@MrRoyalFatness - Even Flynn knew it was a dive. He said " all I'll say is I threw a right hand and Dempsey Fell." Dempsey was literally living day to day, he needed the dough, thats why he never really liked talking about the fight in later years.
I love Dempsey and Tyson was a huge fan of Dempsey, Tyson's head movement reminds me of Dempsey. However, Dempsey didn't have to fight black men. That is a fact. I'm not saying he would have lost, I heard the number black contender was not really to be feared, but it will always leave that question mark. Rocky Marciano fought fighter of any race. I think Marciano would have beaten Dempsey. Marciano was a tough SOB.
@sinusbradycardia Absolutely false statement you made regarding Dempsey not fighting black fighters. He fought black fighters before he was champ. Never defended his title against a black fighter, not the same thing. In every camp he hired black contenders to spar, including top contenders. Dempsey was no racist. Marciano wouldn't last two rounds with Dempsey. Agreed Marciano was a tough SOB.
@1saxonwolf Ok, I took it out of context then. Larry Merchant once said Dempsey didn't have to fight black fighters, he should have said he had no title defenses against black fighters. As far as KOing Marciano, well Marciano was never ko'ed and Dempsey was, by "Fireman" Jim Flynn in the 1st round. Dempsey may have been young and inexperienced, but he was ko'ed. I would love to see these guys go at it. Along with Dempsey vs Joe Louis.
@sinusbradycardia Unfortunately, so called experts get it wrong. Flynn KO is questionable. Dempsey never admitted to taking a dive to the public. Close associates said he did. He was broke, needed $, got few hundred $. He partnered with Kearns/Hayes shortly afterward & started his ascent. He Ko'd Flynn year later with 1 punch.
Those would be exciting matches. IMO Dempsey KO's both.
@1saxonwolf The dive is a possibility. Dempsey was a great fighter and for only being 185lbs, I would have to rate him pound for pound one of the hardest punchers in history. I saw a slomo video of Dempsey's muscle's. He wasn't by no means muscle bound and had strong thin limps, but the one thing that stood out about his physique was his back muscles. Again not muscle bound, but was very muscler in the back. Tommy Hearns had a nice muscler back.
@sinusbradycardia Dempsey was a laborer as a teenager. He developed his body thru hard work in the fields, mines etc. His title reign weight was roughly 188=194 lbs. His listed body measurements were that of a heavier man. He trained down to around 190 lbs for his fights ,feeling it the best weight to fight hard for 15 + rounds. He was a beast.
Funny story actually... Dempsey had a few of his left ribs broken and/or bent by a bodyshot from Flynn, was left unconscious after the KO and had his purse looted while he was out. Flynn may have been little more than a journeyman (just as Jack at this point of his career), but he was a fully grown man, much larger of stature than Jack. The important thing is that Jack never went down for the count again.
@MrRoyalFatness There's many apparent false stories about that fight & much confusion. Dempsey didn't have ribs broke against Flynn. It was JL Johnson fight. He wasn't left unconscious& purse stolen, that was Sudenberg fight. Flynn was 37 yrs & had 93 fights, already fought for title twice. Been fighting since 1899. Dempsey was only 21 & a nobody. Flynn was 5' 9 1/2'', Dempsey 6' 1. Many involved with the fight admitted a fix. $500 to take a dive, JD needed $. Yr later he Ko Flynn 1 rnd.
I think like with EVERY sport and most things in general in life. People improve constantly, get more professional, improved diet, training, conditioning, better technique and knowledge. Watching these fights from the 50's/60's is like watching 2 drunk dads scrapping in a car park! But our grand kids will be saying the same about Floyd & manny
Boxing in 50s/60s had evolved quite a lot already. Watch Sugar Ray Robinson or Muhammad Ali in 60s. They put on fights and showed show amazing technique that none of the fighters today are capable of.
From Dempsey's times boxing has evolved a lot but Dempsey was one of the pioneers of this sport. His bobbing and weaving style had an huge impact to later generation fighters. He was true professional, first superstar in boxing and one of the first ones throughout sports in general.
@fistking yeah dude youre entitled to your opinion but honestly the speed and power that this little guy brought against bigger opponents is truly staggering.
This was a man who pretty much pioneered head movement, which he did not because some one taught him or because he sparred at some boxing gym, but because he handed guys their ass regularly in every bar and fight he walked into. Talk about the old school of hard knocks try learning boxing yourself by brawling.
I agree with marciano beating a prime Joe Louis and dempsey..but I feel slightly different imho:) 1-Ali 2-Larry Holmes 3-Prime Sonny Liston 4-Lennox Lewis 5-George Foreman 6- Tyson 7-Marciano 8-Joe Louis 9-Joe Frazier 10-Jack Dempsey All opinion everyone is different:)
top 2 comments made by BNP racist clearly, dempsey was not better than sugar ray, you just jealuos, seconde dempsey even said he was scared of sam langford let alone MODERN boxers black and white
@B04Jordan Did you know that Jack Johnson ducked Sam Langford.....as for some of the crap these other guys say about Dempsey its laughable...Yes He Was A Great Figther even a Top 10 Champ but no where near the top 3....Dempsey would have won ever round vs Marciano until Rocky Ko'ed him....Dempsey would have had next to no chance vs Ali and Holmes....in fact i am pretty sure he wouldn't Handle Louis....and maybe maybe Not Tyson
@B04Jordan The Greatest Champs ever in order...Ali....Marciano...Louis...the 2 most underated ever Holmes and Tunney....fights are about styles Marciano would have beat Louis even when Louis was Prime....if Dempsey couldn't handle the excellent boxing skills of Tunney he wouldn't have a prayer vs Ali....Marciano would wear Dempsey down and when the late rounds came he'de beat him like a drum
@1saxonwolf not only do i know who he is i met him once in 1988 i also had the pleasure of meeting Gil Clancey about 15 times.
Ray Arcel did tell me he thought Jack Dempsey was about the 4th best ever.
In fact i asked Arcel who he thought would win a Figth Between Louis and Tyson (you have to remember this was when Tyson was 21 Years Old) He Said and I quote "My Advice to Joe Would be don't show up"
