Singapore: look at what has happened since its independence. it educated its people well, speak both english and chinese. GDP gone up - higher than some developed countries. Hard-working and more disciplined.

But I think it is difficult to deny that it is a very efficient and effective country, considering all its limitations, from no natural resources to no land to perhaps occasionally hostile neigbors. Any opposition party should at least offer a viable alternative in credible governing platform instead of just mocking LKY or LSL. Otherwise, Singaporeans are matured and sophisticated enough to discern the differences.

By the time, unemployment would hit sky high and the citizens are dependent of their govt to save their jobs. Many things has been done for us. It's not like they has been taking their salary for good and has done nothing to improve our country. People complain about ERP and stuff. So do you have a better idea to reduce traffic jams in the CBD area? ERP wouldn't even have surfaced if we didn't face land constraint in the first place. Without COE, you would have to take at least 2hr to reach home

Why complain so much about Singapore government? If the citizens have jobs, have a home to live in and do not live in poverty that means the government is doing an alright job. Yes, alternatively you can have freedom of speech, have riots on the street, high crime rates and not being able to come out at night. If you do not like the country move out of it.

Citizens in Singapore do not benefit from a minimum wage like other MEDCs. They live in small, hot and broing apartments and when the government fucks up they don't even know about it and hence they cannot hold them to account and choose an alternative party.

I've lived in Australia for 2 years now, been to Singapore 4 times.
Singapore: look at what has happened since its independence. it educated its people well, speak both english and chinese. GDP gone up - higher than some developed countries. Hard-working and more disciplined.
Australia: relaxed and complacent. too much of a natural resources. Rudd government is good. older generations understand, academia understands. general public, young people, is a bit inward-looking. too proud of the luck.

There are many perspectives to view Singapore. But I think it is difficult to deny that it is a very efficient and effective country, considering all its limitations, from no natural resources to no land to perhaps occasionally hostile neigbors. Any opposition party should at least offer a viable alternative in credible governing platform instead of just mocking LKY or LSL. Otherwise, Singaporeans are matured and sophisticated enough to discern the differences.

On the other hand, what this society should emulate is social responsibility and maturity. It has been said that the best type of government is a benevolent dictatorship and the worst kind of government is a malevolent dictatorship.
For a long time, Singapore has had the first kind of government, and as a result they have the highest standard of living in Asia, the second highest literacy rate (after Japan) and are a modern, technologically advanced, socially progressive country in a region that comprises of mostly 3rd world sh*tholes.
It's a pretty good trade off.

I recognise the wage gap, but you are incorrect that it one of the highest in the world. But compared to western democracies it is fairly wide.
On the other hand, the Singapore government is able to subsidise housing (HDB) which consumes up to 50% of disposable income in some western democracies.
Lastly, consider the region. The largest income group in Spore is 1000-2000SGD per month, which is 2428-4856 Malaysian Ringgit or 6,733,000-13,546,000 Indonesian Rupiah or 4934-9869 Chinese Yuan!

whether or not the dictatorship is benevolent or malevolent depends on the integrity of the individuals within the government. you cannot expect these individuals to outlive the next 50 years or more. a dictatorship is a dictatorship.
"3rd world sh*tholes" they may be, its better to be poor and enjoy high quality of life than to be poor in a rich city. singapore's GDP is lower than malaysia, thailand and indonesia despite these countries having large areas of rural land.

Wikipedia and Google public data (just search Indonesia GDP in google to see what I mean). CIA world fact book used to be the most up to date, but now the combination of Google and Wikipedia answers pretty much all questions.
I know that some countries manipulate their GDP numbers, but most are pretty accurate these days (with the exception of probably China).

There is no question that the ministers' salary is high. LKY definitely deserves well above what he is currently paid.
His intention is to use high salary to attract talent. We can agree that not all are talented but we must remember also that all talented do not want to join the Government.
Singapore under LKY accumulated the current net worth of about S$500 bn.
Can CSJ manage it? So see the big picture. If you average LKY's salaries since day 1 it is very cheap.

I do not agree that high salary is the only or main factor that draws talent. If that is the general rule, then the government of the various more established countries are untalented by comparison. Secondly, dividing a person's salary over the many years since day 1 is a poor calculation. I'm sure if the math is done since he came into power, vs the wages of an equivalent of a more established country in the same amount of time, his salary would have been much more.

Singapore is not a bad country. It's indeed a very good country in my book because most if not all its citizens are well taken care of by the system. Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, many more, and your neighboring friend.. Indonesia, take a look at the life of their citizens. It's no doubt there are rooms for improvement in Singapore, so are all countries in the world. For the least, most Singaporeans don't have to leave their homeland and settle in another country for a better life.
