I just relized something. It might not me right but i think that Madara found Obito when he was crushed and Mandara did a very powerful justu where they form together to increase power. Its just like the eternal technique only advanced to where there one person. (that would explain all the reasons Mandara is Tobi and all the reasons Obito is Tobi) When they fused together Obito probaly wanted to change names incase he somehow ran into Kakashi again while Mandara was in control over the fusion.

When Obito died and came to that crossroads between death and life, Madara met his spirit there and gave him the ultimatum of letting Madara's spirit take over so Obito can live again. that makes sense, each number is a page describing a certain ninja(pain), and teh seventh number is about nagato or the rinnegan's powers, it allows the user to see through the same eyes, and it allows the user to use all the elements.. also in saying that, maybe when mastered or triggered, like the sharingan, it can be improved, and a certain new skill can be attained, like the mangekyu sharingan can do amaterasu etc maybe the improved rinnegan allows a new jutsu to be created