It was Gil Clanceys Opinion that the best Ever were Louis, Marciano, Ali in that order.
@renduke You also have beachfront property to sell in phoenix ? Nah, Arcel said too many times to too many people in print & recorded video his thoughts on Dempsey. Best HW he ever saw. Louis second. He was quoted as saying Dempsey would "kill" Marciano in a round, Casey archives. Glancy never saw Dempsey fight. Most overrated boxer by neophytes, Ali.
@1saxonwolf you're such an idiot you never saw him figth either...Clancey was probably old enough to be your father....2. If I had to reach in my pocket I'de bet Ali VS Marciano.....3...Louis had an average chin Marciano AND Tyson would BOTH beat a prime Louis
@1saxonwolf Arcel put Jack Johnson AND Joe Louis Higher then Dempsey...he also thought Dempsey and Ali were about even...those are his views not mine....Sorry if it doesn't agree with your twisted idea of who is best
@renduke Aren't u about 50? Hoping to discuss without childish behavior. Glancy is respected. My point about him not seeing Dempsey fight is that he couldn't/wouldn't judge a fighter he never witnessed. Arcel/Dundee both would say I never saw him fight, I heard he was great regarding fighters before there respective times. Arcel said clearly Dempsey would beat any fighter after him. Period!.He rated Louis 2nd. I can cite my reference1 You can't! Your imaginary conversation,LMAO.
@1saxonwolf and you judging dempsey without seeing him..unless you're about 102...the pot calling the kettle black i see....just go away with your non sense
@renduke There's a difference between an opinion from someone like Arcel, Dundee, Glancy & me or you. There opinion has significance, ours doesn't. I have plenty of sense in my argument, been around world class fighters/trainers many years. You ?
@1saxonwolf well clancey opinion has significance huh ? ok great because he didn;t have dempsey in his top 5 or 6....Clancey had 1 Louis, 2 Marciano, 3 Ali
Arcel had 1 Jack Johnson..2 Joe Louis, 3 Bacially a tie between Dempsey and Ali
@renduke -Your comment that Arcel thought Dempsey was the 4th best caught my attention. Every interview i've ever seen with Arcel talking about the heavys,he always called Dempsey the best.
@1899sharkey I believe you regarding the crap thats posted. I see it myself.
I do believe Holmes could pose similar problems as Ali. Not that I rate Holmes above him. Reach, jab, footwork, etc. Though I believe Dempsey beats both.
Johnson & Jeffries r the biggest obstacles. Johnson u can view. Jeffries via reputation as the best.
Studying Langford/Jeanette vid, Langford could be best of them all.
Mike Tyson talks about Dempsey alot and has great knowledge about the fighters of old . i just watched a documentary of Tyson and British commentator Harry Carpenter watching and discussing old boxing footage of the great fighters and Tyson rates Dempsey VERY highly .
No doubt Dempsey was great, but not the best of his time. He would not defend his title against Sam Langford, no matter how bad Langford wanted to fight him. At this time Dempsey was 23, in his prime, langford was 34 and blind in one eye. Dempsey-“The hell I feared no man. There was one man I wouldn’t fight because I knew he would flatten me. I was afraid of Sam Langford." Because hes black and Canadian he just never got a shot at the title, and because Jack was scared of him.
@thehitchrules you asked tyson against dempsey???...that clearly should not be a comparison or even be a though of a match up....Tyson would beat that guy down so bad that dempesy would question himself if he is even a professional boxer...hes trash i dnt kno wut ppl see in that guy!!?
@mttpaul85 - You need to go join the circus where the other clowns reside. The tin man would be looking for that soft spot on the canvas as early as the one minute mark of the first round. Tyson would have trouble beating Willard, Dempsey might kill him!
@thehitchrules you are fucking kidding right ? what r u punch drunk ? what part of i would not bet Dempsey vs the following guys don't you understand. LOL
@1saxonwolf well we could go in circles for days about who would win....personally I don't think he'de have much of a chance vs Ali Or Holmes as Dempsey had major trouble with good boxers....Pretty much what happened when he lost twice to a very good boxer Tunney.....Tyson although know as a slugger also had some pretty decent boxing skills
@renduke Yeah, we could go at for awhile, lol. Thats what makes it fun. Tunney was better than Ali or Holmes. Plus Dempsey was done by that time. Take Dempsey 1918-1923 he beats Tunney. Watch the whole Gibbons fight, he out boxes an ATG at his own game after 2 years off. Beat a very good boxer in Sharkey on the down slide while Sharkey was in his prime. Ali or Holmes would get beat, they would just last longer because of styles. Tyson would get slaughtered.
@1saxonwolf wow we have to beg to differ...Dempsey had 3 figths past the age of 30 and lost 2 of them...He also never faced a Black Figther....IF we look at Larry Holmes up to and INCLUDING His lose to Mike Tyson at age 39 he was 18 - 3 past age 30 with his 3 loses coming AFTER age 35...I will say i think Tunney (who had 1 loss in 80 something fights) is the most underated champ ever
@renduke Whats the point of discussing past prime fights ? Prime vs prime is the question. Dempsey never fought a "black" fighter? Where do you get that? And what does it matter if its true, which its not. U think "black" = better ? I can tell u it doesn't matter. Dempsey would get Holmes out of there. Holmes 82 in reach & footwork could help him last a bit. Once JD tags him on the chin=KO.
@1saxonwolf its not that black is better.....it's the fact that when you exclude Any group...black, white, latin or whatever you are facing a limited talent pool....you are not facing all "comers"...AND its not even Dempseys fault it was his manager who refuse to let him get in the ring with black figthers.....wow sharkey a good boxer ? LOL he's widely regaurded as a 3rd tire champ with something teen loses on his record.
@renduke Dempsey didn't fight black fighters is incorrect. Didn't defend his title against a black fighter is correct. Lets make sure the truth is stated. Dempsey never lost to a black fighter. JL Johnson was a ND, every other was a win. He had in training camp the top black HW's as sparring partners.
