I'm not sure if you know this, but being stabbed can be a lot more dangerous than being punched. In the final fight scene, Ip man didn't have to watch his back because there were 8 armed men behind him. All he had to do is focus on one person. This too is common sense.

1. The sheer amount of men stops your first arguments. (They were part of a martial arts gang) They may have been a little bit smaller than the boxer, but when you combine their total weight, that = several tons attacking with WEAPONS from several angles simultaneously.
2. Gloves are cushions on your hands. They reduce impact and stop the person wearing them from grabbing and etc. They DO protect your hands, but it's obvious that they also reduce damage to the other person.

@Clonetrooper466 Have you even boxed before? If the boxer wasn't wearing gloves, his fists would've taken more damage than IP's face. And you still take huge punishment from those boxing gloves.
Despite lot of Hollywood action, portion of it was still realistic. The boxer simply outpowering and taking more punches than IP man is realistic. The feeling of getting punched at 9:00 is pretty realistic too.
Besides, the point of this movie was to entertain, not to satisfy your delusion of a fight

If you have ever gotten into a real fight you would know that striking a man's head is murder on the hand because of the strength of the frontal bone, maxilla, and zygomatic. It actually cuts the hands if the strike doesn't glance a bit. Its why boxer's try to aim for the vegus nerve under the jaw.
