waaaaa all the other singers except mariah sang the A5 in pure chest! the others mixed their voices! now before u comment to my comment, pls look up what mixing means first for those who don't know. mariah was in pure chest that is why they all sounded clean and resonant!
No one sings A5 in "pure chest", pure chest stops at around F#4, above that is degrees of mixed voice. Belting keeps connection to the chest resonance but it's not the heavy muscle of chest voice per se.
@primohomme@primohomme but as you have just heard, mariah hit a5 using chest. if what you said were true about chest voice stopping at f4#, then are u saying mariah's hitting the note was a miracle? mariah and xtina are just among the very few singers who doesn't mix their voices. most, if not all, female singers mix their voice from c5. even celine with her powerful vocals mixes from eb5. mariah's a5 sounded purely her voice, with no distortion at all, a mark of a true chest register.
Well, with 400 years of vocal technique behind my statement...I can tell you that pure chest voice stops for females at F#4, yes, above that it's degrees of mixed voice, that it has a belting quality does not mean it's pure chest, only someone without any knowledge of vocal technique would think so. Belting does not equal pure chest voice. Anyways, don't put Mariah and Christina in the same phrase, Christina is shit and can't even sing the high notes in her own songs.
@mtanute That's also exactly why Christina fails. No mix. On top of that, no support, no resonance, just throat, jaw jutting, excessive tension, high larynx, unrelaxed tongue, limited belting range.
@Chimier yes! everyone things christina is so amazing, all thats happening is a bunch of strainig haha. finally someone noticed! i like mariahs A5 out of all these people, it doesnt sound whiny, it just sounds purely amazing LOL! but i gotta say patti labell. thats all i need to say.

cont'd Karen's runs combine jazz, classic gospel, new age gospel, rnb and unrivaled and matchless soul, expression and feeling. I wouldn't even classify LaShun as a vocalist who's vocal runs are conspicuous. winner: Karen Clark Sheard. FAIL...NEXT (copyright...Chimier lol)
Ok whoever posted that comment about karen ripping shun apart had to b drunk, i love them both very well true karen is effortless when it comes to the runs and lil tricks she does with her voice , as well as her range is also high as well but lashun has effortless power in her voice that is unmatched and im talkin about her natural voice let alone her belts, so see u dont need cheesecake u need to go do some homework and gret some facts , y dont u look at the song sing together and see !
I was not drunk... I was trying to make a point (that Karen is a phenomenal singer). Karen's belts are one of the most powerful in the gospel music industry (since we are speaking about gospel singers). I agree that Karen overdoes it sometimes but that is what makes Karen Karen. If you don't like her, leave her be :p
I'm guess it's the note and the octave; so if A5 is not a small sheet of paper but the fifth A above some point, what point? Is it the 5th A on a piano keyboard?

Comparison also flawed & inaccurate with sound levels of video either too loud or too soft with his favorite singers getting a loud boosted sound while others getting short shrift with the loudness levels too low. Not a fair comparison AT ALL. The poster needs to properly synchronize the many different recordings to an even sound level.
All the volume levels were the same. My favorite singers were not boosted up and my least favorite were not decreased in volume. Some singers were just louder than others. That's it.
Mariah only had notes on the A5! lol! Damn you Chimier lol! Just kidding. By now you know my favourites in this region of the voice are Patti, Aretha and Cyndi Lauper.
Great video. I never heard R F go so high so that was cool to hear and. Natalie is underrated and Lashun is a good vocalist who gets overlooked due to her singing gospel. Patti and Chaka can just go somewhere else IMO, they sounded the worse.
