It is possible to avoid being shot down, but your character will die.

Right before the missile hits your helicopter, you have to restart the mission. Keep trying this until a checkpoint happens right before the missile hits. When it loads from this checkpoint, you can't see a rocket, but you'll hear an explosion. The helicopter will just keep going straight until you eventually die.