Prime Sharkey was hardly 3rd tier. A very good boxer was his acclaim, though inconsistent. Watch for yourself, plenty of film of him.
@1saxonwolf - "Prime vs Prime is the question" ... that my friend is theOnly question. I was on a forum where they were discussing whether a 38 y.o. Louis would beat a 36 y.o. Ali. Whether a Rocky with LONGER arms would beat Holyfield. I shit you not, you cant make up shit like this. I was waiting to see someone post whether a DEAD Marciano would beat Ali with parkinsons. The oldtimers get 0 respect from these video watchers who think they're experts. One guy told me Qwai k.o.s Dempsey easy.
@1899sharkey I agree the people under 45 give the old timers No Respect...and many of them have never seen them not even on youtube....I see crap like Ali, Louis, Marciano and Foreman would all have no chance vs Tyson
as for you're example...I'de take Ali over Louis 8 days a week...Marciano would have beat a prime Louis anyway....Holifield, Marciano would have been a great and contetnious fight could have gone either way.
@1899sharkey Teddy Hayes was asked what he thought of a fight between Dempsey & Ali sometime in the 70's. He said it would be a close fight,,,,,,, now that Dempsey walks with a cane. LMAO !!!!!!!! He said he was never too impressed with Clay/Ali.
@1saxonwolf - Yeah, same with Ty Cobb, a scribe asked him in '60 what he would hit "Today". Cobb replied " about .300... but i'm 65 years old. Holmes was great but his only defence was holding his gloves high and blocking punches, not good against Jack. I agree about Sam, he was one heck of a fighter. In a fight between two atg's i just believe body punching and power would generally have their say.Ali had no body attack and only fair power. Still one of the best.
fuck ray robinson? moron.. this guy jack dempsey is great but he dont hype this man skills up. I came to watch this because of BOARDWALK EMPIRE lol...
He's outstanding, only just started doing box myself so it's good to watch an old master @ work ! Does anyone know the name of the song playing on the vid, I've searched this page for 'music' but can't find anything?
@tinoman2 Well you're entitled to your own opinion and so am I but no way Dempsey is any better than Sugar Ray Robinson although I'd still rank Dempsey close to the top 10 rank because of his flashy style and aggressive style he has that could trouble almost any great Heavyweights with the exception of George Foreman and maybe Sonny Liston due to styles.
@N1Zer0 - Thats probably a 90 lb. bag. Dempsey was 6'1 and 188-192 in his prime. He was called Jack the giant killer for the way he k.o.d much larger men. He would go thru the K bros. like a hot knife thru butter.
@sherrod3879 your a fucking idiot. Mike tyson learnt from watching true greats like joe louis, jack dempsey and rocky marciano, skin colour doesn't enter the equation, its the type of upbringing you had. Hell, jack dempsey use to walk into saloon as a kid and challenge the toughest guy in there to make a little bit of money.
dammmnn, dempsey knew how to ground himself... look at his legs: wide... and he squats low! with every punch you can see him pull the power out of the ground and add to it by moving his his hips, no wonder hes a legend!
For all you evolutionists, take a look at the Klits/ Adamek fight, then go back 95 years and look at the Willard/ Moran fight.Vitaly is Willard reincarnated without Willards great stamina. Dempsey would k.o. the Klit bros. both in the same nite. W. would last about one minute and his bro wouldn't make it out of the second round. Understanding of the human body?lmao
Wether he would stand up to today's athletes is a silly question, nutrition science supplementation and understanding of the human body and its limitations is miles ahead of what it was in his time. He is credited as an amazing fighter and knock out artist because he developed a technique that incorporated defence and devastating offence. If Dempsey was fighting today he would be an athelete of today's standards. He would not go down so easily.
@sosdkny Dempsey beat an 37 yr old to win the title then guess how many title defenses he had in 8 yrs? 5. Now see who he fought. Bunch of nobodies and he didnt fight black fighters.OVERRATED
Klitschko is a standing target. What does weight have to do with anything. So dempsey would have bulked if he had to and Dempsey's punching power is far superior than Klitshcko's. And if you are talking about Vladimir, his chin is made of glass.
@HipHop226 You think guys Klits size weren't around in 1900's ? Foolish ! Dempsey fought many men this size & demolished them. 6' 4", 6'5", 6'6", 220 - 260 ilb contenders BLACK & white. The top contenders in 1918-1919 were big men, Morris, Fulton, champion Willard. Chief training partners 6'6"Tate, 260 lb Godfrey were leading black HW contenders, JD was breaking ribs & knocking them out in camps. He was the most feared fighter of his time. Still holds record for most 1st rnd KO's. Tysons idol.
wow. MMA thai kick judo bjj...all weak styles for weak people.u say a boxer can beat a normal person ?why?a soccer player don't go around kick people in da ass.
u want become good to fight in some pub or in da road?so fight keep your puches, learn what u need for win and do it alone. with the good mind u can do evrything.from boxing to fish, hunt or idk poker.train your body in evry muscle not in a specialization.forget the method, forget yourself.u are not fighting,u are the fight.STAND UP KID!!!
@LeoJohnGalt DEMPSEY eats killer power punches for breakfast, he's got to good of a chin and too much power for a welter weight its rediculous this is even a discussion. its like when boxing newbs say who would win tyson or pacquiao hahaha thats why we have weight divisions!
If it wasn't going to be Dempsey losing, it would be great to see Dempsey in his prime vs. Wanderlei in his prime. (Dempsey is going to lack the tool set for a kick boxing/pride match, and Wanderlei would get his head punched in if they did queensbury boxing)
@Makron5 - Guess what? Baseball players are better at baseball than boxers are. However, as long as mma rules allow one to be struck in the face, any world class boxer would literally kill these glorified wrestlers(they look like they're trying to butt fuck each other). You cant sign up a couple hundred wrestlers, call them mma or ufc or whatever u call em, and then start comparing them to legendary boxers.Mma is wannabe boxers who cant stand and fight to save their ass.