Yeah, that's how he sees her but he's entitled to his own opinion enweiz.. I like CK but if I don't have anything nice to say about other artists then Id rather not say it out of respect. I could express how I love her voice and how her belts sound like an instrument without saying 'unlike Aretha...' or 'unlike Patti...' But I know where he's coming from and he's just expressing his thoughts but I just find it unnecessary. I guess, that's just how it is if you're in an arguement. LOL =)
well, bjork is a unique type of singer...she's an extremely aquired taste. she's more known for her music overall rather than her voice much like radiohead. but that rollingstones list is very confused. they want to acknowledge singers and voices of a generation. it's hard when there are so many different genre and makin just one list. they should have broken it down in genres because i love kurt cobain and his voice just aches with pain but someone who doesnt list to him wont understand
well first off i know Bjork and i like her and her unique style.and its true they tried to squeeze in everything in that list its crazy and confusing.and a lot of people are angry at that list.yeah they should have broken it down in categories..but if you wanna count "overall" ability, then Chaka has it for she's truly original, highly artistic with brilliant musicianship, has sung and done justice to diverse genres thats why it think she deserves to be on that list but i guess she was overlooked.
oh yeah, chaka not being on that list is a great blasphemy to lovers of vocalist everywhere. that's why that's the only list that the rollingstones have come out with that i'll choose to ignore. i believe a lot of people were left out on that list or placed lower or higher than they should have.
true..like come on,,shes the Queen of Funk for dears sake..aint nobody's is like a staple song to singing competitions everywhere yet they still failed to recognize her? and they have yet to discover her true capabilities that would blow their minds..its ok i aint mad at that hugely flawed list considering the first lady of song,,Lady Ella wasnt listed in it too..and yeah,,i feel Kurt better than Bono.
The Rolling Stones list was based on singers of The Rock Era, so jazz singers like Ella would never have been included anyway unless the list was based on singers regardless of era.
id like to quote an interesting statement,,saying Chaka doesnt take her listeners on a journey of some woman's life...lol...could be the reason why Ashford & Simpsons couldnt think of a better person other than Chaka to sang the anthem "Im Every Woman"..lol..so much for being too critical...music critiques always associate the name Chaka with dynamism,,and dynamic usually dont go with "predictable"..and she's more of a "pocket" singer..a rare breed of a brilliant singer that is.
just because Chaka doesnt meet one person's musical taste doesnt mean that the person's opinion should be taken seriously because Chaka has proven herself in so many ways,,leaving their opinions as just opinions,,nothing that could change the facts about her..one would rather choose the less talented,,or the "typical" over an incredible,, multiple Grammy winning voice just because of their personal taste..oh well..
on the contrary to one's persons opinion,,real music critiques lavishing praise on Chaka like she was the 2nd coming of Jesus "which is what Bob Monaco 1 of Rufus' 1st producers called her when he 1st heard her.N the DB article it told how she turned the industry on it's ear upon her arrival & had more female vocalists imitating her than the law allowed..Quincy said she was the only female singer he really liked because she uses her voice like an instrument & has an organic approach to singing.
IMO Aretha is the best high belter here. Her belts arent as sharp soundng as some of these women hers have a soft sounding quality to them but and the same time its really high. One person here whose high belts I dont like are Lashaun's I dont her tone up their at all to raspy/shreddy for my ears.
is it just me or does Arethra have one way of hitting them top notes? not a lot of variety. i dont tink she would be able to keep up with Lashun Patti and Chaka.
but that's not to say they aren't good. the rasp in it adds something...
Chaka's brilliant combination of dynamics,,unique tone,,phrasing and vocal arrangement in her Bb5 here,,are the major forces that won her a Grammy in the "best vocal arrangement" category...an incredible magnitude of talent.
Chaka's primal wail is what many anticipate most when listening to Chaka..her wails are almost mandatory..to hear Chaka blast her notes in an organic form,,is like a liberating experience..Chaka's intense wails are part of her x-factor,,among many other qualities..the way she obliterates(in a good way) the verses or chorus with her wails is just so incredible and connected to the song..although Chaka could take on a song in so many ways,,a Chaka experience is just incomplete without her wails.
and theres nothing else we can take away from Chaka..she's got everything and then some..thats why Quincy Jones,,a man who has worked with the likes of Billie,,Aretha and such,, crowned Chaka as "America's premier female vocalist"..
are they using it to make music, or just vocalize? does it thrill to the climax? does it serve the piece? is it self-indulgent hollering in an attempt to be impressive and show off? or is it music?
and then the sound
does it sound good? or does it sound like pinched harsh screaming that makes you want to press the mute button to get some relief from the assault on your ears?
