motion detector. It was a defect in the software. If the software had been working properly, you would have seen him open up the door. So he must have grabbed that within the first 5 seconds. The after that you see him picking up a bag of change. This all happened in 2004 and to this day I'm pretty proud of myself.

The idiot missed all the wireless camera gear (transmitter, batteries, etc.) that were in plain view in the trunk. WHY LEAVE ALL THIS STUFF IN YOUR CAR? My car is not worth stealing. And any stuff in there that might be worth stealing, is taken out every night. I cannot afford losing the car because I need it to go to work. It's an old one, it doesn't go fast and the rear window is broken, so only its contents would be interesting for possible thieves.
Ha. It was wireless, so only the camera,mic,transmitter was in the car. All recording was done in our apt. That was the only way to do it well. The benefit was- if he would have tried to steal the entire car, it would have recorded him doing so. He was breaking in people's cars even when there wasn't anything in them. Did you use one of those pinhole wireless cameras commonly found on eBay? I've seen such kits with reciever for as little as 50 dollars shipped. I ordered one myself, but it was defective and the range was limited.

I plan on it. It's not all that complicated, except the way I had it set up was. I need to see how well a car battery could run it (I used 2 alternating batteries), and an easier way to record the video. Otherwise it's pretty easy and I would like to put plans on my website at some point. The most important thing is to use a 1.2 ghz. video/audio transmitter, NOT 2.4 ghz. Oh, and record at full frame 640x480 or 720x480.

Thats the thing in todays world. It's literally mandatory to lock this, shut that etc. You cant just chill out and leave your car unlocked overnight and not worry about your deck missing.

It would need to cost around $1,000 to make any profit and that doesn't include the computer, although you could maybe use a Linux-based DVR, which would bring the cost to around $1,500 or so. There are like 10 pieces to that system too, so it's not all nice and together, but the video quality was top notch. Everything was off-the-shelf except for the simple motion detection/recording software I borrowed and changed.
Well, I can't argue with the tech because I just don't know enough about it. But if there was ever a way to market it as a service, I'd be interested, and I bet a lot of other people would be too. Regardless, good work for protecting your shit. You're the unsung hero.

@bsxiong Nope, just a decent bullet camera. Wasn't very hidden. I didn't care if he saw it or not, coz he would have still been caught. I can't remember the brand right now, but it had a Sony EXView HAD chip. Not call cameras are created equal. There might be good pinhole cameras out there, but I believe pinhole cameras have a very wide angle of view and so faces would be REALLY small and video would be useless unless they're way up close to the camera. It cost me $1000 to catch him.

It's a Speco CVC637EX. There was way more than that needed. I had a special wireless transmitter/receiver and set up a computer to record when it detected motion. Quite a complicated setup. There must be something better now though.

Yeah, the camera was in plane view attached to the rear window, but was a small bullet-cam. The whole system cost me about $1,000 to build. It's too bad there isn't one of these you could rent.

Yep, pretty much. If he had used gloves and a mask, we couldn't have caught him on camera. BUT, if he would have done that, we would have put in better bait next time, then made sure we stayed up around the same time and ran down to bashed his head in with a BB bat, once the silent alarm was tripped. Thanks. Yeah, that's something I wanted to make sure of. I made sure it was high res. when setting it up. Of course my camera was sort of in plain view. It was attached to the rear window glass and pointing. All you'd have to do is look up to see it. He missed it. Most bait cameras need to be very hidden, so you have to use something the size of a quarter. Mine was big around as a quarter, but about 3 inches long with a cable hanging out of it. So damn proud of this video! :)

We had a few dollar bills sitting in the car. That's what he grabbed. It's just the computer didn't start recording until 5 seconds after it got triggered to by the motion detector. It was a defect in the software. If the software had been working properly, you would have seen him open up the door. So he must have grabbed that within the first 5 seconds. The after that you see him picking up a bag of change. This all happened in 2004 and to this day I'm pretty proud of myself.

The idiot missed all the wireless camera gear (transmitter, batteries, etc.) that were in plain view in the trunk. WHY LEAVE ALL THIS STUFF IN YOUR CAR? My car is not worth stealing. And any stuff in there that might be worth stealing, is taken out every night. I cannot afford losing the car because I need it to go to work. It's an old one, it doesn't go fast and the rear window is broken, so only its contents would be interesting for possible thieves.

Ha. It was wireless, so only the camera,mic,transmitter was in the car. All recording was done in our apt. That was the only way to do it well. The benefit was- if he would have tried to steal the entire car, it would have recorded him doing so. He was breaking in people's cars even when there wasn't anything in them. Did you use one of those pinhole wireless cameras commonly found on eBay? I've seen such kits with reciever for as little as 50 dollars shipped. I ordered one myself, but it was defective and the range was limited.

I plan on it. It's not all that complicated, except the way I had it set up was. I need to see how well a car battery could run it (I used 2 alternating batteries), and an easier way to record the video. Otherwise it's pretty easy and I would like to put plans on my website at some point. The most important thing is to use a 1.2 ghz. video/audio transmitter, NOT 2.4 ghz. Oh, and record at full frame 640x480 or 720x480.

I know, but it would take a lot of money to put together systems like that. It would need to cost around $1,000 to make any profit and that doesn't include the computer, although you could maybe use a Linux-based DVR, which would bring the cost to around $1,500 or so. There are like 10 pieces to that system too, so it's not all nice and together, but the video quality was top notch. Everything was off-the-shelf except for the simple motion detection/recording software I borrowed and changed.