@1899sharkey there have been a few top boxers that have said the exact same thing, gone into and MMA fight and got their asses kicked. You don't know what you're talking about.
As some people have said, MMA and boxing are two different sports. You shouldn't really compare them.
@AdamThomas91 - Wrong novice... A 40 year old James Toney is not a top boxer. Like i said, wannabe boxers...wannabe fans. Go play with your video games.Dont bother replying, i've heard all the garbage.
@1899sharkey I trained in boxing for 10 years, then I started to train in MMA a couple of years ago thinking that because I'm better than any of them with my hands I'd wipe the floor with them. All that happened was I'd get my legs kicked from underneath me or get taken down and beaten on the floor. Boxers can only do what they do because they don't have to worry about being kicked, clinched or taken down. It's a different game, like I said, there's no point comparing them.
@AdamThomas91 - lmao..yeah, you sure have been around. Well i guess because you're an mma man, i'll have to change my mind.Go get one of your butt buddies and go at it! Get your mma ass over on their vids, where you can tell each other how tough you are.
@1899sharkey I'm not just an MMA man, I love boxing too. I just don't think you should compare them because they're two different sports. You'd know that if you actually tried them both. I just think it's stupid to make these comments when you obviously don't know what you're talking about.
@1899sharkey and a Muay Thai kickboxer would probably fair better in a fight since they have more tools. A boxer can beat a normal person no problem, but it's a restricted form of fighting to a more 'gentlemen' style. Boxers without training have almost no idea how to defend against a guy who suddenly whips out a kick or grabs on them. MMA is also more of a sport for wrestlers. You had nowhere to go until MMA if you wrestled or practiced a grappling art. Boxers can make more mint in boxing.
@crackdempsey - There is a movie about Jack. It starred Treat Williams as Dempsey with Sam Waterston(LAW AND ORDER) as Jack Kearns. I think it was made in the late 80's. Not the best flick ever but interesting if you're a Dempsey fan.
My great grandfather used to hold chicken fights in southern North Carolina. Jack Dempsey loved to come to them. My grandmother had a picture of my mother when she was barely a year old. Jack signed the back of the picture and my mom still has it to this day.
A young pro boxer? So what? There's about 19 thousand Pro boxers and 45 thousand amateurs, and 99% of them will never make Top 10 in their weight class. Good luck to you though, maybe you'll beat the odds though your reluctance to learn may impede you as will your over-emotional outbursts instead of discipline.
RE: you insisting The Man was 5'7", hoping, almost praying for it? I think you're most likely about that height with a Napoleon complex.
@jmoneyp4p People who think a good 240 pounder would beat a great 170--90 pounder just dont understand the fight game.Big guys dont make great fighters..."
@bradlee180 nah i have his book that he wrote, it states what he weighed at the time and how tall he was how long his arms are ext its called (Championship Fighting: Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense)
@bradlee180 ive read the book he said hes 5'7 170, if hes nearly 6'1 why did he look so small when he and jess willard went toe to toe, willard was on stilts? cunt.
Because Big Jess Willard is one of the largest Champs in history, 6' 6¼" and 245 lbs. Same size as Wladimir Klitschko. Willard had half a foot on Jack.
And the 6' ¾", 190 lb Jack would have carved up Wladimir and Vitali just as easily as he did Willard.
Here's a clue: Google boxrec Dempsey (or any other boxer for that matter.)
It'll be a great resource for a young fella such as yourself.
@bradlee180 a young fella who is pro, while you sit here on youtube giving out an opinion when you dont even fight, boxrec had lenox lewis down as the best p4p for about 2 months, while its a good source dont belive everything, get off youtube and go for a run old man.
@MrLukedanger Well the first tall guy you see him fighting against is Big Bill Tate, 6'7 260, Jess Willard was near 6'7 255, so yeah, they were on stilts, their huge friggin legs. I guess you probbaly thought Willard and Tate were about 6'3 or something... Look at the Gene Tunney fight, Tunney was 6'0. That should give you some reference. 170? He was 183 at his smallest, in the beginning..from poverty and mining coal.
Most of the guys he decked appear to be larger than him. Dempsey must of had to really know how to fight. I've personally seen smaller, wiry, but tough-as-nails guys beat the crap out of bigger guys.
Dempsey wasn't small. His measurements point this out as was just noted. He was ripped. Dempsey believed that being heavy was a disadvantage. He always trained down to fighting weight. Ex; Between Willard fight & first defense against Miske he weighed > 220 lbs. Worked off 30 lbs for fight. He's on record for being 200 lbs for fights. His measurements are of a 220lb man. Speed kills, & he knew it. Look at the work rate in the 15 rnd Gibbons fight. 6' 1", 190 lbs of dynamite ! Greatest HW ever !!
@spidermoo1 He was small but his biceps measured over 16 inches and his chest extended was 43 inches. In comparison, Ali's biceps were 15 inches and his chest natural were 44 inches. Mind you Ali is two inches taller than Dempsey and 30 pounds lighter but has smaller biceps that Dempsey and nearly identical chest measurements! Dempsey was an incredible physical specimen.
Ali also had trouble with the best left hookers, which Dempsey certainly was. Muhammad tended to lean away from them. With most, that worked when MA was in his prime. But not when Henry Cooper decked him, nor when Frazier did the same.
Here again, we can see from these films how Dempsey packed EVERYTHING he had into every punch, using his hips -- that's how he knocked out much-bigger men like Willard.
OK, will go out on a limb here:). I believe Ali was the greatest heavyweight champ of all time. But he had trouble with swarmers in their respective primes, like Frazier. I think Dempsey at his best would have given Ali at his a hell of a fight:) --
@1899sharkey I must say, though, that I would have loved to see Dempsey vs. Marciano in their respective primes -- also the same re. Jack and Joe Frazier:) --