Chaka sounded strong,,great and effortless at Bb5's with unique sort of brassy overtones up there..Chaka's the dynamic package..she has many vocal groupies under her belt..her belting style as displayed here is truly bold and distinctive with razor sharp timing and pitching,,her other styles ranges from powerful to earthy,,sultry,,soulful,,gritty,,colorful....with various musical elements injected in her interpretations Chaka is truly outstanding and impeccable!! shes the Queen of Funk!!
chakas belts are on top of of huge instrumental arrangements, which can take away some of her sound. sometimes i would love to listen to a night in tunisia acapella. songs where chakas belts arnt being rivaled by huge arrangements are "got to be there" "stay" "sweet thing" "im every woman" etc. these songs help you here her true power.
Aretha and Patti rule this register.. Aretha jst stirs something in my soul in this register.. she isnt just about the notes, her tone has this amazing soulful effect.. and i mean patti is patti.. the control she has in this range is beyond incredible
Chaka gets tons of love,,,but most of her fans couldnt be bothered about this comparative stuffs,,,because her musicality is what matters to them most...but haters will always be there to hate...lol
HAHA!!! im not discussing anything with anybody..im just here to do Chaka some justice because i hate to see some random user spreading some misleading words about her.
her creativity is not what its reputed to be. and rhythmically shes always so bland. shes never in front of or behind the beat. her phrases are always very predictable. and her sound isnt hypnotic. she doesnt bring you in with her personality, she doesnt bring a character to life, or take you on the journey of some womans life, and her sound is just too throaty and pinched
I KNOW !!! it seriously bugs me... i don't get how its logical to this person that those notes were mixed and that whitney has whistle register and that whitney hits notes up to E5 in pure chest... i LOVE whitney.. but she dsnt NEED to be made any better than she already is .. that woman is the definition of music.. dnt ruin her legacy !!
Gosh I'v never met people like this in real life. They think their fav singer is god it's kinda sickening. I'v met 3 stans Kmaur21(whitney),Epsma (christina stan) and Thequeenaretha(aretha stan).
I know... ppl need to start admitting that all singers have areas of weaknesses.. n that OPINIONS ARE NOT FACTS !!! i jst ignore the christina ones i mean they gotta be on something..im sorry but christina does shout sometimes rather than belt and she does way too much...Aretha's great bt don't force it on ppl to think shes the best..
Well before you were arguing with me. One a MariahFan started a whole fight with me. You ain't no damn child. Stop acting like genius3495 is your momma. And for your information Aretha isnt the only singer i listen to. She is my favorite singer but their are tons of singer i love and listen to. Donny Hathaway, Roberta Flack, Mahalia Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sintara etc. You don't know what i like and frankly you don't know what real music is. You are stuck on MC.
There is no such thing as "Real" music you twit! I'v told you that music is fluid there is not right or wrong in it. In your ears those singers might be amazing but to everyone they might not.
Oh was that directed to me. Because i don't a damn thing on anyone. Sweethheart i could care less if you like her or not. My problem is when people talk about her like a dog.
Ummm.. i dnt think i even mentioned ur name... I said Aretha's a great singer but she souldn't be forced on people... if ppl think britney spears is the premiere vocalist of all time.. it's their opinion u dont have to write them essays tryin g to change their minds
Well i felt that your comment was meant for me. Like i said don't care if you like Aretha or not but my problem really is when people talk bad about her.
Hold up don't put me into your conversations! You got me fucked the hell up! I don't think of Aretha as god and i don't care for you bitching and putting my name in it. It seems that you are the one that is stuck on me and don't have a life because i said what i said and left and you are still bitching about it. You are pathetic.
