  • I like the guitarist's comping. I need to line how to comp on guitar. I'm a shredder trying to get into jazz. My chords are terrible.

  • very good job guys!!

  • the saxophone solo is improvisation? ... What I have heard from somewhere

  • @brunoraspanti2006 It is incredible, indeed

  • This is a good tune, but the guitar solo threw it off, really bad timing. The bass player had a really creative solo though! I like those Jaco-esque double stops.

  • Guitar player has horrible timing...

  • great performance :) probably my favourite monk tune. and done really well - thanks for sharing

  • he was sampling from weather report, that's why it sounds off. sort of an odd choice for bebop, but it works.

  • I play this in F ^^

  • Sweet job!

  • Nice version.

  • ouch got off at the end there for a sec. pretty good tho! It seems people always do this tune in Bb, which is nice because it's the original. But it's kinda cool to here someone doing it in a different key this time, makes it a different song almost. (F if I'm not mistaken?)

  • Great job on everybody's part. I wish the guitarist could use a 'thicker' tone. The sax player's got nice phrases and tone

  • To all you jazz experts: Post your own videos or shut up. Half of the critics on here are probably not even up to this level of playing.

Clean playing from all the players, although the bass player can definitely improve. Feels like he just started to learn bebop soloing.

  • You don't need to be able to play well to appreciate well-played music. This post-or-shut-up attitude is not what criticism is about, constructive or otherwise.

  • that bassist needs to learn how to solo through changes before he starts trying to do rythmic chordal shit

  • I disagree, I quite like his soloing. His chords sound on the mark to me. You have to remember though that what sounds good to one person may sound like crap to someone else. Alot of it is how you percieve it.

  • Also, you have to remember this IS a Monk tune.

  • I do find it hilarious how youtube somehow has the magical ability to transform the average joe into a supposed astounding critic...despite the fact that he/she may or may not know a damn thing about what they're criticising

  • Any particular comments you are discussing here? Some? All?

  • @hookahsmokinbassguy Seriously, it's a well put together performance, everyone shut up and listen. If you knew anything about music and performance you'd know that all things considered, this sounds phenomenal. I enjoyed this quite a lot.

  • I do have a criticism for the bassist, away from all I've heard thus far: Shift your accenting one quarter note behind where it currently is. That puts the major accent on the 2 of the measure with the minor accent on the 4. Play beats 1 & 3 at about the same level, though my taste gives least emphasis to the 1 of the measure. Play the same notes. Keep the J-bass, use a P-bass, upright, clavanova, whatever. Just play on the backbeat. Occasionally, switch major accent between 2 & 4 for dynamics.

  • the accent of the head is on the one.

by shifting to the 2 you're being provocative for no reason...it dectracts from the groove.

  • The accent for those playing the melody within the head is on the 1 & 3. I only refer to the bassist. Also, his accenting on the 1 & 3 is not just within the head. He is doing so thru the majority of the song.

If you disagree with me, fine, but try this for me, please. Go to some jazz performance, get right up front and clap on the 1 and the 3. Make a big show of it, and do it all night long, even. Later, come back and tell me how that went.

  • i agree that during the solo sessions the accent is on 2 and 4, as with pretty much all bebop.

i was just saying that within the head keeping the accent on 1 and 3 felt more natural to me.

  • dynamics? switching the beat from 1 and 3 to the 2 and 4 wont increase dynamics. do you know what dynamics are? its were the musics volume is increased or decreased.

  • Dymanics does include the increse or decrease of volume, but that is not all there is to dynamics, and I wan't implying that playing the backbeat will "increase" dymanics. but folks, it is the backbeat, and it does affect the dymanics of the song. If you wanna sit around a flip birds over a litle constructive criticism, I don't have time for it. Do it or don't. I suppose I don't really care all that much. I have my own gigs to deal with (a reasonabe discussion is fine with me, though).

  • haha agreed. not trying to offend, or anything.

and besides i think we're actually in agreement for the most part.

  • kinduv lack lustre, but nice player

  • haha is the bass player quoting birdland ~3:30? That's pretty awesome.

  • Very, very close to it ... he touches on it a little

  • the saxophone player plays an amazing phrase from :54 to :58.

  • Guys, it`s so cool that you wanna play jazz, not pop/rock/rap etc.

  • Nem is ment ki a basszus a hangnemmből. Valamelyik okoska azt írta...

  • I haven't listened to this in awhile and just came back to it. Guys, great work. Yes, some parts are shaky, but that's jazz. I love it.

  • he was only off for about a bar. leave the guy alone.

  • it wasnt that bad. as for the bass, i agree that upright is better for jazz, however in all fairness his bass aint bad. its not a precision, if you look at the pick guard and pick ups, its pretty clear that its a fender JAZZ bass

  • Upright is better for swing, not jazz in general. I love the sound of electric bass on a nice latin jazz song :D

Of course, I don't think I'd suggest a even a fender jazz bass for latin jazz. =P

Not that I know ANYTHING about basses, I'm a saxophone player.

  • i guess i am kind of biased being primarily and upright player. however i would agree on the electric for most latin.

  • What's that bass that Geddy Lee uses? My friend play that on a few latin pieces we do with our combo and he sounds great. Of course, he is just a great bassist overall, upright or otherwise.

  • oh shut the hell up.

your clearly not a professional musician. your just some ass wipe on youtube criticizing people trying to make yourself sound like a musician. your probably a viola player.

the guys solo was fine. your just to much of a stuck up douche bag to open your ears to someone else's preference of sound.

you'll never make it in the jazz world.

  • viola player? ouch

  • that was cool. I dont know where you learned music or what you listen but it was clearly fine

  • Yes, very reminiscent of Sonny Stitt, I agree. Who and where are these "cats"?

  • Guitarist-Practice improvising alone with a metranome, only using swingin' 8th notes. You have nice licks by your time needs some work. Also, don't grip the neck; you are, and that's why you're fumbling with the fast runs. Think of your left palm as a basket while you're playing; you want to form a claw around the outside of the neck. This will build a lot of muscle and make it easier to play fast. Other than that, this is pretty sweet. Great tenor work.

  • Be gentle on the guitarist! I thought he had some nice little themes going on the solo, the sound is tinny, but he can fix that pretty easily. They look like kids! Its nice to hear younger cats making the effort to play this stuff and pulling it off with some real talent, look forward to seeing more videos!

  • i think the band is great except the bass player, you can't say that it's jazz cuz you only play one same boring pattern

  • YOU cant tell people waht they can and cant say is jazz! Who made YOU the expert? Ever heard All Blues?

  • loll

  • Yes. I agree with nottyham. The guitarist has reasonable skills, but the tone is very poor. Far too much treble and not much bass sound, or sustain. It all contributes to a tinny guitar sound.

  • Now all you guys need are a Trumpet, Trombone player, an Organist, 2 guys dressed like "Hasidic Diamond Merchants" and a big venue, and you can be the blues brothesr, j/k. Good playing though seriously.

  • I hear echoes of Sonny Stitt here. Good drummer.

  • I like the sax solo. Very nice tone dude. My jazz band and I are currently working on this, and you have me some ideas for my tenor solo as well... So thanks!

And I totally agree with Nottyham. The guitar needs work, comping is weak. And, stand up bass would be moneyyyy.

  • Good sax player. Like his tone.

  • Great job. The guitarist needs to be less busy with the comping. The Bass player needs a stand up. Electric bass sounds like shit for this music.