@fistking It's because u don't know what your watching. Honest.
1saxonwolf 1 month ago
@fistking yeah dude youre entitled to your opinion but honestly the speed and power that this little guy brought against bigger opponents is truly staggering.
This was a man who pretty much pioneered head movement, which he did not because some one taught him or because he sparred at some boxing gym, but because he handed guys their ass regularly in every bar and fight he walked into. Talk about the old school of hard knocks try learning boxing yourself by brawling.

@B04Jordan Did you know that Jack Johnson ducked Sam Langford.....as for some of the crap these other guys say about Dempsey its laughable...Yes He Was A Great Figther even a Top 10 Champ but no where near the top 3....Dempsey would have won ever round vs Marciano until Rocky Ko'ed him....Dempsey would have had next to no chance vs Ali and Holmes....in fact i am pretty sure he wouldn't Handle Louis....and maybe maybe Not Tyson
renduke 2 months ago
@renduke Finally someone who respects Dempsey but is realistic about him:)
B04Jordan 2 months ago
@B04Jordan The Greatest Champs ever in order...Ali....Marciano...Louis...the 2 most underated ever Holmes and Tunney....fights are about styles Marciano would have beat Louis even when Louis was Prime....if Dempsey couldn't handle the excellent boxing skills of Tunney he wouldn't have a prayer vs Ali....Marciano would wear Dempsey down and when the late rounds came he'de beat him like a drum