I like how Mariah's A5 sounds different than everyone else's upper chest belts...and she's not even a soprano...
Why is that? Is it because her belts are a different kind of mix...

Great video. I never heard R F go so high so that was cool to hear and. Natalie is underrated and Lashun is a good vocalist who gets overlooked due to her singing gospel. Patti and Chaka can just go somewhere else IMO, they sounded the worse.
Cano1478 2 years ago
ok paddey.. we get the point lol.
Chaka's a singer's singer. =]
xolilbraxo1993 2 years ago
Yeah, that's how he sees her but he's entitled to his own opinion enweiz.. I like CK but if I don't have anything nice to say about other artists then Id rather not say it out of respect. I could express how I love her voice and how her belts sound like an instrument without saying 'unlike Aretha...' or 'unlike Patti...' But I know where he's coming from and he's just expressing his thoughts but I just find it unnecessary. I guess, that's just how it is if you're in an arguement. LOL =)

what do you expect from the Rollingstones,,they even ranked Bjork higher than the real singers..
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
well, bjork is a unique type of singer...she's an extremely aquired taste. she's more known for her music overall rather than her voice much like radiohead. but that rollingstones list is very confused. they want to acknowledge singers and voices of a generation. it's hard when there are so many different genre and makin just one list. they should have broken it down in genres because i love kurt cobain and his voice just aches with pain but someone who doesnt list to him wont understand
agators212 2 years ago
well first off i know Bjork and i like her and her unique style.and its true they tried to squeeze in everything in that list its crazy and confusing.and a lot of people are angry at that list.yeah they should have broken it down in categories..but if you wanna count "overall" ability, then Chaka has it for she's truly original, highly artistic with brilliant musicianship, has sung and done justice to diverse genres thats why it think she deserves to be on that list but i guess she was overlooked.
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
oh yeah, chaka not being on that list is a great blasphemy to lovers of vocalist everywhere. that's why that's the only list that the rollingstones have come out with that i'll choose to ignore. i believe a lot of people were left out on that list or placed lower or higher than they should have.
agators212 2 years ago
true..like come on,,shes the Queen of Funk for dears sake..aint nobody's is like a staple song to singing competitions everywhere yet they still failed to recognize her? and they have yet to discover her true capabilities that would blow their minds..its ok i aint mad at that hugely flawed list considering the first lady of song,,Lady Ella wasnt listed in it too..and yeah,,i feel Kurt better than Bono.
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
The Rolling Stones list was based on singers of The Rock Era, so jazz singers like Ella would never have been included anyway unless the list was based on singers regardless of era.
Chimier 2 years ago
oh yeah i forgot about that...well a lot of brilliant singers and pioneers werent included anyways so yeah.
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
im going with Quincy Jones statements,,,"America's premier female vocalist"...im not afraid to express my opinions too..lol
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
id like to quote an interesting statement,,saying Chaka doesnt take her listeners on a journey of some woman's life...lol...could be the reason why Ashford & Simpsons couldnt think of a better person other than Chaka to sang the anthem "Im Every Woman"..lol..so much for being too critical...music critiques always associate the name Chaka with dynamism,,and dynamic usually dont go with "predictable"..and she's more of a "pocket" singer..a rare breed of a brilliant singer that is.
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
just because Chaka doesnt meet one person's musical taste doesnt mean that the person's opinion should be taken seriously because Chaka has proven herself in so many ways,,leaving their opinions as just opinions,,nothing that could change the facts about her..one would rather choose the less talented,,or the "typical" over an incredible,, multiple Grammy winning voice just because of their personal taste..oh well..
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
on the contrary to one's persons opinion,,real music critiques lavishing praise on Chaka like she was the 2nd coming of Jesus "which is what Bob Monaco 1 of Rufus' 1st producers called her when he 1st heard her.N the DB article it told how she turned the industry on it's ear upon her arrival & had more female vocalists imitating her than the law allowed..Quincy said she was the only female singer he really liked because she uses her voice like an instrument & has an organic approach to singing.

