Having read the description it seems even worse as the finder was obviously well aware of the value of the artwork, and hid it behind a false wall in her closet and only after exposure of the missing painting on television did she contact Sotherby's and it was Sotherby's who finally did the right thing and contacted the FBI. The fact that the woman had hidden the painting behind a false wall indicates she knew she should have contacted police. She should not be rewarded.

The thing is, in a free market, most of this type of talentless art would fail, since most people despise it (vast majority of people I talk to do NOT like modern art). The best art I see today is sci-fi/fantasy based, like Michael Whelan, Boris Vallejo, Luis Royo, Kurt Wenner, Rob Gonsalves, Julie Bell etc. Modern art is really a triumph of advertising and marketing. It sells literal junk for several million dollars.

How do people even determine what is valuable in art. Especially in like modern stuff. Abstract stuff just thrown on a canvas. I dont know maybe just play it up a lot. Tell the art community that they cant understand your art, act like a cockass, and throw paint on a canvas, then kill yourself. Seems like the recipe for being a legend these days.

Oh and something is only worth what someone will pay for it. The Mona Lisa is a priceless work of art and is not for sale, as far as I'm aware it's still hanging up in the Louvre and last appraisal was done many moons ago at $100 million. The figure "200 million" was pulled from the air. The true value is immaterial to this discussion anyway.

Actually, I just did some further research, it looks like this lady did return it to the original owners (which is the decent thing to do) and they sold it in auction and gave her $15,000 for finding it. Everyone is a winner! :o)

Sure you could, but you wouldn't get someone to pay a lot of money for it. People don't understand that the "art" by itself is not worth the money - its the story of the piece, its "provenance" and the significance of the artist. Just because a painting looks simple or a mess has no relevance to what its worth.
If I had a painting that was just a bunch of shades of blue, I would be a multi-millionaire if it was by a dead chap called Rothko.