@renduke Do you know who Ray Arcel is ?
1saxonwolf 2 months ago
@1saxonwolf not only do i know who he is i met him once in 1988 i also had the pleasure of meeting Gil Clancey about 15 times.
Ray Arcel did tell me he thought Jack Dempsey was about the 4th best ever.
In fact i asked Arcel who he thought would win a Figth Between Louis and Tyson (you have to remember this was when Tyson was 21 Years Old) He Said and I quote "My Advice to Joe Would be don't show up"
It was Gil Clanceys Opinion that the best Ever were Louis, Marciano, Ali in that order.
renduke 1 month ago
@renduke You also have beachfront property to sell in phoenix ? Nah, Arcel said too many times to too many people in print & recorded video his thoughts on Dempsey. Best HW he ever saw. Louis second. He was quoted as saying Dempsey would "kill" Marciano in a round, Casey archives. Glancy never saw Dempsey fight. Most overrated boxer by neophytes, Ali.
1saxonwolf 1 month ago
@1saxonwolf you're such an idiot you never saw him figth either...Clancey was probably old enough to be your father....2. If I had to reach in my pocket I'de bet Ali VS Marciano.....3...Louis had an average chin Marciano AND Tyson would BOTH beat a prime Louis
renduke 1 month ago
@1saxonwolf Arcel put Jack Johnson AND Joe Louis Higher then Dempsey...he also thought Dempsey and Ali were about even...those are his views not mine....Sorry if it doesn't agree with your twisted idea of who is best
renduke 1 month ago
@renduke Aren't u about 50? Hoping to discuss without childish behavior. Glancy is respected. My point about him not seeing Dempsey fight is that he couldn't/wouldn't judge a fighter he never witnessed. Arcel/Dundee both would say I never saw him fight, I heard he was great regarding fighters before there respective times. Arcel said clearly Dempsey would beat any fighter after him. Period!.He rated Louis 2nd. I can cite my reference1 You can't! Your imaginary conversation,LMAO.