Isnt jhds Bb5 a B5?
IloveArethaFranklin 2 years ago
It peaks at a B5, but it's mostly Bb5.
Chimier 2 years ago
IMO Aretha is the best high belter here. Her belts arent as sharp soundng as some of these women hers have a soft sounding quality to them but and the same time its really high. One person here whose high belts I dont like are Lashaun's I dont her tone up their at all to raspy/shreddy for my ears.
T2luvs 2 years ago
is it just me or does Arethra have one way of hitting them top notes? not a lot of variety. i dont tink she would be able to keep up with Lashun Patti and Chaka.
but that's not to say they aren't good. the rasp in it adds something...
happylarry 2 years ago
Chaka's brilliant combination of dynamics,,unique tone,,phrasing and vocal arrangement in her Bb5 here,,are the major forces that won her a Grammy in the "best vocal arrangement" category...an incredible magnitude of talent.
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
Chaka's primal wail is what many anticipate most when listening to Chaka..her wails are almost mandatory..to hear Chaka blast her notes in an organic form,,is like a liberating experience..Chaka's intense wails are part of her x-factor,,among many other qualities..the way she obliterates(in a good way) the verses or chorus with her wails is just so incredible and connected to the song..although Chaka could take on a song in so many ways,,a Chaka experience is just incomplete without her wails.
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
and theres nothing else we can take away from Chaka..she's got everything and then some..thats why Quincy Jones,,a man who has worked with the likes of Billie,,Aretha and such,, crowned Chaka as "America's premier female vocalist"..
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
i mean everyones impressive for being able to do this, i dont deny that. but whether or not they should is the question
theblueangel28 2 years ago
True
Chimier 2 years ago
what do you mean?
IloveArethaFranklin 2 years ago
are they using it to make music, or just vocalize? does it thrill to the climax? does it serve the piece? is it self-indulgent hollering in an attempt to be impressive and show off? or is it music?
and then the sound
does it sound good? or does it sound like pinched harsh screaming that makes you want to press the mute button to get some relief from the assault on your ears?
theblueangel28 2 years ago
Chaka sounded strong,,great and effortless at Bb5's with unique sort of brassy overtones up there..Chaka's the dynamic package..she has many vocal groupies under her belt..her belting style as displayed here is truly bold and distinctive with razor sharp timing and pitching,,her other styles ranges from powerful to earthy,,sultry,,soulful,,gritty,,colorful....with various musical elements injected in her interpretations Chaka is truly outstanding and impeccable!! shes the Queen of Funk!!
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
chakas belts are on top of of huge instrumental arrangements, which can take away some of her sound. sometimes i would love to listen to a night in tunisia acapella. songs where chakas belts arnt being rivaled by huge arrangements are "got to be there" "stay" "sweet thing" "im every woman" etc. these songs help you here her true power.
cmelmoneyman 2 years ago
Aretha and Patti rule this register.. Aretha jst stirs something in my soul in this register.. she isnt just about the notes, her tone has this amazing soulful effect.. and i mean patti is patti.. the control she has in this range is beyond incredible

How about Blu Cantrell's B5? What did you think?
Chimier 2 years ago
oh i missed her. she was in the yes column. i thought it was good, not too grating
Melbas ability to hold that note was amazing, it was just that i didnt like the sound
theblueangel28 2 years ago
I didn't like Melba's sound either. It was only the breath control. That's why it's one of my favorites.
Chimier 2 years ago
not enough people are talking about her....
i always thought that was a Bb5 tho. i think hers were better than Arethra's, mayb i need to listen again, but she done more with it.
i would have thought she wouldn't of had range if i didn't listen to her music.... can't judge an artist by the album cover.

poor Chaka gets no love.
