So Mattera interviewed all of the 300 plus members of Iraq Veterans Against the War at this event, (myself included) and found what? Three that were iffy? When invited to testify in for Congress, we jumped at the chance! If we were trying to blame the troops, we would do affidavits and reports to the Pentagon, but it is the architects in the administration who are responsible for the nature of the occupations. Those who clamor for reports to the Pentagon are those that want to blame the troops.
If these guys participated in war crimes, not only did they violate the UCMJ in several areas, they are self-admitted felons. The UCMJ specifically states the duty of a servicemember to refuse unlawful orders. Of course they won't sign anything, they are full of shit. If one actually did participate, then that person should turn themselves in to authorities and face the consequences along with the other accused parties. The military will police thier own.

Obviously we want sworn testimony to back up their claims.
However, I think it was wise not to sign a statement admitting to having committed war crimes in the hopes of bringing justice to those higher up in the military, and with the intent of overhauling the military system, without consulting a lawyer first.
I think the their expectation is that the likely outcome of signing an affidavit would be that they would be made scapegoats (e.g. Abu Ghraib) and nothing would happen to higher ups.

Not even 200 soldiers showed up for Winter soldiers two. Like these guys said they wouldn't sign an affidavit saying they committed war crimes. When we went into Iraq there were men shooting at us with Calvin Klein shirts on. The ROE was thrown out the window because we were fighting not only Iraqis but Egyptians, Sudanese, Chechen's, and every other extremist within the Middle East. They sure as hell didn't follow the Geneva convention.

The point of the video is whether these prior soldiers will sign an affidavit backing their testimony. If they were there is verifiable! If they saw or participated in the acts they report is based on their testimony here at present. If they sign a legal document then they are legally held for their actions. So what would the point of signing an affidavit be? Since affidavits are used for two reasons
-To allow evidence to be gathered from witnesses or participants who may not be available to testify in person before the court...
-To obtain a declaration on a legal document, such as an application...
I'm not sure what kind of application was supposed to be filled out for this and all participants seemed willing to participate in testimony. So what's the point? Unless this guy just being stupid?

the police know what they're getting into when they sign up for the job. there's a clear objective and a non-changing imperative for them to act as peace keepers in a particular community. on the other hand, someone who volunteered to serve in the military out of a patriotic sense of duty (and/or for financial reasons) in 2000 had no way of knowing that they would be FORCED to fight in Iraq in 2003 in a premeditated act of aggression by the US government. the situations are very different.

Obviously we want sworn testimony to back up their claims.
However, I think it was wise not to sign a statement admitting to having committed war crimes in the hopes of bringing justice to those higher up in the military, and with the intent of overhauling the military system, without consulting a lawyer first.
I think the their expectation is that the likely outcome of signing an affidavit would be that they would be made scapegoats (e.g. Abu Ghraib) and nothing would happen to higher ups.

If an accusation is made and it not made under an oath, swearing to tell the truth, what good is that accusation. These boys are making accusations against soldiers, if they are not lying, why are they so hesitant to swear to it's validity under oath? The only reason, I can think of, that a person would make a charge yet refuse to swear to it's honesty is because the person making the allegation is a liar. Maybe they are all looking forward to a career as a democrat in congress.

This sworn affidavits thing is ridiculous, trying to imply that the soldiers are lying. Are people so dense, they would be fooled by this. Any person with half a brain would not sign something like that. As soon as they sign, they will be hauled off to jail and the real people that should be prosecuted will never be talked about. Most of these guy just got out of military jail for refusing to go back and commit genocide. They know how the military works. This just more propaganda my our own gov.