1saxonwolf 1 month ago
@1saxonwolf well clancey opinion has significance huh ? ok great because he didn;t have dempsey in his top 5 or 6....Clancey had 1 Louis, 2 Marciano, 3 Ali
Arcel had 1 Jack Johnson..2 Joe Louis, 3 Bacially a tie between Dempsey and Ali

1899sharkey 2 months ago
@1899sharkey I believe you regarding the crap thats posted. I see it myself.
I do believe Holmes could pose similar problems as Ali. Not that I rate Holmes above him. Reach, jab, footwork, etc. Though I believe Dempsey beats both.
Johnson & Jeffries r the biggest obstacles. Johnson u can view. Jeffries via reputation as the best.
Studying Langford/Jeanette vid, Langford could be best of them all.

I was afraid of Sam Langford." Because hes black and Canadian he just never got a shot at the title, and because Jack was scared of him.

mttpaul85 1 month ago
@mttpaul85 - You need to go join the circus where the other clowns reside. The tin man would be looking for that soft spot on the canvas as early as the one minute mark of the first round. Tyson would have trouble beating Willard, Dempsey might kill him!
1899sharkey 1 month ago
@thehitchrules I would not bet Dempsey vs about 6 or 7 figthers i will name
Ali, Foreman, Tyson, Marciano, Louis and Maybe Maybe Larry Holmes and Joe Frazier...I'de also think twice about Vs Jack Johnson
renduke 2 months ago
@renduke What does that mean ?? !! That you think Dempsey could beat Ali, Foreman etc or not . ? Your post isn't clear at all .
thehitchrules 2 months ago
@thehitchrules you are fucking kidding right ? what r u punch drunk ? what part of i would not bet Dempsey vs the following guys don't you understand. LOL
renduke 2 months ago
@renduke I'd take that bet against them all. Ali & Holmes last longer because of styles. Jack Johnson has the best bet to win. The rest get Ko'd.
1saxonwolf 2 months ago
@1saxonwolf well we could go in circles for days about who would win....personally I don't think he'de have much of a chance vs Ali Or Holmes as Dempsey had major trouble with good boxers....Pretty much what happened when he lost twice to a very good boxer Tunney.....Tyson although know as a slugger also had some pretty decent boxing skills
renduke 2 months ago
@renduke Yeah, we could go at for awhile, lol. Thats what makes it fun. Tunney was better than Ali or Holmes. Plus Dempsey was done by that time. Take Dempsey 1918-1923 he beats Tunney. Watch the whole Gibbons fight, he out boxes an ATG at his own game after 2 years off. Beat a very good boxer in Sharkey on the down slide while Sharkey was in his prime. Ali or Holmes would get beat, they would just last longer because of styles. Tyson would get slaughtered.
1saxonwolf 2 months ago
@1saxonwolf wow we have to beg to differ...Dempsey had 3 figths past the age of 30 and lost 2 of them...He also never faced a Black Figther....IF we look at Larry Holmes up to and INCLUDING His lose to Mike Tyson at age 39 he was 18 - 3 past age 30 with his 3 loses coming AFTER age 35...I will say i think Tunney (who had 1 loss in 80 something fights) is the most underated champ ever
renduke 2 months ago
@renduke Whats the point of discussing past prime fights ? Prime vs prime is the question. Dempsey never fought a "black" fighter? Where do you get that? And what does it matter if its true, which its not. U think "black" = better ? I can tell u it doesn't matter. Dempsey would get Holmes out of there. Holmes 82 in reach & footwork could help him last a bit. Once JD tags him on the chin=KO.
Agreed about Tunney. Great boxer, technician.
1saxonwolf 2 months ago

Louis beats Ali & Marciano.
1saxonwolf 2 months ago
@1saxonwolf - "Prime vs Prime is the question" ... that my friend is theOnly question. I was on a forum where they were discussing whether a 38 y.o. Louis would beat a 36 y.o. Ali. Whether a Rocky with LONGER arms would beat Holyfield. I shit you not, you cant make up shit like this. I was waiting to see someone post whether a DEAD Marciano would beat Ali with parkinsons. The oldtimers get 0 respect from these video watchers who think they're experts. One guy told me Qwai k.o.s Dempsey easy.
1899sharkey 2 months ago
@1899sharkey I agree the people under 45 give the old timers No Respect...and many of them have never seen them not even on youtube....I see crap like Ali, Louis, Marciano and Foreman would all have no chance vs Tyson
as for you're example...I'de take Ali over Louis 8 days a week...Marciano would have beat a prime Louis anyway....Holifield, Marciano would have been a great and contetnious fight could have gone either way.
renduke 2 months ago
@1899sharkey Teddy Hayes was asked what he thought of a fight between Dempsey & Ali sometime in the 70's. He said it would be a close fight,,,,,,, now that Dempsey walks with a cane. LMAO !!!!!!!! He said he was never too impressed with Clay/Ali.
1saxonwolf 2 months ago
@1saxonwolf - Yeah, same with Ty Cobb, a scribe asked him in '60 what he would hit "Today". Cobb replied " about .300... but i'm 65 years old. Holmes was great but his only defence was holding his gloves high and blocking punches, not good against Jack. I agree about Sam, he was one heck of a fighter. In a fight between two atg's i just believe body punching and power would generally have their say.Ali had no body attack and only fair power. Still one of the best.