T2luvs 2 years ago
Chaka gets tons of love,,,but most of her fans couldnt be bothered about this comparative stuffs,,,because her musicality is what matters to them most...but haters will always be there to hate...lol
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
Come on Paddey, don't get into another discussion with that major Chaka hater! LOL
FunkYluvsJazZ 2 years ago
HAHA!!! im not discussing anything with anybody..im just here to do Chaka some justice because i hate to see some random user spreading some misleading words about her.
paddeyOmalley 2 years ago
not from me she doesnt
i just dont care for anything she does
her creativity is not what its reputed to be. and rhythmically shes always so bland. shes never in front of or behind the beat. her phrases are always very predictable. and her sound isnt hypnotic. she doesnt bring you in with her personality, she doesnt bring a character to life, or take you on the journey of some womans life, and her sound is just too throaty and pinched
but yes her control and range is very incredible
theblueangel28 2 years ago
YES!
this is like.. the most anticipated video of the summer lol
loveee it. glad to see anika finally get some recognition in these types of vids =]

that me me me was in pure head.. what are you saying.. whitney's limit is G#5 in mixed.. stop trippin dude
its annoying ur rly misleading a lot of people. You can think what you want but don't mislead other fans.
genius3495 2 years ago
Ignore him.. He's....hmmmm...
Chimier 2 years ago
I KNOW !!! it seriously bugs me... i don't get how its logical to this person that those notes were mixed and that whitney has whistle register and that whitney hits notes up to E5 in pure chest... i LOVE whitney.. but she dsnt NEED to be made any better than she already is .. that woman is the definition of music.. dnt ruin her legacy !!
PS: sorry im venting at u (A)
genius3495 2 years ago
Gosh I'v never met people like this in real life. They think their fav singer is god it's kinda sickening. I'v met 3 stans Kmaur21(whitney),Epsma (christina stan) and Thequeenaretha(aretha stan).
eternalsilverlight 2 years ago
I know... ppl need to start admitting that all singers have areas of weaknesses.. n that OPINIONS ARE NOT FACTS !!! i jst ignore the christina ones i mean they gotta be on something..im sorry but christina does shout sometimes rather than belt and she does way too much...Aretha's great bt don't force it on ppl to think shes the best..
genius3495 2 years ago
I'v been arguing with Thequeenaretha and seriously she needs help. She thinks the only real music is aretha's music.
eternalsilverlight 2 years ago
Well before you were arguing with me. One a MariahFan started a whole fight with me. You ain't no damn child. Stop acting like genius3495 is your momma. And for your information Aretha isnt the only singer i listen to. She is my favorite singer but their are tons of singer i love and listen to. Donny Hathaway, Roberta Flack, Mahalia Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sintara etc. You don't know what i like and frankly you don't know what real music is. You are stuck on MC.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
There is no such thing as "Real" music you twit! I'v told you that music is fluid there is not right or wrong in it. In your ears those singers might be amazing but to everyone they might not.
eternalsilverlight 2 years ago
That is a bunch of crap! Those singers i named are real singer and are better than any of the wannabes today.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
Oh was that directed to me. Because i don't a damn thing on anyone. Sweethheart i could care less if you like her or not. My problem is when people talk about her like a dog.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
Ummm.. i dnt think i even mentioned ur name... I said Aretha's a great singer but she souldn't be forced on people... if ppl think britney spears is the premiere vocalist of all time.. it's their opinion u dont have to write them essays tryin g to change their minds
genius3495 2 years ago
Well i felt that your comment was meant for me. Like i said don't care if you like Aretha or not but my problem really is when people talk bad about her.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
Hold up don't put me into your conversations! You got me fucked the hell up! I don't think of Aretha as god and i don't care for you bitching and putting my name in it. It seems that you are the one that is stuck on me and don't have a life because i said what i said and left and you are still bitching about it. You are pathetic.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
Didn't I tell you on the last video I was done with you?Keep it like that bitch
eternalsilverlight 2 years ago
Well if you were done than why did you put my name into your conversation. You got your ass on here bitching to someon else. That is pathetic!