1899sharkey 4 months ago
Wether he would stand up to today's athletes is a silly question, nutrition science supplementation and understanding of the human body and its limitations is miles ahead of what it was in his time. He is credited as an amazing fighter and knock out artist because he developed a technique that incorporated defence and devastating offence. If Dempsey was fighting today he would be an athelete of today's standards. He would not go down so easily.

Jess Willard beat Jack Johnson to win the heavyweight title, so what is your point?
Why bring race into this? Jack Johnson would waste any heavyweight right now also, black or white.
Since Lennox Lewis, every single heavyweight to hold a belt has been non-black. Race means nothing in boxing!!

@sosdkny Dempsey weighted 187pds. You believe that he'd beat Klitschko 235pds 6'6
HipHop226 4 months ago
@HipHop226
Klitschko is a standing target. What does weight have to do with anything. So dempsey would have bulked if he had to and Dempsey's punching power is far superior than Klitshcko's. And if you are talking about Vladimir, his chin is made of glass.
sosdkny 4 months ago

@Makron5 which is why we never compare fighters from both sports. Cos remember
MMA fighter - jack of all trades, master of non
Boxer - master of his trade
TooBloodyEasy 6 months ago
@Makron5 - Guess what? Baseball players are better at baseball than boxers are. However, as long as mma rules allow one to be struck in the face, any world class boxer would literally kill these glorified wrestlers(they look like they're trying to butt fuck each other). You cant sign up a couple hundred wrestlers, call them mma or ufc or whatever u call em, and then start comparing them to legendary boxers.Mma is wannabe boxers who cant stand and fight to save their ass.
1899sharkey 6 months ago
@1899sharkey there have been a few top boxers that have said the exact same thing, gone into and MMA fight and got their asses kicked. You don't know what you're talking about.
As some people have said, MMA and boxing are two different sports. You shouldn't really compare them.
AdamThomas91 6 months ago
@AdamThomas91 - Wrong novice... A 40 year old James Toney is not a top boxer. Like i said, wannabe boxers...wannabe fans. Go play with your video games.Dont bother replying, i've heard all the garbage.
1899sharkey 6 months ago
@1899sharkey I trained in boxing for 10 years, then I started to train in MMA a couple of years ago thinking that because I'm better than any of them with my hands I'd wipe the floor with them. All that happened was I'd get my legs kicked from underneath me or get taken down and beaten on the floor. Boxers can only do what they do because they don't have to worry about being kicked, clinched or taken down. It's a different game, like I said, there's no point comparing them.
AdamThomas91 6 months ago
@AdamThomas91 - lmao..yeah, you sure have been around. Well i guess because you're an mma man, i'll have to change my mind.Go get one of your butt buddies and go at it! Get your mma ass over on their vids, where you can tell each other how tough you are.
1899sharkey 6 months ago
@1899sharkey I'm not just an MMA man, I love boxing too. I just don't think you should compare them because they're two different sports. You'd know that if you actually tried them both. I just think it's stupid to make these comments when you obviously don't know what you're talking about.
AdamThomas91 5 months ago
@AdamThomas91 - I dont compare them. 'Nuff said.
1899sharkey 5 months ago
@1899sharkey and a Muay Thai kickboxer would probably fair better in a fight since they have more tools. A boxer can beat a normal person no problem, but it's a restricted form of fighting to a more 'gentlemen' style. Boxers without training have almost no idea how to defend against a guy who suddenly whips out a kick or grabs on them. MMA is also more of a sport for wrestlers. You had nowhere to go until MMA if you wrestled or practiced a grappling art. Boxers can make more mint in boxing.

J Dempsey:
CLASS: Heavyweight
HEIGHT: 6'1"
WEIGHT: 187
REACH: 77 inches

@MrLukedanger Sure he was, when he was 15 years old. Where did you dig up those bogus stats.
Dempsey was almsot six feet and about 190 in his prime.

Jack Dempsey's Shovel Hook is Scary no matter what era your from!

@stevevandien - I agree. Dempseys style would be hell for Ali. I think Jack beats Ali and everyone else at his best. Dempsey had it all.

@1899sharkey I must say, though, that I would have loved to see Dempsey vs. Marciano in their respective primes -- also the same re. Jack and Joe Frazier:) --
